Syrian security forces have shot dead at least seven protesters on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday, activists say.

Protests erupted in many towns and cities on Tuesday morning, after Muslims performed morning prayers marking the end of Ramadan.

The Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC) activist network said six of the deaths occurred in the southern province of Deraa and one in Homs.

Syrian security forces reportedly also opened fire on protesters in the town of Deir ez-Zor.

LCC said a "huge" protest was formed as worshippers emerged from the al-Omari mosque in Daraa and marched to the town's cemetery. Muslims traditionally visit graves on the first day of Eid.

Large demonstrations were also reported in cities including Deraa, Idlib, Hama and Homs, and in Damascus suburbs.

A day earlier, security forces killed at least eight people and wounded dozens in raids across the country, according to opposition activists.

The rights group Avaaz said five people were killed in the town of Sarameen in Idlib province, when security forces stormed the town.

Tanks and armoured vehicles rolled into various flashpoint areas, including the towns of Rastan and Heet in Homs province.

UN meeting

Meanwhile, in New York, UN Security Council ambassadors met behind closed doors on Monday to discuss rival UN resolutions on Syria.

Syrian security forces killed four people after stepping up security around Damascus before Friday prayers, which have been followed by protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s government for the last five months.

The protesters were killed in the eastern town of Deir al- Zour and Douma, a suburb of the capital, said Mahmoud Merhi, head of the Arab Organization for Human Rights. Security is “tight” around the Rukneddine, Harasta, Douma and Muadamiya neighborhoods of Damascus, he said by telephone today. The deployment follows raids and arrests of dissidents late yesterday in Homs, Deir al-Zour and Daraa, where the uprising began in mid-March, Merhi said.

The protests are part of the wave of unrest across the Middle East and North Africa this year that has unseated the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia. Assad, who succeeded his father as president after his death in 2000, has blamed the demonstrations on foreign-inspired plots.

Smoke over Hama, Syria, Sunday: human rights activists say residents have taken to the streets after tanks entered the city.

(CNN) -- Syrian tanks stormed the flashpoint city of Hama early Sunday in one of several clashes nationwide that left at least 67 dead and more than 100 injured, human rights groups said.

At least 49 people were killed in Hama and 13 in neighboring Deir Ezzour, the London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights told CNN. Two others were killed in Soran, on the outskirts of Hama. And three people were killed in Daraa province, the group said.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said security forces were responding to "armed groups" in Hama who blocked streets with barricades and terrorized citizens by firing from the rooftops of buildings, while human rights groups described the arrival of tanks as a raid on the city.

Two police officers were killed in clashes in Hama, SANA said, and "armed terrorist groups" had taken to the streets in Deir Ezzour, attacking police headquarters and stealing weapons.

"The law-enforcement forces are still pursuing these armed groups and deal with the situation there in suitable ways," the government news agency said.

In Hama, throngs of residents to take to the streets in an attempt to block the tanks, a local activist said. More than 100 were injured in the city, according to the Local Coordination Committees of Syria.

Tanks rolling near the border met fierce resistance from residents, said Omar al Habbal, a member of the committees, an affiliation of groups that reports on protests in the nation.
