Delhi:  A group of protesters outside Rahul Gandhi's home this evening were put into buses by the police. Not before a little taste of Rahul Gandhi-giri.

His staff sent cold drinks and samosas to the demonstrators. Which were accepted.

The protesters -many of them appeared to be college students - were responding to a request made by Anna Hazare's aides.  They have asked people who support 74-year-old Anna's anti-corruption movement to make their voices heard at the homes of MPs and ministers.  The idea is to prove that Anna's Jan Lokpal Bill has popular support.  The Bill is what has provoked Anna's fast, now in its 11th day.  He says he will not eat till parliament approves the Jan Lokpal Bill, which creates a new agency to tackle corruption among public servants.

Yesterday, in the afternoon, four metro stations near the Prime minister's home were closed to prevent people from protesting there. 300 people, however, managed to demonstrate there till they were taken away by the police.

Teen shot in Chile anti-Pinera protest dies: police!

(Reuters) - A Chilean teenager died early on Friday after being shot in the chest during massive protests in the capital Santiago against President Sebastian Pinera a day earlier, police said.

Local media said the 14-year-old boy was shot near a police barricade. Protesters battled police in the capital on Thursday, the second day of a two-day strike against unpopular Pinera that was marked by sporadic looting.

Led by students demanding free education, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in recent months to call for greater distribution of the income of a copper price boom in the world's top producer of the metal.

New Delhi: Even as 74-year-old Anna Hazare is leading a peaceful protest fast against corruption, hooliganism in the name of the agitation seems to be rearing its ugly head. While several people have been caught breaking traffic rules, a senior journalist with CNN-IBN was attacked by a group of youngsters claiming to be Hazare supporters.

CNN-IBN Senior Editor DP Satish was beaten up by a group of youngsters claiming to be Hazare supporters on Monday night.

"Youngsters on five bikes were riding shouting Anna slogans, they overtook our car. An altercation took place between the driver and them. They broke open the door and attacked me," said Satish.

Scores of people were on Sunday detained when they were protesting near the Prime Minister’s official residence in New Delhi demanding that a strong Lokpal Bill be passed in Parliament.

About 80 people were taken into custody near 7, Race Course Road residence of the Prime Minister on Sunday afternoon, sources said.

They were protesting against the government’s Lokpal Bill and demanded that the Jan Lokpal Bill formulated by Team Anna be tabled in Parliament.

Lawyers boycotted courts and students skipped classes in many towns across Orissa on Wednesday to support activist Anna Hazare's fight against corruption.

Work at various courts across the state, including the Orissa High Court at Cuttack, 26 km from here, was paralysed as lawyers marched wearing black badges and covering part of their faces with black ribbons.

"Anna's arrest was undemocratic," Lalatendu Samontray, secretary of the Orissa High Court Bar Association, the state's apex association of lawyers, told reporters.

The protest against the central government for arresting Hazare intensified here with people from all walks of life carrying out a number of marches separately.

Demonstrations, rallies and hunger strikes were also reported from other parts of the state. The protesters included freedom fighters, former judges, social activists, journalists and students.

CAIRO, Egypt -- Hundreds of Egyptian riot police, dressed in the black uniforms of state security and carrying batons and tear gas guns, cleared Tahrir Square of protesters on Monday. The demonstrators had occupied the square since January 25 in an ongoing, but increasingly fringe, movement against the government.

Onlookers cheered the riot police in shows of appreciation. Though protesters had massed in the millions in early February, since President Hosni Mubarak has left office and Egypt's economy has slowed, many regular Egyptians have dropped their support for the protest movement and urged daily life to return to normal.

The protesters have held the square off and on since January 25, most recently blocking it off to all traffic since July 8. Young activists -- many of whom responded with delight on finding out I was American -- had erected checkpoints around the square, controlling who could enter and checking IDs of anyone who wanted to cross. Inside the square, people camped out and chanted for the end of the military-run government that has since taken over.

