A passenger train carrying about 500 people had a miraculous escape in Assam on Friday when police seized a powerful bomb from one of the coaches.

A police spokesperson said the bomb was recovered from one of the coaches of the Kamakhya-Puri Express near the Pancharatna station in western Goalpara district early on Friday.

The train was bound for Puri in Orissa from Assam's main city of Guwahati.

"We had some information that a bomb was being carried in the train and hence we conducted a massive search operation after stopping the train at Pancharatna station and recovered a powerful improvised explosive device concealed in a sack," Goalpara district police chief Luis Aind told IANS.

Bomb experts defused the explosive.

Police picked up one person suspected to have been carrying the bomb.

"Investigations are on to find if the person we picked was actually carrying the bomb or not," the official said.

A youth in Assam has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the longest scratch art piece.

"It took me 12 hours to complete the piece measuring 20.30 metres in length and 1.4 metres in width," Apuraj Barooah said.

An award from the Guinness authorities along with a certificate was presented to Barooah for his effort in London on July nine.

Jack Brockman of the Guinness World Records, said, "We are happy Barooah has achieved the record for the longest scratch art piece.
His piece contains 40 pictures of world folk dances including the famous Bihu dance of Assam."

Brockman said, "All the criteria were examined in the presence of some 45 people and we are proud of him." The piece depicted a landscape with fold dancers from 40 countries including India, UK, USA, Spain, Italy, China, Australia, Brazil, Japan, South Africa, France and Thailand.

Scratch art or scratchboard art is a technique where drawings are created using sharp knives and tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay which is coated with black ink.

A major disaster was averted Sunday when three powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were defused from the busy Vehbari area in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district.

Police said the three explosives were detected during a joint patrol by the Army and police at Vehbari near Bagsa. The Army’s bomb defusal squad defused the IEDs.

Guwahati:  Just hours after the Kalka Mail derailed today in Uttar Pradesh claiming 31 lives, another train has derailed in Assam.

Four bogies of the Guwahati-Puri Express derailed near Rangia, 65 kilometres from the capital Guwahati.

Fifty people have reportedly been injured in the accident.

Initial Reports suggest that this derailment has taken place on account of a possible bomb blast by the Terrorists, which is yet to be confirmed by the officials!

The authorities on Friday imposed Section 144 CrPC across the capital town soon after the arrest of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi from the Press Club here on Friday afternoon when he was addressing a crowded press meet.

The move was aimed at preventing any untoward incident following the arrest with his supporters converging in the Pan Bazar police station where he was taken after arrest.

His slogan shouting supporters tried to stage demonstration in front of the police station but the police thwarted the attempt.

Mr. Gogoi’s wife Dr Gitashree Tamuly said, “Being an activist, arrests are part of my husband’s life ...it is not a big problem. He is ready to face any eventuality.

“The voice of the people could not be stifled by arresting him. Many more voices would come out to fight injustice”, she asserted.
