Srinagar, May 28 -Noted human rights activist and writer, Gautam Navlakha was detained at the Srinagar Airport by the police on Saturday.
Navlakha, convenor of the International Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir (IPTK) and editorial consultant of the Economic and Political Weekly, was stopped along with a friend Sehba Hussain at Srinagar airport when they arrived from Delhi around 1:50 pm and were not allowed to move out by the police citing law and order problem.
Navlakha is a known critic of government policies in Kashmir has been involved in many human rights initiatives, like the case of unmarked graves in Kashmir.
Officials invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure against him. “Mr. Navlakha is being detained and taken to an undisclosed location until May 30, when he will be allowed to return home” a statement issued by the IPTK said.
This Rights activist has freedom-of-speech curtailed! Kashimiri Administration could be a bit tolerant to the counter-views, if they wish to exist in a democracy!
