New Delhi:  Politician Amar Singh has been formally chargesheeted under the Prevention of Corruption Act for offering bribes to three BJP MPs in 2008. A crore was reportedly given in cash to the MPs for supporting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a trust vote in July that year.

Sudheendru Kulkarni, who was then an advisor to senior BJP leader LK Advani, had allegedly planned the entire operation to expose the willingness of the UPA to buy votes.  He will face criminal charges that include inducement.

The trio of BJP MPs - Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora - had marched into the Lok Sabha waving bundles of cash hours before the trust vote began.  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh survived the no-confidence motion.

Coming out in support of his estranged colleague Amar Singh, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday termed his questioning by Delhi Police in the ‘cash-for-vote’ scam as “injustice” and said he would help the Rajya Sabha MP to “sail through” the crisis.

However, the SP chief ruled out Amar Singh’s return to the party, from which he was expelled last year.

“It is an injustice being meted out to Amar Singh. It is a conspiracy to trouble (SP Lok Sabha MP) Rewati Raman Singh and Amar Singh. He (Amar) helped Congress (during the 2008 trust vote) as Samajwadi Party voted in favour of the UPA. And now he is being questioned,” Mr. Yadav told a press conference here.

He said Amar Singh was not involved in bribing of BJP MPs.

“We only helped by voting in their (Congress’) favour. Did we join the government? Did Amar Singh or Rewati Singh become ministers? Had money changed hands, I would have known about it,” a visibly upset Mr. Yadav said.

After grilling Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh on Friday over the alleged bribery of three lawmakers during the 2008 trust vote, Delhi Police asked Samajwadi Party MP Reoti Raman Singh to appear for questioning on Saturday.

Amar Singh, who was questioned at the office of the inter-state cell of Crime Branch in New Delhi's Chanakyapuri for nearly four hours, refused to speak to waiting reporters before and after the questioning.

Amar Singh was confronted with Sanjeev Saxena, a former private secretary to Amar Singh, and Suhail Hindustani, a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha, who are already in police custody for their alleged role in the scam.

Both Saxena and Hindustani named Amar Singh in the alleged horse trading, officials said.

While being taken to the court with Saxena, Hindustani told reporters: "The government is trying to trap me in this (cash-for-vote scam) case."

The court sent them to 14 days in judicial custody.

Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh was on Friday questioned by the Delhi Police in connection with the 2008 ‘cash-for-vote’ scam.

The former Samajwadi Party leader was grilled for three-and-a-half hours at the Crime Branch office after two accused, Sanjeev Saxena and Suhail Hindustani, named him, police sources said.

The sources said he denied involvement in the scam.

Mr. Singh, who is accused of sending bribe money to win over three Bharatiya Janata Party MPs during the 2008 confidence motion, did not speak to the media.

Police did not rule out the possibility of Mr. Singh being questioned again and it could take place after a status report is filed in the Supreme court next Friday.

BJP MP Ashok Argal, who was allegedly sought to be bribed, is expected to be questioned on Monday.

Mr. Singh’s appearance before the police comes after the Delhi Police issued summons to him under Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code, asking him to present himself before the Crime branch.

New Delhi:  Politician Amar Singh will be interrogated tomorrow at 11 am by the Delhi Police about his alleged role in the cash-for-votes scam. The BJP alleges that three of its MPs were offered a crore to vote for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a trust vote in July 2008.

At the time, Mr Singh was a senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, an ally of the UPA coalition at the Centre. The police will investigate allegations that he provided the money offered to the BJP MPs - Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora. On July 22, 2008, hours before the trust vote process began, they marched into Lok Sabha waving bundles of cash. The Prime Minister survived the vote. A parliamentary committee was set up to study the BJP's allegations and it asked the Delhi Police to investigate the matter. (Read: Police evidence against Amar Singh)

Two men have been arrested since Sunday. Sanjeev Saxena describes himself as a former aide of Amar Singh. Hidden cameras provided by a TV channel reportedly show Mr Saxena offering money to the BJP MPs. The TV channel was brought on board to conduct the sting by Sudheendra Kulkarni, who was then advisor to BJP leader LK Advani. He will also be questioned about his role by the police.

Delhi Police today made the second arrest in the 2008 'cash-for-votes' scam by taking into custody Suhail Hindustani, who had allegedly acted as a liaison between Amar Singh and BJP MPs sought to be bribed.

Hindustani was arrested after seven hours of questioning by the Crime Branch and charges under Prevention of Corruption Act were pressed against him, police sources said.

Police summoned Hindustani for questioning after it arrested Sanjeev Saxena, once considered close to Singh, for allegedly delivering cash to three BJP MPs.

Police are also expected to question Amar Singh, former Samajwadi Party leader. Delhi Police had sought views of Union Home Ministry on questioning Singh.

BJP MP Ashok Argal, who is alleged to have been offered Rs one crore bribe, and BJP leader L.K. Advani's former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni who had allegedly organised the sting operation, may also be questioned, police sources said.

Suhail Hindustani, alleged to have acted as a liaison between Amar Singh and BJP MPs who were bribed during the 2008 trust vote, today appeared before Delhi Police for questioning and alleged that the former SP leader was behind the operation to buy lawmakers.

