A protest broke out at a mosque in the Damascus district of Kafarsouseh after the Morning Prayer. An eyewitness just spoke to Al Jazeera, saying:

"Security forces and shabiha thugs arrived at the mosque, first using sound bombs and teargas to stop the protest. Protesters threw teargas canisters back at them and also used some rocks. Security forces responded with live ammunition, and 8 protesters were injured. One man was severely wounded after being shot in the chest.

"The Red Crescent arrived at the scene, but protesters refused to hand over the injured in fear that the Red Crescent would be forced to hand over the wounded to the security forces.

"Protesters were pushed back into the mosque, and the imam, Ousama Rifai, went out to negotiate with the security forces to let them leave. Rifai was then arrested, as well as many others who left the mosque when security forces said they were free to leave in groups of 10.

"There has now been a call for protesters to head towards Abaseen Square."

In a fresh spurt of sectarian violence targeting Shias, at least 11 people were killed in Balochistan on Saturday; taking the toll over the past 24 hours to 19. The banned outfit, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) — which has targeted Shias in the past as part of its agenda to turn Pakistan into a Sunni state — had claimed responsibility for Friday's attack on the office of a private transport company where pilgrims were awaiting for a coach to take them to Iran.

Though no one had claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack on a van carrying people to Quetta from Hazara Town area, police suspect this to be part of the sectarian violence as the victims were Shias again. According to Balochistan's Inspector General Police Amin Hashim, unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at the van; resulting in the death of seven people on the spot and four others en route the hospital.

Following this spurt in violence, police raided various places in sensitive areas and rounded up over 200 persons for interrogation. The attacks led to protests across Quetta; resulting in arson. Pained by the continuing sectarian violence in different parts of the country, civil society drew a connection between this spurt and the recent release of LeJ chief Malik Ishaq.

An accused in the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Ishaq's family was apparently being provided financial assistance by the Punjab Government.

After the attack, hundreds of Shia Muslims gathered on Barori Road in protest, chanting slogans against the government and the police for their failure to check sectarian killings.

The angry protesters also blocked the main road.

Mexican authorities sent in an extra 1,800 police Saturday to fight the country's gruesome and deadly drug war, with at least 41 people slain over the weekend including 10 who were decapitated.

Fully 1,800 federal agents were sent into Michoacan state on Saturday, in a battle there mainly with the Knights Templars, a splinter group of the La Familia drugs cartel.

The reinforcements were backed by 170 vehicles, 15 ambulances and 4 MI and Black Hawk helicopters, the Public Safety office announced.

National Security Council spokesman Alejandro Poire called it a "reinforcement operation faced with the possibility of greater mobilization by organized crime groups."

"They are waging an absurd war, to the death, for control of criminal turf and drug trafficking routes to the United States," he stressed.

The federal government already has about 50,000 army troops and thousands of federal police in its fight against drug cartels. It blames the groups for most of the 37,000 people killed since it started a military offensive against the cartels in December 2006.

And this weekend was no exception to the staggering degree of fearsome bloodletting, at times meant to intimidate and also often inflicted when groups of people refuse to cooperate with drug traffickers.

A thousand troops of the Frontier Constabulary have been sent into Karachi with orders to shoot to kill after three days and nights of political violence claimed at least 65 lives in Pakistan's biggest city.

The violence has been blamed on loyalists of former coalition partners, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP).

The MQM represents Urdu speakers known as mohajirs - the Urdu word for migrants - whose families moved to Pakistan from India during partition in 1947, while ANP supporters are Pashto speakers, who come from north-west Pakistan.

Violence between the two groups has claimed hundreds of lives in Karachi since the mid-'80s.

''At least 65 people have been killed in the violence since Tuesday. The number of injured is around 100,'' Sharjeel Memon, the information minister in the southern province of Sindh, said. Other reports put the death toll as high as 81.

Egyptian security forces firing tear gas clashed with more than 5,000 rock-throwing protesters in central Cairo late Tuesday, leaving dozens injured in the latest unrest to rattle the country, witnesses and medical officials said.

Clouds of tear gas and the wail of police sirens engulfed Tahrir Square as lines of security forces in riot gear battled to regain control of the central plaza from the demonstrators, many of them family members of the more than 850 people killed during the revolution that toppled Egypt's longtime ruler, Hosni Mubarak.

The families are frustrated with what they perceive as the slow prosecution of security officers believed to be responsible for the deaths of some 850 protesters during the 18-day uprising.

Rocks and shattered glass littered the streets around Tahrir, as protesters chanted: "Down with the military junta." Injured demonstrators lay on the ground, some bloodied and dazed, before the clashes ended after Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy issued an order before dawn Wednesday for the security services to stand down.

The confrontation began Tuesday, when security forces cleared a sit-in outside the state TV building by the families of the slain protesters, said Nourredine, an engineer who gave only his first name.

"I was in front of the state TV building this morning when the security forces attacked," he said. "Since then, things have been escalating."

The protesters regrouped Tuesday evening outside the Interior Ministry, where rumor had it that two demonstrators wounded earlier in the day had been taken. It was not immediately clear what sparked the violence outside the ministry, but eventually protesters were hurling stones and security forces firing volleys of tear gas and blocking off streets around the building.

Replacing Mubarak by the armed forces hasn't given the Egyptians, the full democracy they desire!

Syrian Crisis! Syrian troops seize village near Turkish border!

CAIRO — Syrian troops deploying tanks and heavy machine-gun fire took over a village in the country’s northwest Saturday, activists said, bringing Syria’s military closer to the Turkish border in an apparent bid to block an escape corridor to Turkey for refugees and defectors.

Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the takeover of the village of Bdama, just a few miles from the border, will stop food and water reaching some 2,000 displaced people in the mountains on the Syrian side.

Clashes between troops and anti-government protesters in the area began about two weeks ago and have forced thousands to flee their homes. More than 10,000 Syrians are sheltering in Turkish refugee camps across the border, rights groups say.

It seems Bashar Al-Assad is pushing Turkey into a position where they would declare war against Syria!

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Dozens of people were detained by police in the Russian capital Moscow on Saturday after gay rights activists and their opponents clashed at the sixth straight attempt to hold a gay pride parade.

Gay rights activists had hoped that Moscow's new mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, would finally allow parades after years of being refused permission by the authorities.

Gay rights activists who gathered near the Kremlin walls were met by far right groups who attacked them as soon as they raised their rainbow flags and posters. The police swiftly intervened.

Though the Govt., there decriminalised Homosexuality, there is a strong opposition to hold any rallies by gays.

KOLKATA: Clashes were reported from different parts of the state ever since assembly poll results were announced on Friday in which the Trinamool Congress defeated the Left, and till Monday there were four deaths,

To take stock of the post poll violence in the state, governor M K Narayanan this afternoon held a meeting with Bengal's chief secretary Samar Ghosh and other top bureaucrats . The governor had earlier expressed his concern over the law and order situation in the state and asked people to maintain peace.

Earlier on Monday, CPM leaders led by Surjya Kanta Mishra met the governor and complained about the violence. 


With Elections Over, it is time to return to normalcy!

Christians protest Egyptian violence!

CAIRO (AP) — Hundreds of Egyptians, many of them Coptic Christians, demonstrated on Monday in Cairo to protest Muslim-Christian clashes that left 12 dead and a church burned.

Demonstrators, who numbered about 1,000 by midday, said they feared that some in Egypt seek to create an Islamic state that would marginalize the Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's nearly 80 million population. Most are Coptic Christians.
