ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — At least 10 people were killed in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday when a suspected suicide car bomb exploded in a crowd of Shiite worshippers near a mosque, police officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Sunni militants were suspected in the attack, which occurred on a day when Muslims celebrate Id al-Fitr, a holiday at the end of Ramadan. At least 20 people were wounded in the blast, officials said.

The explosion took place in the Murriabad neighborhood of Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan Province. Sectarian attacks are frequent in the city.

Shiites are a minority in the country and Sunnis hold a majority. Though both sects generally coexist peacefully, extremist Sunni groups often make religious minorities their targets.

A low-level insurgency by nationalists of the Baluch ethnic group has simmered in the province. Taliban militants have also found a safe haven in the province.

Peshawar: A bomb planted in a child's tricycle exploded outside a shop in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least eight people and damaging several stores and hotels, police said.

The attack occurred in the main bazaar in the town of Risalpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Mohammad Hussain, police chief for surrounding Nowshera district. Shoppers were buying goods for an upcoming Muslim holiday when the bomb went off. At least nine people were wounded, Hussain said.

Chandigarh: At least five people were killed and over a dozen injured in a blast in a cracker factory in Haryana's Karnal district late Monday, police said.

Located in village Goh Mughal Majra, the factory engulfed in fire following the blast that occurred at about 6.30 pm.

The injured were rushed to different hospitals in Karnal town, 130 km from Chandigarh, and were being treated, police officials said.

Karnal deputy commissioner Neelam Pradeep Kasni visited rushed to the trauma centre of the hospital and sent officers to the blast site.

Residents of the area told the police that the sound of the blast was heard even five km away.

At least 39 people died in tragic incidents, including bombings and bus accidents, across Pakistan on Sunday, the country's 65th Independence Day.

Eleven people were killed and 21 injured in a remote-controlled blast at a hotel in southwestern Balochistan province.

At least 25 people died when a bus carrying 80 people fell into a ravine in the mountainous Veesaab area near Hub, 20km from the port city of Karachi, while three Pakistani paramilitary troopers were killed and 25 were injured in a rocket attack on their camp in the tribal area of North Waziristan.

In Balochistan, explosive material was fixed to the wall of the two-storeyed hotel in Dera Allah Yar city, some 250 km from provincial capital Quetta, Xinhua reported.

The blast brought the building down to ground, reports said.

Sources told Geo News that the militants hid an explosives-filled bag inside the hotel and blasted it with a remote control.

Witnesses said there were around 30 people on the ground floor of the building when the blast took place. However, there was no one was on the first floor.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the hotel blast.

Media reports said the toll in the bus accident in the mountainous Veesaab area near Karachi may increase, with over 35 injured people being admitted to hospital.

The passengers were on their way back from a pilgrimage.

Initial investigation showed that poor road conditions due to recent rains in the area and overloading in the bus were to blame for the accident, traffic police said.

(Reuters) - A bomb ripped through a two-story hotel in Pakistan's restive southwest on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and wounding nearly 20, police said.

No-one claimed responsibility for the attack in Dera Allah Yar, a town in the southwestern province of Baluchistan, although police said they suspected ethnic Baluch separatists.

"The bomb was planted inside the hotel and it exploded when a large number of people were sitting in a hall," local police official Javed Gharsheen told Reuters. The town is around 300 km (185 miles) east of provincial capital Quetta.

Witnesses said the two-story building was destroyed. Rescue workers and police were removing the rubble to find any survivors.

Police said the death toll could rise as several people were believed to have trapped in the rubble.

Baluch militants have been waging a low-level insurgency for decades for more autonomy and control over the natural resources of their impoverished region.

The activists often target government installations, security forces, gas pipelines, railway tracks and electricity pylons.

Two found guilty in Kozhikode twin blast case!

In the first verdict in NIA-investigated terror case in Kerala, a court on Thursday held suspected LeT militant T. Naseer and another man guilty of offences in the March 3, 2006, twin blasts case in Kozhikode.

The CBI Special court here, the designated court hearing National Investigation Agency cases, however, acquitted two other accused. While Abdul Halim got the benefit of doubt, there was no evidence against C. Yusuf, Justice S. Vijay Kumar said.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Friday.

The court held there was sufficient material against Naseer, an accused in 2008 Bangalore blasts case, and Shafas and found them guilty in the Kozhikode blasts in which two policemen and a porter were injured.

NIA had filed the charge sheet in August 2010 against eight men, listing Naseer as prime accused.

The accused had been chargsheeted under various Sections of IPC, including Sect 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), relevant sections of Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act, 1967, and Explosive Substance Act.

