New Delhi:  Sources in the Congress party say Sonia Gandhi is expected to return to Delhi on August 30.

The UPA President has been in the US, where her party said she was recovering from surgery.  The Congress said it would not confirm the nature of her medical problem.  Different media reports said Mrs. Gandhi was at the Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, though this was not confirmed by Congress spokespersons.

Mrs. Gandhi's return, her party says, has not been hastened by the crisis that has engulfed the government over Anna Hazare's hunger strike. The 74-year-old Gandhian has not eaten for eight days; his sit-in protest at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan has provoked frenetic support all over the country.

Stung by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s slogans against United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress members on Tuesday forced repeated adjournments of Rajya Sabha disallowing Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley to complete his speech during a debate on the Commonwealth Games.

The Opposition and the Treasury benches clashed frequently during the Short Duration Discussion initiated by Mr. Jaitley, who attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for appointment of Suresh Kalmadi as chairman of CWG Organising Committee.

Mr. Jaitley also referred to Mr. Kalmadi’s objections to the government interference in his work.

The BJP leader mentioned Mr. Kalmadi’s letter to the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary in 2007 in which it was stated that his appointment as OC chief followed “a series of meetings” with the UPA chairperson and the Prime Minister.

When Mr. Jaitley made these remarks, his party colleagues resorted to slogan shouting, using certain words against Ms. Gandhi, which the Congress members strongly objected.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital where she underwent successful surgery on August 4 for an undisclosed medical condition, the party announced on Friday.

In a brief statement, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi – and a member of the four-member panel that is to oversee day-to-day matters in the party president's absence — said the surgeon had indicated that the operation was successful. He also said Ms. Gandhi's children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Wadra, and her son-in-law Robert Wadra, were with her. His statement concludes with: “This is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment. Her family requests that her privacy be respected.”

Indeed, the party continued to be circumspect on Ms. Gandhi's ailment, the name of the hospital where she was operated upon as well as the country that she is in. In the Congress, there were mixed views on the secrecy: one party member said, “In no other democracy would there be such secrecy about the medical condition of a political party's seniormost leader — party workers are worried and concerned: there should be medical bulletins to reassure them.”

And there was speculation on the significance of the names of the committee that Ms. Gandhi has constituted to take care of the party in her absence.

While the names of Mr. Rahul Gandhi and that of Ms. Gandhi's Political Secretary Ahmed Patel evoked no surprise, the other two names — Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Mr. Dwivedi — came in for some comment.

Andhra Pradesh Congress president Botsa Satyanarayana today favoured giving a temporary break to the ongoing agitations in Andhra Pradesh over the Telangana issue in view of the ill-health of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

"Yes, I agree with that. Sonia Gandhiji will have to take the decision. So, that will take time. Secondly, I have earlier said the issue can only be resolved through talks. Accordingly, Congress is holding talks with its leaders from various regions," he told reporters in the city.

He was asked about the suggestion made by former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah that a temporary break should be given to the agitations in AP over the Telangana issue as Sonia Gandhi is not well.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi was on Friday recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a US hospital where she underwent successful surgery for an undisclosed ailment.

The party on Friday issued a brief statement that Ms. Gandhi underwent a surgery on August 4 and the surgeon has indicated that the surgery has been successful.

At present, Ms. Gandhi is in ICU, a statement by Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said.

However, the statement did not disclose the details of the surgery and the hospital and the country where it was performed.

Ms. Gandhi is reportedly in the US for the surgery.

Her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with Ms. Gandhi, the party said.

Ms. Gandhi’s family has requested that her privacy be respected.

“This is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment. Her family requests that her privacy be respected,” Mr. Dwivedi said.

Rahul to take charge

Ms. Gandhi had decided that in her absence a group comprising Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders A K Antony, Ahmed Patel and Dwivedi will look after party affairs.

New Delhi:  Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been unwell, and has undergone surgery in the US, the Congress has said.

A Congress spokesman said the surgery has been successful. The party has not revealed what Mrs Gandhi's medical condition is or where in the US she is undergoing treatment.

New Delhi:  The Cabinet will be reshuffled tomorrow evening - sources at Rashtrapati Bhawan say the President and her team have been alerted to the swearing-in.  The actual reshuffle will be less dramatic than anticipated, suggest sources in the government.

This morning, Dr Manmohan Singh met with UPA President Sonia Gandhi at his home where they reportedly finalised his new list of ministers.

Sources say on the menu for tomorrow is the swearing-in of three cabinet ministers, four ministers of State with Independent Charge, and six Ministers of State.

Beni Prasad Verma, currently Minister of State for Steel, is expected to be elevated to Cabinet rank. And E Ahamed of the Indian Union Muslim League is likely to be made a Minister of State with Independent Charge. He is currently a minister of state for external affairs. 

 
Film actor Raj Babbar, who did the Congress proud by winning the high-profile Firozabad seat in a 2009 by-election defeating Dimple Yadav, the wife of Akhilesh Yadav and daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav, is likely to become a minister. This is Babbar's first Lok Sabha term as a Congressman. He was earlier a member of Mulayam's Samajwadi Party.

