Puri said he should have used appropriate language for his description of the political class.

New Delhi: Swami Agnivesh, a close associate of Anna Hazare, was the target of the core Team Anna which attacked him over a controversial video posted on YouTube where he is purportedly telling a person alleged to be a Union Minister that the government should act tough with the fasting Gandhian.

Agnivesh on his part claimed the video footage was 'doctored and concocted' and part of a smear campaign against him and denied he was talking to Union Minister Kapil Sibal. The minister was involved in negotiations during the initial stages of the stand-off between Team Anna and the Government.

Team Anna member Kiran Bedi alleged that Agnivesh has been caught on camera where is asking a person after addressing him as 'Kapil', "Maharaj, why are you giving them so much?'.

"Who's Maharaj? whether it is Kapil Sibal on the other side. He said Sibal sahab, I heard that," she said.

Bedi accused Agnivesh of being absolutely unethical. The core Anna Team and Agnivesh had developed differences during the course of Hazare's fast.

Bedi told PTI that the footage has "shocked us all and we are very uncomfortable" with it.

"Only he can answer this. He should own it or reject. However it leaves no doubt. It obviously tell us what happened. He should tell us who is the person whom he mentioned in this," she added.

Washington:  The US today said it supports freedom of peaceful expression and non-violent protest everywhere in the world, but blamed "inaccurate reporting" in India for creating an impression that Washington had issued a strong statement on anti-graft protests there.

US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland refuted reports that the US had given any statement in direct support of Anna Hazare's movement, that had prompted a strong reaction by India.

Yesterday, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said, "US never supported any movement in India since its independence. For the first time, the US said that Anna Hazare's movement should be allowed and there should be no obstruction to it. What was the need for the US to give this statement?

"It needs to be considered whether there is any power which is supporting this movement which wants to destabilize not only the government but the country. We need to take the statement of the US seriously."

"There was some extremely inaccurate reporting out of India yesterday or today that the United States had issued some sort of strong statement, which we did not issue. The only statement about India yesterday to my knowledge was the one that we made from the podium here," State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, told reporters at her daily news conference.

Staff Reporter / The Hindu / MUMBAI, July 28, 2011.

If a movie takes an anti-reservation stand, it is likely to fuel anti-quota propaganda: Bhujbal.
Even before its release, opinion on the Bollywood movie ‘Aarakshan' (Reservation) is gathering steam with political leaders warning of protests if the film's stand is found to be in conflict with the Constitutional provisions.
On Wednesday, Chhagan Bhujbal, Maharashtra Public Works Department Minister and a prominent Other Backward Classes leader from the Nationalist Congress Party, called for a clarification from the makers of ‘Aarakshan', directed by Prakash Jha.
“The provision for reservation is enshrined in the Constitution. The policy has the sanction of the country's Parliament, be it for the Dalits, adivasis, OBCs or women. Political parties are in favour of quotas. Various sections have waged protracted battles to secure reservation. In this context, if a movie takes an anti-reservation stand, it is likely to fuel anti-quota propaganda, and protests are bound to take place across the country,” Mr. Bhujbal told journalists here.
Mr. Bhujbal, who heads the All-India Mahatma Phule Samata Parishad, said his organisation would protest peacefully by staging a satyagraha if the movie argued against reservation.
Voices of opposition have already emerged from Jharkhand and other States. Pro-reservationists, including leaders such as Lalu Prasad, Sharad Yadav, Mayawati, Gopinath Munde of the Bharatiya Janata Party and leaders from the south are bound to come together to oppose the film, Mr. Bhujbal said.

Janata Party leader and Harvard summer school teacher Subramanian Swamy is being asked to leave by students at the university who have expressed anger over an article written by him following the recent Mumbai blasts, the Wall Street Journal has reported
A petition signed by over 200 students and faculty members, accuses Swamy of being a 'bigoted promoter of communalism in India' and wants his association with the University terminated immediately.
Writing for the DNA newspaper, Swamy had stated: "Muslims of India are being programmed by a slow reactive process to become radical and thus slide into suicide against Hindus.” He also suggests that only Muslims in India who 'acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus' should be allowed to vote.
About Kashmir, Swamy wrote the 'Valley be settled with ex-servicemen to demonstrate a sort of civilian shock-and-awe campaign that would establish it as Hindu and Indian once and for all'.
The petition at Harvard, meanwhile, is drawing attention the fact that a follower of such 'views' cannot find place in the university.
“The highly insulting and stereotypical nature of his comments suggest that he cannot be trusted to regard Muslims — and no doubt other groups–with anything but a jaundiced eye,” it said.
The petition went on: "While free expression and the vigorous contest of ideas are essential in any academic community, so, too, are respect and tolerance for human difference. By advocating measures that would grossly violate freedom of religion and the unqualified right to vote for different religious groups, and by aggressively vilifying an entire religious community, Swamy breaches the most basic standards of respect and tolerance."

New Delhi:  The Defence Ministry has today ruled against General VK Singh, who heads the Indian Army, on the matter of when he was born. He will retire, as planned, in May 2012.

Different records within the army show  May 10, 1950 and May 10, 1951  as the General's date of birth.

The Army Chief has maintained that he was born in 1951, though one official record showed otherwise. Defence Minister AK Antony has opted to go with that record in the Military Secretary's branch.
