Oslo: Adrian Pracon was determined to return to the island where he nearly died. A month ago, terrified and panicked, the 21-year-old played dead while Norwegian killer Ander Behring Breivik stood over his body, the gun so close he could feel the warmth of the barrel.

Pracon is one of about 600 survivors of the massacre at Utoeya island, where Breivik killed 69 people, most of them youngsters at a Labour Party youth camp.

On Saturday they returned to the island for the first time, a day before a national day of remembrance in Norway.

"I went back to the place where I got shot", Pracon told Reuters.  "The first thing I did was to sit down, quietly and I cried for a long time. I cried for the people I saw killed there.  I laid flowers and lit candles for them."

Pracon came face to face with the killer several times on July 22. During one encounter, he saw him coming out of the woods and shooting at people.

"He was shouting that he was going to kill us all," said Pracon. "He turned towards me. You feel trapped, like you have no place to go or that there is nothing you can do. You just hope that he is going to shoot in the head, in the heart to make it go fast. All I could say was: 'Don't shoot'."

"I remember him pointing the machine gun at me for quite a long time before he took it down, turned and walked away."

Ahmedabad: Days after the suspension of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sanjiv Bhatt, the Gujarat government has acted against another senior Gujarat police officer for alleged indiscipline. 

As per reports, Thursday, a chargesheet has been issued against DIG Rahul Sharma for indiscipline and violation of Official Secrets Act (OSA).

As per the chargesheet cleared by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Sharma is being held guilty of passing information to the Nanavati Commission without seeking approval from the government. The Nanavati Commission was set up to probe the Godhra train burning incident and the riots that followed.

Peshawar: At least seven people have been killed and over 20 injured in twin blasts carried out by suicide bombers in Pakistan's Peshawar on Thursday morning. Two female suicide bombers reportedly triggered the blasts killing four policemen and three civilians including a child.

Tariq Jahan: "I have lost my son - if you want to lose yours step forward, otherwise calm down."

The father of a man who was killed along with two others when they were hit by a car during Tuesday's disorder in Birmingham has appealed for calm.

Haroon Jahan, 21, Shahzad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31, died as they protected property. A man aged 32 has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Tariq Jahan urged people to stay calm, and said communities should be united.

About 250 people attended a peaceful vigil on Dudley Road in Winson Green, which began late on Wednesday night.

Mr Jahan stood in the middle of a semi-circle of well-wishers as they lit candles.

The crowd gathered near the scene of the fatal hit-and-run incident, which happened as the three men guarded property along with a crowd of 80 or so people on Tuesday night.

'Bring peace'

Harpreet Singh, 28, who helped to organise the vigil, said: "Let this be a message to other communities, not just Muslims and Sikhs, let's stand together, let's hold candlelight vigils.

Details have begun to emerge of some of the 68 victims who were killed by Anders Breivik during his shooting spree on the Norwegian Island of Utoya.

Off-duty policeman Trond Berntsen, 51, died while saving his son.

The names of the dead were revealed as an estimated 150,000 people gathered to mourn them and the eight others who died in the Oslo bombing.

It is hoped that identification of all the 76 victims will be completed by Thursday.

One of the first Utoya victims to be named was 51-year-oldTrond Berntsen, the stepbrother of Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

Kochi:  The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed Air India to pay interim compensation of Rs.75 lakh each to the kin of 158 passengers who died in an air crash in Mangalore last year.

The direction was made by Justice P.R. Ramachandran Menon following a petition by the family of Mohammed Rafi, who died in the May 18 crash. The court directed Air India to pay the interim compensation in a month's time.

The FBI has begun a preliminary inquiry based on concerns in Congress over a report that media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. sought to hack into the phones of Sept. 11 victims, a law enforcement official said Thursday.

The decision to step in was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King and several other members of Congress wrote to FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

The official stressed that the review was in its infancy but declined to discuss the scope of it or say what steps had been taken. The FBI routinely makes preliminary inquiries into issues raised by lawmakers and others to determine whether a full-blown investigation is needed.

On Friday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed the early stages of an inquiry into the allegations that first surfaced in the U.K.

"There have been members of Congress in the United States who have asked us to investigate those same allegations and we are progressing in that regard using the appropriate criminal law enforcement agencies in the United States," Holder said at a press conference in Australia while attending a meeting of the Attorneys-General of the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

News Corp., based in New York, has been in crisis mode because of a scandal that sank its U.K. newspaper the News of the World.

A rival newspaper reported last week that the News of the World had hacked into the phone of U.K. teenage murder victim Milly Dowler in 2002 and may have impeded a police investigation into her disappearance. More possible victims soon emerged: other child murder victims, 2005 London bombing victims, the families of dead soldiers and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Air India Kanishka victims' families have rejected the Canadian government's offer of $24,000 each for the 1985 bombing that killed all 329 people on board the plane near the Irish coast.

The Kanishka flight 182 to Delhi from Montreal was blown up mid-air by a bomb planted by Vancouver-based Khalistani radicals to avenge the Indian army's action at the Golden Temple in June 1984.

The Canadian government announced the $24,000 ex-gratia during a meeting with families - as recommended by the Air India inquiry commission, headed by former Canadian chief justice John Major, which submitted its report last year.

A government spokesman said since most victims' families were compensated in the early 1990s, the $24,000 ex-gratia is just 'a demonstration of solicitude and recognition for the administrative disdain families experienced over the years following the tragedy'.

But the offer - which amounts to $7.9 million in total - enraged victim families who called it insulting to the memory of their loved ones.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - The Netherlands is liable for the deaths of three Bosnian Muslim men slain by Serbs during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, a Dutch appeals court ruled in a civil suit Tuesday. The judges ordered the Dutch government to compensate the men's relatives.

The ruling could open the door to other compensation claims by victims who say their male relatives should have been protected by the Dutch U.N. peacekeepers in charge of the U.N. "safe zone" near Srebrenica during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.


It could also have wider implications for countries sending troops on U.N. peacekeeping missions, since it opens the possibility of national governments being taken to court for the actions of their troops - even when they are under U.N. control.

Congress leaders and lawyers of 2002 post-Godhra riots victims on Thursday slammed the Gujarat government for destroying vital State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) records pertaining to the clashes, calling the action a “criminal conspiracy.”

Alleging there was an attempt to ‘hide’ the truth regarding the alleged involvement of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleagues, they demanded an independent inquiry under the supervision of the Supreme Court into the BJP government’s action.

“This is nothing short of a criminal conspiracy to see that the truth does not emerge. It clearly points out that the State government is trying to cover up the entire matter,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari said in New Delhi.

UN refugee agency criticises deportation of the Libyan woman who claimed she was raped by Gaddafi's troops in March.

A Libyan woman who said she was raped by Muammar Gaddafi's troops has been deported from Qatar where she sought refuge, and is now in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, a UN official has said.

Iman Al-Obeidi flew via Qatari military jet to the opposition-held city of Benghazi, where she is now staying in a hotel, Vincent Cochetel, the UNHCR representative in Washington, told the AFP news agency on Friday.

Jalal el-Gallal, an opposition spokesman, told the Associated Press news agency that al-Obeidi was welcome to stay.

"This is her country," el-Gallal said.

The UN refugee agency said Obeidi had refugee status and should have been allowed to stay in Qatar. It said her deportation runs contrary to international law.

Obeidi "is a recognised refugee, and we don't consider there is any good reason for her deportation," agency spokeswoman Sybella Wilkes told the AP.
