Oslo: Adrian Pracon was determined to return to the island where he nearly died. A month ago, terrified and panicked, the 21-year-old played dead while Norwegian killer Ander Behring Breivik stood over his body, the gun so close he could feel the warmth of the barrel.

Pracon is one of about 600 survivors of the massacre at Utoeya island, where Breivik killed 69 people, most of them youngsters at a Labour Party youth camp.

On Saturday they returned to the island for the first time, a day before a national day of remembrance in Norway.

"I went back to the place where I got shot", Pracon told Reuters.  "The first thing I did was to sit down, quietly and I cried for a long time. I cried for the people I saw killed there.  I laid flowers and lit candles for them."

Pracon came face to face with the killer several times on July 22. During one encounter, he saw him coming out of the woods and shooting at people.

"He was shouting that he was going to kill us all," said Pracon. "He turned towards me. You feel trapped, like you have no place to go or that there is nothing you can do. You just hope that he is going to shoot in the head, in the heart to make it go fast. All I could say was: 'Don't shoot'."

"I remember him pointing the machine gun at me for quite a long time before he took it down, turned and walked away."

Four others injured in attack at Von Postbreen glacier on remote island of Spitsbergen.

A Briton has reportedly been mauled to death by a polar bear that injured four others in a tour group at a Norwegian beauty spot.

The tourists killed the bear at the Von Postbreen glacier on the remote island of Spitsbergen, according to reports by Norwegian news agency NTB and other outlets.

A spokeswoman for the Svalbard district governor's office, said: "One person has died and four others are injured. Their injuries are serious."

She said the five were travelling with a "British group" but could not give specific details about their nationalities.

The district governor's office issued a statement saying the authorities had received news of the attack at 7.30am on Friday. "The four injured people are now at the Longyearbyen hospital. An ambulance is now scheduled to fly the patients to the hospital in Tromsoe."

Details have begun to emerge of some of the 68 victims who were killed by Anders Breivik during his shooting spree on the Norwegian Island of Utoya.

Off-duty policeman Trond Berntsen, 51, died while saving his son.

The names of the dead were revealed as an estimated 150,000 people gathered to mourn them and the eight others who died in the Oslo bombing.

It is hoped that identification of all the 76 victims will be completed by Thursday.

One of the first Utoya victims to be named was 51-year-oldTrond Berntsen, the stepbrother of Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

OSLO — The Norwegian man charged Saturday with a pair of attacks in Oslo that killed at least 92 people left behind a detailed manifesto outlining his preparations and calling for a Christian war to defend Europe against the threat of Muslim domination, according to Norwegian and American officials familiar with the investigation.

As stunned Norwegians grappled with the deadliest attack in the country since World War II, a portrait began to emerge of the suspect, Anders Behring Breivik, 32. The police identified him as a right-wing fundamentalist Christian, while acquaintances described him as a gun-loving Norwegian obsessed with what he saw as the threats of multiculturalism and Muslimimmigration.

“We are not sure whether he was alone or had help,” a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised news conference. “What we know is that he is right wing and a Christian fundamentalist.”

In the 1,500-page manifesto, posted on the Web hours before the attacks, Mr. Breivik recorded a day-by-day diary of months of planning for the attacks, and claimed to be part of a small group that intended to “seize political and military control of Western European countries and implement a cultural conservative political agenda.”

He predicted a conflagration that would kill or injure more than a million people, adding, “The time for dialogue is over. We gave peace a chance. The time for armed resistance has come.”

Oslo:  The suspect in Norway's twin attacks that killed at least 92 people admitted responsibility and said the carnage was long planned as the nation mourned victims of its worst violence since World War II.

Anders Behring Breivik, 32, was arrested for allegedly shooting at least 85 people dead at a youth Labour Party meeting on an island and killing seven more in a car bomb explosion which ripped through government buildings in Oslo.

"He admitted responsibility," Behring Breivik's lawyer Geir Lippestad told Norwegian media. While there was no official confirmation of the man's identity, he was widely named as Anders Behring Breivik by local media.

"He feels that it was cruel to have to carry out these acts but that, in his head, it was necessary," Lippestad said. Oslo police spokeswoman Viola Bjelland told AFP on Sunday that the suspect was "cooperative."

King Harald V, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and other ministers were to attend mass at Oslo cathedral on Sunday morning.

A rambling 1,500-page tract apparently written by Behring Breivik said he has been preparing the "martyrdom operation" since at least autumn 2009.

The Internet document -- part diary, part bomb-making manual and part political rant in which he details his Islamophobia - explains how he set up front mining and farming businesses to prepare the attacks for which he was arrested on Friday.

OSLO—Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian man accused of carrying out one of the worst massacres in Europe since World War II, has taken responsibility for the rampage, telling his lawyer that the killings were "atrocious" but "necessary."

The Friday attacks, including the bombing of a government building in Oslo and a shooting spree at a political youth camp on a nearby island, left at least 93 people dead in what authorities describe as a deranged attempt to declare war on the forces of multiculturalism and pluralism that have taken hold in this small Scandinavian country.

Police on Sunday continued to follow leads that others were involved in the attacks and local media reported that authorities were searching a house in Oslo in connection with the case.

Norway's ruling, center-left Labor Party, which has long championed the benefits of immigration and multiculturalism, appeared to be the primary target of the attack.

Norway, a rural country of 4.6 million roughly the size of New Mexico, has little recent history of political extremism, much less violence, and the attacks are fueling concern across Europe that the anti-immigrant underswell that has swept the Continent in recent years could metastasize into violence, suddenly and unexpectedly.

Unlike other Scandinavian countries, including Sweden and Denmark, Norway doesn't have a mainstream far-right party. Mr. Breivik was once a member of Norway's conservative Progress Party, the country's second-largest political party after the Labor Party. The Progress Party, which sought to distance itself from Mr. Breivik, has taken a hard line on immigration in the past but is less extreme than the populist antiforeigner parties that have taken hold elsewhere in Scandinavia.

Mr. Breivik "has said that he believed the actions were atrocious, but that in his head they were necessary," Geir Lippestad, Mr. Breivik's lawyer, told independent TV2 news.

A powerful blast, suspected to be a car bomb, rocked government and media buildings in Norway's capital Oslo on Friday, causing 'deaths and injuries' and dealing heavy damage.

Police said a bomb was behind the explosion and Norwegian media reported that at least two people died, while many claimed that 'hundreds' of live may have been lost.

"A powerful explosion has taken place in the government quarter," Norwegian police said in a statement.

"Police can confirm there were deaths and injuries following the explosion in the government quarter this afternoon," police added later.

Images on Norwegian television showed the prime minister's office and other buildings heavily damaged, sidewalks covered in broken glass and smoke rising from the area.