Naseer is also named as an accused in the burning of a Tamil Nadu state bus in 2005 at nearby Kalamassery by suspected PDP activists to protest against PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani’s detention in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blasts which claimed 58 lives and left over 200 injured.

While one of the accused Fayas was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kashmir, another accused Shammi Firoz was made an approver. Two others who are at large abroad have been declared as wanted.

About 58 prosecution witnesses were examined.

The US Navy Seals and other troops whose helicopter was shot down in eastern Afghanistan had rushed to the mountainous area to help a US army ranger unit that was under fire from insurgents, two US officials said Sunday.

The rescue team had completed the mission, subduing the attackers who had the rangers pinned down, and were departing in their Chinook helicopter when the aircraft was apparently hit, an official said.

Thirty Americans and eight Afghans were killed in the crash, making it the deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war in Afghanistan. The rangers, special operations forces who work regularly with the Seals, afterwards secured the crash site in the Tangi Joy Zarin area of Wardak province, about 60 miles (97km) southwest of Kabul, an official said.

On Sunday, Nato began an operation to recover the remains of the large transport helicopter, while Afghan and American forces battled insurgents in the region of the crash. The clashes Sunday did not appear to involve the troops around the crash site.

"There have been a small number of limited engagements in the same district as yesterday's helicopter crash, however those clashes have not been in the direct vicinity of the crash site," NATO said in a statement. "As of now, we have no reporting to indicate any coalition casualties resulting from these engagements."

Normal life was disrupted here on Wednesday in response to a 12-hour strike called by the All Manipur Students’Union (AMSU) to protest the bomb blast on the outskirts of the state capital in Imphal West district.

Official sources said all transport services between Manipur and rest of neighbouring states were cancelled because of the strike which began at 5 a.m.

The strike exempted media and essential services like medical and water supply.

Five persons were killed and at least eight others seriously injured when suspected militants exploded a powerful bomb at Sangakpham area near the guest house of Autonomous District Council (ADC) office on Monday.

An official statement said the blast was triggered by the militant outfit, NSCN-IM.

Four killed in Manipur blast.

At least four persons including a student were killed and a few others injured when a powerful bomb exploded near an educational institution in Imphal West district of Manipur this afternoon.

Suspected militants tied the bomb to a two wheeler and it exploded at around 2 PM killing four persons on the spot, official sources said.

The injured were admitted to hospital, they said, adding police have rushed to the spot.

No group has claimed responsibility so far.

A powerful blast, suspected to be a car bomb, rocked government and media buildings in Norway's capital Oslo on Friday, causing 'deaths and injuries' and dealing heavy damage.

Police said a bomb was behind the explosion and Norwegian media reported that at least two people died, while many claimed that 'hundreds' of live may have been lost.

"A powerful explosion has taken place in the government quarter," Norwegian police said in a statement.

"Police can confirm there were deaths and injuries following the explosion in the government quarter this afternoon," police added later.

Images on Norwegian television showed the prime minister's office and other buildings heavily damaged, sidewalks covered in broken glass and smoke rising from the area.

At least eight persons were injured when a bomb went off at a police post in Multan city in Pakistan’s Punjab province, officials said.

Officials had initially said three policemen were killed in the attack but later revised the account after it became clear that no one had died.

Multan police chief Amir Zulfiqar said three policemen were among the injured and that no one was killed.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the blast was caused by a bomb planted in a motorcycle, Mr. Zulfiqar told the media at the site of the attack.

Earlier, district administration chief Zahid Zaman had said that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber but this was dismissed by Mr. Zulfiqar.

Yes, it was, indeed, “a cowardly act of a sick mindset”, as described by Pak PM, Yousuf Raza Gilani!

  A series of bombs and explosions killed 20 people in Afghanistan's southern and eastern flashpoints on Saturday, among them at least eight children and four women, government officials said.
  In the deadliest attack, a vehicle hit a mine in Arghandab district of the southern province of Kandahar, one of the main battlegrounds in the nearly 10-year Taliban-led insurgency against the Kabul government and NATO troops.
  "Today at 10:00 am, 15 civilians were killed, including eight children, four women and three men," the ministry said.
  One woman was also wounded in the explosion, it added.
  Mines and crudely made bombs planted on the side of the road are trademark tactics of the Taliban and other Islamist insurgents fighting to bring down the Western-backed government and evict US-led foreign troops.

There has been an attempt of roping in Taliban into some kind of peace settlement.

Nobody appears to know when Afghanistan will return to Peace?

In the meanwhile, innocent women, children and others are getting killed in gruesome manner!
