New Delhi: Coming down hard on Mayawati for the Uttar Pradesh police's high-handedness towards IBN7 journalist Shalabh Mani Tripathi, Uttar Pradesh state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said that the state government is turning fascist.

"I think it is the most detestable act of the UP govt because if they are trying to assault the fourth estate - the journalists and the media which is responsible for showcasing the sentiments of the people then it is the last straw in scuttling democracy in the country. Mayawati in all her acts is successively proving that she doesn't believe in democracy and is heading towards a fascist regime," she said.

IBN7 Managing Editor Ashutosh also slammed the attack on colleague Shalabh Tripathi, calling it a sad day for Indian journalism.

Detaining him, illegally at 11 PM, without giving any reason for arrest, manhandling and releasing him only when 60 odd journalists of Lucknow took a rally to the CMs Office, via the Police Station, concerned, smacks of the "vengeance attacks" of the police against the relentless exposure of the series of murders of the Sr. Medical Officers (mysteriously) and the rampant Rapes that have been happening quite frequently, in UP!

Mayawathi, indeed, is running a 'fascist' regime by invoking that the opposition parties in the state are against her because she belongs to a particular caste!!

Instead of acting like a dictator, she better bring 'law & order' situation and the rampant crimes against the innocent girls and the journalists!!!

A person was arrested yesterday by a team of West Bengal police for allegedly confining a woman for about a year and repeatedly raping her during the period.

Krishan Lal was taken into custody by the WB police team, in cooperation with Sadar police station here, on the basis of a complaint filed by the woman's family member at Nadia police station in West Bengal, police said.

The victim, who was recovered from his residence, has supported the allegations, they said.

His lawyer claims the victim was married to the culprit; what an ignoramus (lawyer): even raping wife is a crime! God save the accused from the likes of this kind of lawyers!

• A 17-year-old Indian-American youth was handcuffed and arrested by police when he went to the rescue of his mother who was harassed and spit on her face by a Chinese national in Flushing area of Queens.
  This is the second incident of an Indian youth being arrested in Flushing after the detention of Krittika Biswas, 18, daughter of Debashish Biswas, vice consul of Indian Consulate, following a complaint from her school teachers that she had sent a hate e-mail which was actually sent by another student.
  The fresh incident took place on Saturday when a Chinese pedestrian stood in front of the car of the woman who was driving on Kissena Boulevard-Beach Avenue intersection and refused to move even after green flashed on the traffic signal, according to Sushma Thukral, owner of Asian Foods in Cherry Avenue in Flushing, a pre-dominant Chinese neighborhood.

From Kashmir: Police Detains Rights Activist at Srinagar Airport!

Srinagar, May 28 -Noted human rights activist and writer, Gautam Navlakha was detained at the Srinagar Airport by the police on Saturday.

Navlakha, convenor of the International Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir (IPTK) and editorial consultant of the Economic and Political Weekly, was stopped along with a friend Sehba Hussain at Srinagar airport when they arrived from Delhi around 1:50 pm and were not allowed to move out by the police citing law and order problem.

Navlakha is a known critic of government policies in Kashmir has been involved in many human rights initiatives, like the case of unmarked graves in Kashmir.

Officials invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure against him. “Mr. Navlakha is being detained and taken to an undisclosed location until May 30, when he will be allowed to return home” a statement issued by the IPTK said.


This Rights activist has freedom-of-speech curtailed!  Kashimiri Administration could be a bit tolerant to the counter-views, if they wish to exist in a democracy!

Indian Consul General in New York has said the US State Department is wrong in its reading of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and asserted that diplomatic immunity is extended to family members of consular officers.

• Prabhu Dayal was speaking in the backdrop of the controversy raging about whether Krittika Biswas, the daughter of the Vice Counsel General in New York, had diplomatic immunity that protected her against arrest.
  "The rulebook is here," Dayal told the media. "They should not have arrested her."
  The row between India and US on her diplomatic immunity is sidelining the actual crime of NYPD of arresting her, handcuffing a girl in the full view of her school mates, detaining her over 24 hours, illegally, without even informing her parents - all on mere suspicion and a complaint of math teacher, who later when apologized by that Chinese student, who actually committed the crime has not been complained against.
  All this speaks volumes of the selective application of 'rule-of-law' by both the School Administration and NYPD, demonstrating, amply, a clear bias against an Indian Girl Vis-a-Vis a Chinese Boy.

The US government has joined issue with an Indian diplomat's daughter who is suing New York city for a whopping $1.5 million for false arrest, saying family members don't enjoy diplomatic immunity.

Krittika Biswas, an 18-year-old student of John Bowne High School and daughter of Debashish Biswas, vice consul (administration) at the Indian Consulate General in New York, filed a notice of claim May 6.

She said her claims of diplomatic immunity were ignored when she was handcuffed and locked up for more than 24 hours Feb 8 after a shoddy probe by administrators into alleged obscene emails sent to two teachers in her school.

It may be so, but detention of a School going kid, without notifying the parents, for over 24 hours, hand-cuffing, denying to allow to go to toilet and all smack of racial prejudice - both on the part of the School as well as the NYPD.  

Another million dollar question is, why that Chinese kid whom they found to be the culprit of sending out hate-mail to the teacher not been disciplined?
