Young women are increasingly seeking cosmetic genital surgery to make their vaginas match pornographic images, a new study has found.

Researchers at the Elizabeth Garret Anderson Hospital, London, found that the number of labial reduction procedures in the National Health Service has increased five fold in the past 10 years.

This is the first study looking specifically at the labial dimensions of women seeking cosmetic surgery.

The researchers looked at 33 women seeking the operation, whose average age was 23, and found that they all had normal-sized labia minora, with an average width of 26.9 mm (right), and 24.8 mm (left).

Only three had a significant assymetry for which surgery would be appropriate. But 40 per cent of them still keen to pursue the operation, mostly because they wanted to make their labia smaller ‘to improve appearance’.

Other reasons included reducing discomfort, improving confidence and wanting to improve sexual intercourse.

According to the Independent, women are “bombarded with images suggesting they were not normal”, including websites advertising female genital cosmetic surgery which presented idealised images of the perfect vagina.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi was on Friday recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a US hospital where she underwent successful surgery for an undisclosed ailment.

The party on Friday issued a brief statement that Ms. Gandhi underwent a surgery on August 4 and the surgeon has indicated that the surgery has been successful.

At present, Ms. Gandhi is in ICU, a statement by Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said.

However, the statement did not disclose the details of the surgery and the hospital and the country where it was performed.

Ms. Gandhi is reportedly in the US for the surgery.

Her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with Ms. Gandhi, the party said.

Ms. Gandhi’s family has requested that her privacy be respected.

“This is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment. Her family requests that her privacy be respected,” Mr. Dwivedi said.

Rahul to take charge

Ms. Gandhi had decided that in her absence a group comprising Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders A K Antony, Ahmed Patel and Dwivedi will look after party affairs.

New Delhi:  Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been unwell, and has undergone surgery in the US, the Congress has said.

A Congress spokesman said the surgery has been successful. The party has not revealed what Mrs Gandhi's medical condition is or where in the US she is undergoing treatment.

Procedure beamed live from Hyderabad to Chennai

In a pioneering effort, eye surgeons from Maxivision here on Saturday successfully conducted an eye surgery without using the human hand.

Conventional surgeries need 40 per cent involvement of hands to make primary and secondary incisions and to cut open the lens capsule of the eye so that the cataract is removed using modern methods such as phaco surgery.

Surgeons, led by Maxivision CMD Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy, used Femtosecond Laser, branded as Customlens, to conduct the surgery.

After the surgery, the laser could be used to conduct a refractive surgery to reduce the dependency on glasses and contact lenses. Customlens is developed by German company Technolas.

“The significant part of this new method is that surgeons now can make precise incisions, which is usually not possible with hands. This ensures better vision quality and excellent results. Apart from removing cataract, we are also using this laser to conduct refractive surgeries so that patients need not use spectacles,” Dr. Reddy told The Hindu.

The surgery was beamed live to eye surgeons, who were in a surgery convention in Chennai organised by Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society on Saturday.

This is the first time in the country such a novel surgery was taken up by using Customlens, the surgeons said.

Apart from being one of the most preferred surgical destinations in the World (due to economic reasons), India too has been pioneering in surgical innovations and advanced surgical procedures!

Nearly everyone knows that cataracts are the effect of the normal process of aging. However, it is an equally important fact that cataracts occur early in the Indian population. And, yes, early onset can be prevented or delayed.

P.Kanthamani of Krishna Eye and ENT Hospital, explains that a cataract occurs when the transparent lens (similar to the lens of a camera which enables vision) becomes opaque. The most common cataract is senile cataract – that occurs with age, but it is now occurring at an earlier age, she says. By blocking the source of light that enters the eye, it will cause cloudy or foggy vision and glare.

Once cataract sets in, the prevailing medical prudence is to operate immediately and not wait for it to ripen, especially when it occurs earlier in patients, she explains. The surgery, which lasts for ten minutes, is not performed on both eyes at the same time, Dr. Kanthamani says.

Scientists have developed a new device which they claim can improve the success rate for surgery on a knee injury.

The rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee are common in sportspersons. Until now, it has been treated with screws that bind the damaged ligament to the bone but this method often fails as the screw slips out of place.
