Mumbai:  Mukesh Parmar (52), a transport company employee from Kandivli, escaped death by a whisker at Zaveri Bazaar last evening. He said he had walked past the blast site barely 30 seconds before the explosion took place.

"I have to be in the Zaveri Bazaar almost five days a week because of my work. I was at Crawford Market around 6.15 pm and had entered Zaveri Bazaar through Khau Galli 15 minutes later. 

The street was crowded as usual and I must have walked barely a few yards from what was to be the blast site when I heard an earth-shattering noise," said Parmar.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday registered three cases in connection with the serial bombings that left several people dead and more than 100 injured.

“ATS has taken over the probe. Close to 12 joint teams of ATS and Crime Branch have been formed and we are being closely assisted by Central agencies. This case is being taken up on priority,” ATS chief Rakesh Maria told reporters in Mumbai.

Assuring people that no effort would be spared to bring the perpetrators of the latest terror strike to justice, he said, “We request the public to have faith and trust in the police. So far no (terror) case has gone undetected and the persons responsible for the blasts will be brought to book. We will get you the accused.”

The maximum casualty in Wednesday evening’s terror attack was witnessed at Opera House where 10 people were killed. Seven persons died at the explosion at Zaveri Bazaar, the police officer said.

The third blast took place in Dadar.

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, who was to receive an honour from the French government here on Wednesday, requested officials to postpone the ceremony in the wake of the Mumbai blasts. The actress also maintained a minute's silence to mourn the deaths.

"Thank you all for being here. The current situation has really disturbed and shocked all of us. I thank the French embassy for being supportive and considering the sensitivity of the situation. They have been kind to consider me and my family's request to postpone the celebration till another time. We as Indians can't go ahead and celebrate in such a situation," Aishwarya told reporters at the event.

Mumbai was hit by three blasts that left at least 20 people dead and over 100 injured on Wednesday evening.

The event for honouring Aishwarya with 'Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters' was being held in New Delhi.

"The terrible blasts have shook us, but we shall stand strong. They (terrorists) should get it straight that we won't let them succeed. You cannot break us, we all believe in deep strong Indian spirit. You will not get the better of us. God bless us and Jai Hind," added Aishwarya, who was accompanied by her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan.

Indian intelligence agencies received no warnings before the three bomb blasts that killed 18 people in Mumbai, the biggest attack since Pakistani-based militants rampaged through the financial hub in 2008, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said on Thursday.

Suspicion however fell on the Indian Mujahideen, a shadowy home-grown militant group known for its city-to-city bombing campaigns using small explosive devices planted in restaurants, at bus stops and on busy streets.

"There was no intelligence regarding a militant attack in Mumbai. That is not a failure of intelligence agencies," Chidambaram told a news conference today.

"Know that perpetrators have attacked and have worked in a very very clandestine manner. Maybe it's a very small group, maybe they did not communicate with each other."

He also said it was too early to point the finger at a particular group, but said the 'coordinated terror attacks' could be in retaliation to a number of plots recently stopped by police or the arrests, including from the Indian Mujahideen.

Alleging that terror attacks in India were a proxy war waged by Pakistan, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L. K. Advani on Thursday said the Indian government must shed its ambivalence and adopt zero tolerance approach towards terrorism.

“Indian government must shed its ambivalence towards terrorism. It should declare that its policy against terrorism will be of zero tolerance. It must be categorical that there will be no tolerance towards terrorism after yesterday’s attacks,” Mr. Advani told reporters.

Maintaining that no purpose would be served by engaging in a dialogue with Pakistan until the terror infrastructure was dismantled, the former deputy prime minister said the terror strikes were “not failure of intelligence but failure of policy“.

He deplored that Mumbai has become the favourite target of terrorists, whether from within or from the neighbouring country.

“Pakistanis have claimed that whatever was happening in Kashmir was not terrorism but freedom struggle. Pakistan has been trying for years to show to the world that Kashmir is a disputed territory,” he said.

The ammonium nitrate-based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in the Mumbai blasts were 'not crude' and indicated that they were prepared with 'some level of sophistication', union Home Secretary R.K. Singh said here on Thursday.

"Preliminary investigations indicate the use of IEDs with ammonium nitrate-based explosives (in the Mumbai blasts). The IEDs are not crude. They indicate some level of sophistication," Singh told reporters here, a day after triple blasts in Mumbai Wednesday evening killed 17 people and injured 131.

The union home ministry has been updating the media regularly about the latest on the terror attack.

Terror struck Mumbai when three serial blasts rocked crowded areas in Zaveri Bazar, Dadar and the Opera House on Wednesday evening. According to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, at least 21 people were killed and 131 others injured in the serial blasts.

In New Delhi, the Union Home Ministry said the multiple explosions were a terror strike and that Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were used. Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh said two people were killed and about 100 injured in three explosions.

Police said the nature and intensity of the explosions were not known but the blasts revived memories of the terror attack in November 2008 in which 166 persons were killed by 10 gunmen of Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT.

Police said all the three blasts took place in a crowded markets and busy areas.

The first explosion took place in south Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, near famous Mumbadevi temple, this evening in which some people were injured, said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli. The bustling market also has a number of jewellery shops.
