Melbourne: Singapore Airlines has been accused of serving chicken to a vegetarian Hindu woman who was travelling from New Zealand to India. According to New Zealand media reports on Wednesday, 56-year-old Pushplata Sharma claimed of falling sick after she was served chicken on a flight to India.

Sharma of Blenheim, New Zealand, has been a vegetarian throughout her life as part of her religion and never ate meat or eggs.

A Singapore Airlines spokesman said the airline was concerned that Sharma was served the wrong food, but the booking made by the travel agent did not ask for a special meal.

It was said that Sharma booked her tickets through a travel agent and requested an Indian vegetarian meal. However, after a mixup between the agent and the airline, the request was forgotten that led to serving of the wrong meal to her.

Sharma further mentioned that when she was given the meal, she thought the chicken was cheese. She realised the mistake only after she had eaten some and was immediately sick.

S&P's rating downgrade wrong decision: US official!

WASHINGTON: Global rating agency Standard and Poor's (S&P) made a hasty and wrong decision of stripping the US of its top-notch credit rating, a senior US Treasury official said.

S&P Friday removed for the first time the AAA long-term sovereign credit rating for the US and lowered it by one notch to AA-plus.

"Their analysis is poorly and hastily done. By moving so quickly, they made the wrong decision without the right information," the official told Xinhua over the phone Saturday.

The rating agency should pay more attention to the debt reduction efforts in Washington, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official believed that the downgrade won't have a big impact on global financial markets as the other two global rating giants Fitch and Moody's retained their triple-A credit rating for the US.

Market investors know the ropes of the US debt reduction process and the just-signed bipartisan debt legislation, and "there is nothing new in S&P's downgrading report, except for their downgrade decision", said the official.

Obama Tuesday signed a bill that raises the nation's debt limit through 2013 and cuts the deficit by more than $2 trillion, but the deficit-cutting package fell far short of the $4 trillion cited by S&P to avoid a downgrade.

The CAG report on the Commonwealth Games, expected to be tabled in Parliament on Friday, terms as “flawed” the broadcasting services contract for CWG awarded by Prasar Bharati to SIS Live.

It charged PB with favouring SIS Live at all stages. “Although Doordarshan was indicated as the host broadcaster in the May 2003 bid, it was formally notified by the CWG Organising Committee only in March 2007, and the host broadcaster agreement between the OC and PB was signed in May 2009,” it said. The CAG said the award of the broadcasting services contract by PB to SIS Live was flawed on several counts. “Only one bidder, SIS Live, was qualified on technical grounds, and the contract was awarded on a single financial bid, without any competition,” it said. These matters are currently being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and FEMA. The CAG says that “contrary to the intent of the contract with PB, SIS Live went ahead and outsourced almost the entire contract on the same day to Zoom Communications, which would have been ineligible for bidding.” While PB’s contract with SIS Live was for `246 crore, the sub-contracts between SIS Live and Zoom were for only `177.30 crore, which would also factor in Zoom’s profit margin. Clearly, there was a substantial loss to PB and the government,” it said.

Indian Consul General in New York has said the US State Department is wrong in its reading of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and asserted that diplomatic immunity is extended to family members of consular officers.

• Prabhu Dayal was speaking in the backdrop of the controversy raging about whether Krittika Biswas, the daughter of the Vice Counsel General in New York, had diplomatic immunity that protected her against arrest.
  "The rulebook is here," Dayal told the media. "They should not have arrested her."
  The row between India and US on her diplomatic immunity is sidelining the actual crime of NYPD of arresting her, handcuffing a girl in the full view of her school mates, detaining her over 24 hours, illegally, without even informing her parents - all on mere suspicion and a complaint of math teacher, who later when apologized by that Chinese student, who actually committed the crime has not been complained against.
  All this speaks volumes of the selective application of 'rule-of-law' by both the School Administration and NYPD, demonstrating, amply, a clear bias against an Indian Girl Vis-a-Vis a Chinese Boy.

The US government has joined issue with an Indian diplomat's daughter who is suing New York city for a whopping $1.5 million for false arrest, saying family members don't enjoy diplomatic immunity.

Krittika Biswas, an 18-year-old student of John Bowne High School and daughter of Debashish Biswas, vice consul (administration) at the Indian Consulate General in New York, filed a notice of claim May 6.

She said her claims of diplomatic immunity were ignored when she was handcuffed and locked up for more than 24 hours Feb 8 after a shoddy probe by administrators into alleged obscene emails sent to two teachers in her school.

It may be so, but detention of a School going kid, without notifying the parents, for over 24 hours, hand-cuffing, denying to allow to go to toilet and all smack of racial prejudice - both on the part of the School as well as the NYPD.  

Another million dollar question is, why that Chinese kid whom they found to be the culprit of sending out hate-mail to the teacher not been disciplined?
