State of the Nation Poll: Rahul Gandhi emerges as the most popular political leader and the preferred choice as the next Prime Minister

Though publicly the Telangana Congress Steering Committee meeting held here on Saturday has decided to continue its boycott of Parliament and ministerial duties, there seems to be differences among the leaders, and it is believed that some of the MPs will attend Parliament from Monday.

One of the chairmen of the Steering Committee, the MP, Dr K. Kesava Rao, surprised newsmen when he said that he will attend the Rajya Sabha on the day a discussion on the Telangana issue will be held, to “tear into pieces” the government’s inaction in resolving the state bifurcation issue.

“I believe the CPI member, Mr Aziz Pasha, gave a notice for discussion. I will participate in the discussion,” Mr Kesava Rao said.

However, he added that MPs will not take back their resignations or attend the session.

Taking exception to the comments of Union Minister and AICC leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on the separate State demand, Congress leaders from Telangana on Monday said they had decided not to accept his invitation to come to Delhi for talks.

“Telangana people are hurt by Azad’s comments that consensus and Assembly resolution are needed for the formation of a separate State,” Congress MP G. Sukhender Reddy told reporters in Hyderabad.

“His remarks that the process should be started from the scratch even after the Sri Krishna Committee submitted its report are objectionable. We are not ready to accept his invitation to come to Delhi, until he withdraws his comments,” Mr. Reddy said after a meeting of Telangana Congress leaders from the district and mandal level held in Hyderabad on Monday.

With senior RJD leaders quitting the party, its supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav failing to get a central ministerial berth, and discontent among its leaders and supporters on a new high over Mr Yadav naming the RJD’s Delhi headquarters after wife Rabri Devi, the once mighty regional party may be hastily on the wane.

The question most discussed in Bihar’s main Opposition party these days is whether the apparent lack of political instincts shown by the party boss is a transitory phase. By his long absence from Patna and failure to attend several important RJD functions here in recent months, Mr Yadav has not only disheartened his confidantes but also fuelled speculation about the future of his and his family’s grasp on the party. In neighbouring Jharkhand, the RJD is already considered terminally moribund.

The RJD’s avalanche of current crises originated from Mr Yadav’s continuing aloofness from the affairs in his home turf. After contributing to the party’s senior leaders in Bihar and Jharkhand quitting this month, the impacts of this aloofness gained momentum after Mr Yadav named the RJD’s headquarters on Rouse Avenue in Delhi as “Rabri Bhavan” in an apparent disregard for Bihar’s socialist icons the party relentlessly swears by.

Caught literally between the devil and the deep sea, Congress legislators from Telangana are now desperately searching for an 'escape route' from their misadventure against the high command.

On one hand the Telangana Congress leaders have become the subject of ridicule to their own party colleagues from Andhra-Rayalaseema regions and, on the other, they are under immense pressure from the high command to fall in line and put an end to the ongoing drama over the statehood demand.

Also, with their proposed 48-hour hunger-strike ending in just about 33 hours without any impact, the Telangana Congress leaders are all at sea.

At least the ministers and the MLAs, who put in their papers on July 4 along with the MPs and the MLCs demanding creation of Telangana state, are said to be keen on withdrawing their resignations but are unable to do so fearing wrath of the people, sources said.

The ministers and the MLAs, who have been holding talks with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana in turns, have explained their predicament and pleaded with the two leaders to get at least a statement issued by the high command in favour of Telangana.

Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba suffered a major setback as security personnel shot down five of its top terrorists, including three self-styled divisional commanders, during an encounter in the border district of Kupwara on Friday.

The five LeT militants were killed after a day-long encounter which ended Friday night after a massive explosion rocked a house at a village Maidanpora in Lolab area of the district, a police spokesman said.

The militants have been identified as Saqib alias Sohail, LeT’s divisional commander for North Kashmir, Hamad alias Haneef, divisional commander for Kupwara and Qari Saifullah, divisional commander for Central Kashmir, he said.

The militants were killed in the encounter which began early Friday. Charred bodies of the ultras were recovered from the debris of the house where they were hiding at the village. Five AK-47 rifles have also been recovered from the scene of the encounter.

The other two militants killed in the encounter are Chotta Saad, battalion commander of LeT and Umair alias Hafiz, the spokesman said.

Hyderabad:  After their bulk resignations in support of a separate state, Telangana Congress leaders will begin a two-day hunger strike tomorrow.

"We have decided to observe a 48-hour fast on July 13 and 14 to draw the attention of the government," Congress MP K Keshav Rao told reporters after a meeting of the Congress MPs, MLAs and MLCs who had recently quit their posts.

All those who have resigned from their posts would take part in the fast, he said.

As many as 100 MLAs and 15 MPs cutting across party lines have quit their posts this month in support of the separate statehood demand. 

Mr Rao dismissed reports that Telangana leaders from the Congress will leave the party over the Centre's lack of action on a new state.

• Faced with the looming crisis in Andhra Pradesh in the wake of en masse resignations by its legislators, Congress on Tuesday intensified efforts to mollify them with senior leader Pranab meeting a delegation of lawmakers pressing for a separate Telangana.
  The delegation comprising three Ministers, few MPs, an MLA and an MLC, met Mukherjee at his residence and the discussions continued till late in the night. This is the second meeting of the delegation with senior Congress leaders on Tuesday.
  They had one round of discussion with Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, also party in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, and explained as to why they resigned from their positions. The leaders are also expected to meet Ahmed Patel, Political Advisor to the Congress President.
  The meetings are part of the Congress' strategy to engage with the lawmakers, who have put in their papers, and explain to them the position of the party and the Centre on the issue.
  The lawmakers are believed to have told Mukherjee that they are ready for discussions with the High Command on the Telangana statehood issue. They are understood to have told them that the resignations were basically to convey the sentiments of the people of Telangana to the Centre.

IT giant Infosys and salt-to-software conglomerate Tata have emerged as the Top 2 brands in India, beating global majors like Google, Nokia and Facebook, in a new index.

According to TLG's Index of emerging market 'Thought Leaders', seven out of the top ten brands in India were indigenous firms. TLG, in partnership with international research consultancy firm GlobeScan, launched the index wherein government ministers, directors of blue chip companies and newspaper editors were asked to identify corporate brands with the power to change the attitudes and behaviour of consumers, employees or politicians -- defined as "Thought Leaders".

The list of top 20 firms was peppered with Indian brands including Larsen & Toubro (5th), State Bank of India (7th), Life Insurance Corporation of India (12th), Bharti Airtel (13th), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (14th), Aditya Birla Group (15th), The Oberoi Group (16th), HDFC Bank (17th), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (18th) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (19th).

Separate Telengana Demand: Pro-Telangana leaders meet, agitation to be stepped up in July

The TRS today indicated that the agitation for a separate Telangana state would be stepped up in July.

Leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and other pro-Telangana organisations held a meeting here, which was chaired by TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao. The participants decided to meet again on June 7 to finalise the agitation programmes, to be taken up next month.

TRS sources said a massive agitation, on the lines of the ’Million March’ here in March this year, was being planned.

Last March they said it would be in May, then in May they said it would be in June, now in June they say in July.

Lets wait for July, then!

When CPM was drubbed in West Bengal and denied re-election in Kerala, its General Secretary Prakash Karat, his Wife, Ms. Brinda Karat, the Politburo Member and its spokes persons and senior leader, Mr. Sitaram Yechury were no where to be seen for their initial reactions.

At least Mr. Sitaram Yechury has proved that he is still alive by condemning the UPA for hiking petrol by Rs. 5/- as gift to the electorate that voted them. (Did they?).