But outside the square, many Egyptians expressed frustration with the protesters, arguing that it was time for them to go home. One Egyptian man told me that he'd marched in February, when one of his friends had been killed by state security, but that he had since become disillusioned with the protest movement. Ramadan, which began this morning, has already raised tensions in the city. The daily fast, the heat, and the uncertain political situation has left many Egyptians on edge.

On Monday morning, plainclothes police carrying guns ordered the protesters to leave. When many remained, dozens of police trucks parked just outside the square. Hundreds of riot police marched in Tahrir and forced out the protesters, reportedly aided by angry, club-wielding civilians. A handful of tanks and at least a few dozen men in camouflage army uniforms were also present. Though past Tahrir protests had seen thousands of peaceful demonstrators defying police and remaining in the square by virtue of their sheer numbers, the increasingly small demonstration appeared to have been dispersed quickly.

Smoke over Hama, Syria, Sunday: human rights activists say residents have taken to the streets after tanks entered the city.

(CNN) -- Syrian tanks stormed the flashpoint city of Hama early Sunday in one of several clashes nationwide that left at least 67 dead and more than 100 injured, human rights groups said.

At least 49 people were killed in Hama and 13 in neighboring Deir Ezzour, the London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights told CNN. Two others were killed in Soran, on the outskirts of Hama. And three people were killed in Daraa province, the group said.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said security forces were responding to "armed groups" in Hama who blocked streets with barricades and terrorized citizens by firing from the rooftops of buildings, while human rights groups described the arrival of tanks as a raid on the city.

Two police officers were killed in clashes in Hama, SANA said, and "armed terrorist groups" had taken to the streets in Deir Ezzour, attacking police headquarters and stealing weapons.

"The law-enforcement forces are still pursuing these armed groups and deal with the situation there in suitable ways," the government news agency said.

In Hama, throngs of residents to take to the streets in an attempt to block the tanks, a local activist said. More than 100 were injured in the city, according to the Local Coordination Committees of Syria.

Tanks rolling near the border met fierce resistance from residents, said Omar al Habbal, a member of the committees, an affiliation of groups that reports on protests in the nation.

BEIRUT—Syrian soldiers and tanks executing a nationwide crackdown on regime opponents surrounded the city of Hama on Thursday, an activist said. Forces also used clubs to disperse 2,000 demonstrators on a northern university campus.

Mr. Assad, who inherited power from his father in 2000, is trying to crush an uprising that exploded nearly two months ago and is now posing the gravest threat to his family's 40-year ruling dynasty. The level of violence is intensifying as forces move into more volatile areas, and the U.S. called the crackdown "barbaric."

CAIRO — Groups of men armed with knives and sticks attacked thousands of protesters trying to march to the headquarters of Egypt's military rulers Saturday, setting off fierce street clashes and leaving more than 100 injured, most lightly. Security fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The clashes come as tensions mount between the military council that took control of the country after a popular uprising ousted ex-President Hosni Mubarak and activists who want them to move faster in bringing former regime officials to justice and setting a date for the transition to civilian rule.

The military has appeared impatient with the pressure, accusing activists of treason, warning protesters against "harming national interests" and calling on "honorable" Egyptians to confront actions that disrupt a return to normal life.

An estimated 10,000 people set out from downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square but were stopped from reaching the military headquarters in the eastern Abbasiyah neighborhood by a line of army barricades. Along the way, they chanted slogans against the military council's delay in implementing their demands.

The march coincided with the 59th anniversary of the 1952 military coup that toppled the monarchy and brought a series of military leaders to office, ending with Mubarak.

"Down with the ruler of the military," the protesters chanted.

Bands of men armed with knives and sticks set upon them from side roads and from in front of the military barricades, setting off pitched street battles in which both sides threw punches and hurled rocks.

(Reuters) - Government forces fired machine guns on Thursday to halt a protest against Yemen's entrenched president, wounding dozens, and Gulf states sought to revive talks on a power transition to stem the rising bloodshed.

