Jammu: As Indian and Pakistan troops exchanged sweets on Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on Independence Day, the celebrations were marred by violation of ceasefire from across the border in Samba sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

Led by Mujahid Regiment Commandant Colonel Umar Gul, Pakistan army officers met Indian counterparts led by Colonel Cristopher at Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district and greeted them on India's 65th Independence Day, army officials said.

The Pakistani contingent gifted sweets and fruits to the Indian officials who offered them tea and sweets during the flag meeting that lasted an hour.

However, the bonhomie along the LoC was marred by ceasefire violation by Pakistani rangers who indulged in unprovoked firing on Indian post along International Border (IB) in Ramgarh belt of Samba sector early on Monday.

Pakistani troops from Imran post resorted to small arms firing on Ballard forward Border out Post along the International Border in Ramgarh sub-sector of the district around 3:45 am this morning, BSF DIG (G Branch), S Oberoi said.

"The unprovoked firing continued for 25 minutes. BSF troops effectively retaliated back," the DIG said, adding that there was no casualty or injury to any one in the firing on this side.

"It was a clear case of ceasefire violation," he said, adding a protest would be lodged with the Pakistan authorities.

In one month, Maharashtra witnessed three instances of police firing over three weeks, which coincided with the monsoon session of the Legislature. On Friday, when the session ended in chaos, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and his Deputy Ajit Pawar (NCP) pointed to a planned conspiracy in the latest firing at Mawal in Pune district, in which three farmers were killed. The farmers were protesting against diversion of water from the Pawna dam through a pipeline to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).The government initially defended the police action but when television channels aired footage of the August 9 protest, it had no choice but to suspend at least eight policemen, who were seen attacking private vehicles or firing at the fleeing farmers. Mr. Chavan said a high-level inquiry by a retired Bombay High Court judge was ordered and that was the maximum the government could do.

Home Minister R.R. Patil too defended the police and even brought in a twist to the situation, saying the first firing came from a private vehicle. The bullet which injured a bystander was sent for examination. He, however, admitted that the police failed to prevent the protest from turning violent despite a heavy deployment of force.

No excuse

While the government seeks refuge in the conspiracy theory, it has no excuse for the firing sans warning, as local villagers have pointed out. Mr. Chavan, after the Mumbai bomb blasts last month, openly said he wished that the Home department were with the Congress. This time too the Home department has come in for strong criticism. Right from July 25 when the police opened fire at protesters after a truck mowed down Warkaris returning from a pilgrimage on the Jalna-Ambad highway, the Opposition has been clamouring for the resignation of Mr. Patil. Opposition leaders even met the Governor demanding the dismissal of the government.

Both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature were adjourned on Tuesday after the Opposition created a ruckus over police firing in Maval taluk of Pune district in the morning.

A group of farmers from Maval, led by leaders of all parties, staged a protest along the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway against the government's decision to supply water from the Pawna dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune.

Home Minister R.R. Patil told the Assembly that the mob vandalised buses and hurled stones on the police and the people.

However, Leader of the Opposition Eknath Khadse and others contended that at least two persons, including a woman, Kantabai Thaker, lost their lives and 14 others were injured in the firing.

Seeks explanation

The firing was on even as the House was in session, the Opposition said, demanding an immediate explanation from Mr. Patil.

“Firing inevitable”

Mr. Patil later told journalists that the firing was inevitable as the crowd was setting fire to cars and damaging property, apart from holding up traffic. About 20 policemen were injured and two officers, an additional superintendent of police and one police inspector, were in serious condition, he said.

In one of the worst instances of public protest in the U.K. in recent years, an irate mob went on a rampage in north London, setting vehicles on fire and indulging in looting to protest against the killing of a 29-year-old local man in police firing.

Eight police men were injured overnight in the violence, including one with a head wound, and admitted to hospital after trouble broke out in Tottenham following the killing of Mark Duggan, a father of four, in the firing by the cops.

About 300 people had gathered outside a police station on the Tottenham High Road, Saturday evening, demanding “justice”.

The protest was earlier peaceful but turned violent when police cars were set alight using petrol bombs.

The situation was brought under control by early on Sunday morning.

The London Ambulance Service said separately that a total of 10 people had been treated and nine taken to hospital.

The protest took the form of a riot when hooded youths gathered and set fire to a bus and other vehicles in the area.

Shops in the area were looted with people seen pushing away shopping trolleys full of goods.

Duggan was killed by a specialist police team that deals with gun crime in London’s Afro-Caribbean communities. He was in a minicab when he was challenged by the police team and then killed in an exchange of fire on Thursday evening.

Oslo:  A spokesman for Norway's Labor Party says a gunman opened fire at the party's youth camp outside Oslo, shooting several people following the bomb blast at the government headquarters in the capital.

It wasn't immediately clear if the attacks were related.

(Reuters) - Government forces fired machine guns on Thursday to halt a protest against Yemen's entrenched president, wounding dozens, and Gulf states sought to revive talks on a power transition to stem the rising bloodshed.

An opposition leader told Reuters the secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC) was due in Sanaa on Saturday to try to resurrect a deal to end the crisis which fell through last month when President Ali Abdullah Saleh refused to sign.

Police in Mumbai have given a leading Bollywood film star security after two men were arrested as they allegedly prepared to fire shots at his home, newspapers reported on Friday.

Mumbai police crime branch head Himanshu Roy said that underworld figure Ravi Pujari had ordered the men to open fire at the residence and leave a threatening note for the celebrity.

The officer did not identify the alleged target and said only that the incident took place in the western suburbs, which is home to a number of actors, producers and directors.

"The celebrity earlier did not complain about any threat from anybody," he was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

"But now he has been provided security."

Two 9mm pistols, nine cartridges and three mobile phones were recovered from the scene on Wednesday night, he added. The pair, aged 25 and 32, are currently in police custody.

(Reuters) - Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged sustained cross-border fire on Sunday, security officials said, a day after an Indian soldier was killed by Pakistani troops while patrolling one of the world's most heavily guarded borders.

The two sides exchanged small arms fire for 30 minutes early on Sunday at a border post 30 km (18 miles) from Jammu, the winter capital of the disputed Kashmir region in north India.

"Pakistani soldiers opened unprovoked firing on our Umra Wali post," said a spokesman for the paramilitary Indian Border Security Force. "We responded to their fire effectively."

(Reuters) - Israeli gunfire killed four people after dozens of Palestinian refugees infiltrated the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria on Sunday during pro-Palestinian protests, Israeli media reports said.

The Israeli military declined immediate comment.

The incident, in the village of Majdal Shams, occurred on the day Palestinians held demonstrations to mark the "Nakba" or catastrophe of Israel's founding in 1948.

I wish this strife of 63 years ends soon, somehow!

(Reuters) - Plain-clothed gunmen opened fire on protesters in Yemen's southern city of Taiz on Saturday, wounding at least seven people, witnesses said, and a Gulf envoy was due to arrive to help revive a plan to end the crisis.

Protesters have been demonstrating across Yemen for months to try to oust President Ali Abdullah Saleh in an uprising inspired by movements that toppled the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia. A plan negotiated by neighboring Gulf states for Saleh to step down fell through last month when Saleh refused to sign.