Hindustani arrived at the Crime Branch office in Chanakyapuri this morning along with some supporters who garlanded him. He was carrying a bouquet which he claimed was for a senior police official quizzing him to express his "profound" gratitude to the force for going ahead with the probe.

Before entering the police complex, Hindustani told reporters that he would tell police whatever he had told the Parliamentary Committee which probed the infamous cash-for-vote scam.

Hindustani, who claimed that he was earlier a BJP youth wing Yuva Morcha member, alleged that the operation was done by Amar Singh and some Congress leaders. He said police should examine his call records, which he claimed would throw light on who all called him between July nine and 22 of 2008.

He alleged that Singh and some Congress leaders were in constant touch with him.

"I will tell all these things to the police. They had approached me to get MPs from the BJP to save the government. They offered me posts like Chairmanship (in some corporations)," he alleged.

Hindustani's appearance before investigators came as police issued a notice to him asking him to join the probe after arresting Sanjeev Saxena, once considered close to Singh, for allegedly delivering cash to three BJP MPs.

New Delhi:  The Rajya Sabha has allowed Delhi Police to interrogate politician Amar Singh in the cash-for-votes scandal. 

Because Singh is a Rajya Sabha MP, the Delhi Police had yesterday written to the Chairman of the House, Vice President Hamid Ansari, to sanction permission for his questioning.  

Singh's former aide, Sanjeev Saxena, has told the police that the politician provided the one crore that was intended to buy the support of three BJP MPs in a trust vote in 2008. 

Saxena was arrested over the weekend. Singh has denied knowing him well but in court on Monday, the police said that Singh had introduced Saxena as his secretary to BJP MPs.  

Saxena was allegedly caught on camera offering one crore if the MPs agreed to vote in favour of the UPA during a no-confidence vote moved against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh  in July 2008.  Singh was then a senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, which was an ally of the UPA.

New Delhi: Delhi Police has sought permission from the home ministry to quiz former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in the cash-for-votes scam, according to media reports quoting sources. The Delhi Police will need speaker's permission to question Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh. Earlier on Monday, Delhi Police told a city court that it was former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh who introduced Sanjeev Saxena as his secretary to allegedly bribe three BJP members of Parliament a day before the July 22, 2008 trust vote.

The development, which has already created a flutter in political circles, came two days after the Delhi Police crime branch arrested Saxena for his role in the cash-for-vote scam.

The allegation also brings Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP, at the centre of the scam that rocked Parliament during the confidence motion moved by the Manmohan Singh government of UPA-1 after the Left parties withdrew support in the wake of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Union Panchayati Raj Minister Kishore Chandra Deo, who headed the parliamentary panel to probe the 2008 cash-for-votes scam, on Tuesday said former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was not been called for questioning as there was no prima facie evidence against him.

Deo, who assumed charge of the panchayati raj ministry on Tuesday, told journalists that Delhi Police were conducting further investigations according to recommendations of the committee. The parliamentary panel looked into allegations that bribes were paid to win the 2008 parliamentary trust vote.

"My stand is vindicated," Deo said.

Responding to a question, he said there was no malafide on the part of the government and Delhi Police in delaying the probe.

The Supreme Court on Friday slammed the Delhi Police for an 'inefficient and directionless' probe into the cash-for-vote episode, which cast a shadow on the Manmohan Singh government's trust vote win in 2008.

Another MP on Tuesday (July 19) implicated Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in the cash for votes scam.

Speaking to TIMES NOW today, Former BJP MP Ashok Argal said, "I have no problem if i am questioned by Delhi police in the cash for vote case. Even if I have to go to jail, I shall happily go in the pursuit of truth. In fact no police officer ever came to investigate this case in the last 3 years."

When asked whether Sanjeev Saxena, who was once considered close to Amar Singh knew the SP leader Argal said, "Sanjeev Saxena and Amar Singh are known to each other. I met both of them at Amar Singh's residence. Sanjeev Saxena has also said that the amount given to us was brought from Amar Singh's residence. Call records show they are related. It will all be clear in investigations."

Argal added, "I am not a beneficiary of this cash for vote scam. I just spoke the truth. And I am not afraid."

Meanwhile, former BJP MP Mahavir Bhagora has claimed that Sanjiv Saxena tried to bribe him during the cash for votes scandal adding to Amar Singh's troubles.

New Delhi: Slammed by Supreme Court for a shoddy probe in the cash-for-vote scam, Delhi Police on Sunday made its first arrest in the case picking up Sanjeev Saxena, believed to be an aide of Amar Singh, for allegedly trying to bribe BJP MPs ahead of UPA government's trust vote in 2008.

A senior police official said the investigators would also question expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and a few others in the coming days. Police sources said Saxena was arrested on Sunday afternoon following his questioning in connection with the probe into the incident which came to light on July 22, 2008 when BJP MPs displayed wads of notes in Lok Sabha alleging that the money had been offered as bribe to them.

HC asks ED to probe money laundering charges against Amar!

The Allahabad High Court today directed the Enforcement Directorate to investigate charges of money laundering against Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, saying that the probe should commence within two weeks. The court gave the direction while dismissing a petition filed by the former Samajwadi Party general secretary who had challenged an FIR lodged in Kanpur nearly two years ago accusing him of various financial irregularities when the party was in power in Uttar Pradesh.


Every Corrupt Politician should be probed for money laundering, black money and tax evasion.
