A massive car bomb has killed up to 10 people at the UN offices in the Nigerian capital.

Witnesses in Abuja told AP that a car drove through the compound's gates and drove towards the four-storey building before the explosion.

There are reports an entire wing of the building has been destroyed.

UN worker Ocilake Michael told Reuters: “We just saw the blast coming from the building. All the people in the basement were killed. Their bodies are littered all over the place”.

A Unicef worker, Michael Ofilaje, told AP: “The blast came from the basement and shook the building.”

A passenger train carrying about 500 people had a miraculous escape in Assam on Friday when police seized a powerful bomb from one of the coaches.

A police spokesperson said the bomb was recovered from one of the coaches of the Kamakhya-Puri Express near the Pancharatna station in western Goalpara district early on Friday.

The train was bound for Puri in Orissa from Assam's main city of Guwahati.

"We had some information that a bomb was being carried in the train and hence we conducted a massive search operation after stopping the train at Pancharatna station and recovered a powerful improvised explosive device concealed in a sack," Goalpara district police chief Luis Aind told IANS.

Bomb experts defused the explosive.

Police picked up one person suspected to have been carrying the bomb.

"Investigations are on to find if the person we picked was actually carrying the bomb or not," the official said.

Sydney authorities worked for 10 hours to free Madeleine Pulver, 18, from a device suspected of being a collar bomb—but turned out to be fake. David Leser on the teenager’s ordeal.

The elegant Sydney Harbor suburb of Mosman was the scene Wednesday of a horrifying hostage bomb scare after an 18-year-old young woman had a suspected explosive device strapped to her neck by a balaclava-wearing intruder.

For 10 hours Wednesday, Sydney time, schoolgirl Madeleine Pulver sat terrified and transfixed in her family home as police and bomb disposal experts worked to free her from what they believed was “a collar bomb,” never before seen in Australia.

Police said they faced an unprecedented situation, both “extremely complex and stressful,” given that the device was thought to be a remotely detonated bomb, or one capable of being activated by a trembler switch. The trembler switch has been used by the Provisional IRA and other terrorist groups to detonate car bombs from safe distances. They can be set off when the explosive device is tilted beyond a certain angle.

At midnight last night, the device was found to be “a very, very elaborate hoax,” possibly part of an extortion against the young woman’s family.

Police try to defuse bomb 'strapped to teenage girl' in Sydney

A teenage girl is at the centre of an unfolding drama in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs after she was found by police in her home with a bomb strapped around her neck.

Reports suggested the 18 year old girl has been at the property in Mosman, on Sydney’s leafy North Shore, when an intruder broke in and fitted her with the device against her will at about 2.40pm. Once the intruder left the property she rang police for help.

Police have refused to confirm reports that she was also left with a ransom note.

However, she is understood to be the daughter of a wealthy Sydney businessman and Australian media have suggested that the extraordinary incident might be part of an extortion attempt.

Police, bomb squads and negotiators were on the scene, attempting to determine if the bomb was live or could be controlled remotely.

Assistant police commissioner Mark Murdoch told the assembled media that police were trying to “work out what it is and more importantly what it isn’t.”

More than 7 hours after police arrived at the house, Mr Murdoch said the woman was “doing pretty well” and remained calm.

Anti-landmine activists in western Uganda were stunned to discover a primary school using an unexploded mortar bomb as a bell, the group's coordinator told the media on Monday.

"It was a big shock. When we arrived at the school we even found one of the students striking it," Wilson Bwambale, coordinator of Anti-Mines Network Rwenzori, said.

Bwambale said his team visited the 350-pupil Ikobero Model primary school, one kilometre from Uganda's border with Democratic Republic of Congo, last week after being tipped off by a curious community leader.

"The bottom was hollow, that is why they used it as a bell, but the fuse at the top was still live," Bwambale said. "Fortunately no one hit it with enough (force) to explode the bomb."

Following the discovery, Bwambale said he called the shocked teachers to a meeting, where he was told that the school had been using the bomb as a bell for three years.