New Delhi:  Anna Hazare, the face of the India Against Corruption campaign initiated by a group of activists, met Congress President Sonia Gandhi this evening, a day before an all-party meet called by the government to discuss the conflicting versions of the Lokpal Bill, one prepared by five ministers and the other by five activists led by Mr Hazare.

Addressing the media after the brief 20 meeting, Mr Hazare said the talks were productive and that he discussed 15 issues concerning the Lokpal draft with the Congress President. He also told Mrs Gandhi that the correct draft of the Lokpal bill should be introduced in Parliament, otherwise he will go on fast from August 15.

In the course of his campaign for the Lokpal Bill, Anna Hazare wrote several letters to Sonia Gandhi. In these letters, he reacted sharply to Congress leaders accusing him of having links with the RSS and the BJP. He wrote to Sonia Gandhi that he was hurt by Congress leaders' "smear campaign" and that it was a conspiracy to defame him. In another letter, he also urged Sonia Gandhi to discuss the Lokpal draft in the National Advisory Council.

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Saturday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and demanded that quick and effective action be taken to save river Ganga and prevent parties from playing politics over the issue.

Bharti, who recently rejoined the BJP, was all praise for Gandhi, saying if the government makes any contribution to save Ganga, the credit for it would go to the UPA chairperson.

"Four months ago, I was disturbed to see the state of Ganga river. I had then written a letter to the Prime Minister and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. My demand is that Ganga should be declared a national river," Bharti told 

reporters after her meeting with Gandhi.

No need of any special declaration on Ganga as a National River; its enough respect it or even better respect our own health and that of future generations!

Contaminating Ganga has been the shameless & irresponsible practice of Municipalities, Panchayats, Industries, Humans and all, all along the Ganga, without care or concern that the contaminated waters enter into our body systems - as plain drinking water as well as through food - both as farm products and animal products!

On April 19, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi wrote to anti-corruption icon Anna Hazare, saying: “As for statements appearing in the media, let me assure you that I do not support nor encourage the politics of smear campaigns.” Anna had reacted to a smear campaign and written to Sonia, “Corrupt forces in the country appear to have united to derail the process of drafting an anti-corruption law through the joint committee.” A month later, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote to yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who had promised to go on fast to bring black money back to India, “We welcome your constructive suggestions to improve governance. We are eager to work with you and members of civil society towards building a just and prosperous India. The Finance Minister and his officers will continue to have discussions with you on the issues you raised.” After negotiations between  the Government’s team of troubleshooters— Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal and Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, led by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee—and Ramdev failed, the baba was whisked away in a midnight operation.

In the Lokpal cause, the Prime Minister’s negotiator was Sibal. After talks, Sibal announced, “We have agreed on almost all issues but there is no agreement on two issues—demand for an official notification to form the committee and making Hazare the chairman of the committee.” After evicting Baba Ramdev from Delhi, the Government declared war on June 7 against Team Anna, saying it would draft the Lokpal Bill “even in their absence” while also inviting them for the next meeting of the joint committee on June 15. This came after the Congress called both Hazare and Ramdev “mukhautas (masks)” of the BJP, asserting that there was “no bigger sanyasi” in contemporary politics than Manmohan.

For the first time since the 2G spectrum scandal took the centrestage of politics in New Delhi [ Images ], Congress president Sonia Gandhi has spoken on an issue linked to it.

The party's general secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu, Ghulam Nabi Azad [ Images], after meeting former chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam [ Images ] chief M Karunanidhi [ Images ], said on Tuesday: "Our leader Sonia Gandhi is concerned because Kanimozhi being a woman is in jail and it is a matter of concern, and the fact is that one cannot do anything."

Kanimozhi's arrest and her subsequent stay in jail are turning out to be an obsession for the media due to the DMK's public demonstration of emotions of all kinds – as if a chapter from the Mahabharat is unfolding inside and outside Tihar jail – and Kanimozhi's vulnerability is showcased in every manner possible.

Kadapa conqueror, Jagan throws challenge to Rahul and Sonia!

After projecting the Kadapa bypoll as a battle between him and Sonia Gandhi, a victorious Jagan Mohan Reddy challenged the grand old party to call for a snap poll in the state on Saturday. Having realized that targetting Sonia and Rahul would fetch him richer political dividends than attacking Congress minions in the state the YSR scion challenged the grand old party to call for a snap poll in the state and contest with photos of Sonia and Rahul.

"This is my challenge. If you (Congress) are so confident, call for an election and seek votes in the name of Sonia and Rahul. I will approach the voters carrying photograph of my father (Y S Rajasekhar Reddy). Let us see who will get public mandate," he declared at Kadapa.

He still have to learn some humility, while the state Congress has been, really, in trouble with weak leadership, Separate Telengana Agitation, low finances and the latest drubbing in the Kadapa by-elections.
