Nafissatou Diallo’s attorneys depict a scene of physical confrontation and sexual violence characterized by even more ‘depravity’ than previously described.

In a ferocious assault on the personal character, professional arrogance, and sexual predilections of former International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, lawyers for the hotel chambermaid who has accused him of attempted rape and criminal sexual assault filed a civil suit in New York today.

Strauss-Kahn has denied all criminal charges lodged against him, and still stands a good chance of having them dropped by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. But in their complaint on behalf of Nafissatou Diallo, a 32-year-old illiterate African immigrant employed by the Manhattan Sofitel hotel, attorneys Kenneth Thompson and Douglas Wigdor depict a scene of physical confrontation and forced oral sex characterized by more “sheer depravity,” to use their words, than previously described.

Strauss-Kahn will have at least 20 days to respond to the civil complaint from the time he is served with the papers. As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, that had not happened. He is due for a new hearing on the criminal charges on August 23.

If the rhetoric of Diallo’s attorneys could condemn, then Strauss-Kahn would be headed straight for perdition—or at least massive payments, whether settled before a jury or out of court. The burden of proof in a civil case is much lower than in a criminal case, which requires that guilt be established “beyond a reasonable doubt.” But the tenuousness of the criminal case against Strauss-Kahn (or DSK, as he’s widely known) stems from doubts about the plaintiff’s past and her history of lying on official documents, including a fictionalized claim of rape on her asylum application. How those will play in a civil court remains an open question, and Thompson and Wigdor have been fighting a high-profile battle to keep the criminal case engaged even as they prepared the civil suit.

MARION, Ohio (AP) -- Two Ohio men honored as heroes for their actions after a 2009 car crash are now suing the woman they rescued from a burning vehicle.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the suit filed in central Ohio's Marion County by David Kelley and Mark Kincaid claims Theresa Tanner was at fault and that saving her left the men with disabling injuries. They're each seeking upwards of $25,000 in damages.

Disputes Over Online Animals End Up in Real-World Court; Fretting Over 'Star'.

A palomino mare named Star grazes on Debbie DeLouise's clover meadow, hanging out at a salt lick there and frolicking with her foal Holly.

But a legal dispute may imperil their pastoral bliss: It threatens to close the only store where Ms. DeLouise can buy food for Star and Holly. Without their special diet, the horses would waste away and turn green.

"If there's no food, I'm not sure what will happen," says Ms. DeLouise, a Long Island, N.Y., librarian. "I certainly hope no one has to find out."

Star and Holly aren't real horses. They exist only within Linden Research Inc.'s "Second Life," an online virtual world where people can fashion a new existence. But while the buying, breeding and riding of horses happens in the virtual world, litigation over them happens in real-life federal court.

The case brushing up against the horses owned by Ms. DeLouise—whose "Second Life" avatar, or alter ego, is a younger, bigger-haired version of herself—began last fall.

Virtual rabbit maker Ozimals Inc., and Amaretto Ranch Breedables LLC, the creator of Ms. DeLouise's horses, share a similar business model. Each sells cheap virtual animals to participants of "Second Life." Both make the bulk of their money by selling the food these pets need. Demand for the chow is heightened by a secondary animal market, in which bunny and horse enthusiasts breed their virtual animals and sell the offspring—sometimes for hundreds of dollars in the case of beasts with rare colors.

Ozimals, based in Pelham, Ala., has alleged that Amaretto copied its software, using horses instead of rabbits. "Amaretto's deliberate copying of Ozimals' intellectual property is undeniable," a lawyer for Ozimals wrote in a November letter to Linden and Amaretto. The letter asked that Linden shut down Amaretto's store—a move that would starve its horses and constrain its revenues. Linden declined.

A Pakistani couple is suing American Airlines after they were escorted off a plane in handcuffs based on a telephone hijacking threat that turned out to be a hoax.

The lawsuit, transferred to federal court on Tuesday, also names the San Francisco Police department.

Indian diplomat's daughter files $1.5m suit against New York City!

NEW YORK: An Indian diplomat's daughter is suing New York City's government for $1.5 million for what she claims was a wrongful arrest on the suspicion of sending obscene emails to her teacher in Queens' John Browne High School.

Krittika Biswas, daughter of the vice counsel at the Indian Consulate in Manhattan, Debashish Biswas, also claims that she was ill-treated in prison.

Biswas alleged that she was not allowed to use the bathroom for a long-time when she was in custody at the 107th precinct. "Eventually, I had to go in front of everyone," Biswas said, referring to a small toilet that was in the cell occupied by other persons.


Now that it is proved that she was mistakenly arrested and ill-treated, she is entitled to justice.