An opposition leader told Reuters the secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC) was due in Sanaa on Saturday to try to resurrect a deal to end the crisis which fell through last month when President Ali Abdullah Saleh refused to sign.

Breaching a lockdown imposed by authorities, more than 10,000 people on Saturday poured onto the streets of Malaysian capital in the biggest political rally in years to demand electoral reforms.

People came out in fair numbers for the opposition-backed rally to bring pressure on Prime Minister Najib Razak’s long ruling coalition to usher in electoral reforms and more transparency ahead of national polls early next year.

Police fired tear gas and detained more than 514 people as they sealed off all major roads leading to the city centre in the capital, closed train stations and deployed trucks mounted with water cannons to thwart the rally.

Many were held at public area where they had gathered to march to independence stadium in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Thousands of other marchers were also trying to make their way to the venue, shouting slogans ‘long live the people’ and ‘we want electoral reforms’

Police have declared the protest illegal, warning of chaos in the streets. Hundreds of policemen, many armed with batons and anti-riot gear and backed by water cannon, have been deployed in strategic locations around the capital.

The rally marked the culmination of a campaign launched by opposition parties who have accused Mr. Najib’s national front government of clinging to power for 54-years through electoral frauds.

The rally, called by the non-governmental organisation Bersih 2.0 (meaning clean in Malay language), was to be held at the city centre but after Prime Minister Najib suggested that the march be held inside a stadium, Bersih chief Ambiga Sreenevasan agreed.

Egyptian security forces firing tear gas clashed with more than 5,000 rock-throwing protesters in central Cairo late Tuesday, leaving dozens injured in the latest unrest to rattle the country, witnesses and medical officials said.

Clouds of tear gas and the wail of police sirens engulfed Tahrir Square as lines of security forces in riot gear battled to regain control of the central plaza from the demonstrators, many of them family members of the more than 850 people killed during the revolution that toppled Egypt's longtime ruler, Hosni Mubarak.

The families are frustrated with what they perceive as the slow prosecution of security officers believed to be responsible for the deaths of some 850 protesters during the 18-day uprising.

Rocks and shattered glass littered the streets around Tahrir, as protesters chanted: "Down with the military junta." Injured demonstrators lay on the ground, some bloodied and dazed, before the clashes ended after Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy issued an order before dawn Wednesday for the security services to stand down.

The confrontation began Tuesday, when security forces cleared a sit-in outside the state TV building by the families of the slain protesters, said Nourredine, an engineer who gave only his first name.

"I was in front of the state TV building this morning when the security forces attacked," he said. "Since then, things have been escalating."

The protesters regrouped Tuesday evening outside the Interior Ministry, where rumor had it that two demonstrators wounded earlier in the day had been taken. It was not immediately clear what sparked the violence outside the ministry, but eventually protesters were hurling stones and security forces firing volleys of tear gas and blocking off streets around the building.

Replacing Mubarak by the armed forces hasn't given the Egyptians, the full democracy they desire!

Experts conduct radiation check following nuclear leak in Japan - Reuters.

Radiation meters will be distributed to about 34,000 children living in the largest city near the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant to monitor their exposure levels, a city official said Tuesday.

The decision to hand out the meters comes amid growing concern over the safety of children as the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima plant drags on, posing potential long-term health risks.

The devices, called dosimeters, will be distributed in September to children between the ages of four and 15 living in Fukushima city, which has recorded relatively high radiation levels since a massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami severely damaged the nuclear plant.

Dosimeters have already been supplied to area schools but not to each student, according to city official Koichi Kato. Other towns in the area have begun similar measures, but Fukushima's plan is the largest to date.

"We intend to continue the program for about three months," Kato said. "We are still considering whether to expand it further to include other residents."

Fukushima city, where about 300,000 people live, is 45 miles (60 kilometers) from the nuclear facility.

The government has established a 12-mile (20-kilometer) "no-go" zone around the plant, and a further 6-mile (10-kilometer) ring outside of that in which residents — particularly pregnant women and children — have been instructed to take special precautions and be prepared to evacuate.
