People onboard MV Rak being rescued by the Indian Coast Guard off Mumbai coast on Thursday.

Crew of the carrier, which sank in the Arabian Sea, was saved by Indian Navy, Coast Guard

Dody Suryauuan, the 36-year-old Indonesian motorman of move. Rak Carrier, sat with his hands folded. A soiled and oil-stained T-shirt and a pair of soiled track-pants that he wore was all he could manage to salvage after his home and workplace for nearly two months started sinking in front of his eyes.

The 225-metre-long and 32.2-metre-wide Panama-flagged bulk carrier sank in the Arabian Sea on Thursday afternoon, nearly 20 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast. Its crew was saved by the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard in a joint operation. The Captain of the ship said he managed to get everyone's passport and travel documents with him.

“A big thank you, Navy… they… very good,” Dody said in broken English, as he tried to explain how the Navy evacuated them.

Son of a seaman, he had grown up to love the profession. “It is dangerous but no problem,” he said. This was his first visit to Mumbai, an unplanned and not a very pleasant one. Waiting outside the Yellow Gate police station where all the crew members were brought, he kept looking at the incessant rain.

“[Does] it keep raining here like this?” he asked, suddenly feeling choked. As he tried to wipe off his tears, he said: “[It] reminds [me] of my country, my home. There also it keeps raining like this. People here look same as people of my country. I am sad. I remember my country, my home.” He said he would soon meet his parents, wife and daughter.

AP / The Hindu / MANILA, PHILIPPINES, July 31, 2011.

The Philippine coast guard and fishermen rescued 168 people who were on board a passenger ship that tilted for three hours before sinking early Sunday in the central Philippines, officials said.
The steel-hulled M/V Asia Malaysia was heading from the central Cebu region to Iloilo province on an overnight trip when it began to tilt to its right, or starboard side, at dawn Sunday, coast guard chief Admiral Ramon Liwag said. The cause of the problem was not immediately clear.
The ship’s captain sent a distress call to the coast guard and ordered all passengers and his crewmen to abandon the 2,400-ton vessel, which tilted about six kilometres from its destination before sinking amid rain, coast guard spokesman Lt. Commander Algier Ricafrente said.
Coast guard vessels, fishermen and two passenger ships saved 168 passengers and crewmen from the ship, which had a capacity of 550 people, Mr. Ricafrente said. It was unclear how many people the M/V Asia Malaysia was carrying.
Coast guard helicopter was scouring the area for other possible survivors and to check whether there was an oil slick from the ship, he said.

A young woman returning home from work was chased and abducted in the capital by five youths, including two college students, after a verbal duel in the early hours today but was dramatically rescued after a long chase by police from neighbouring Faridabad.

The woman, who works at a mall in Gurgaon, was returning home along with a colleague and two relatives when the youths intercepted their car near Ghitorni Metro Station and abducted her after beating her friends and the cab driver.

It was the cab driver's alertness that helped police rescue the woman as he managed to inform police about the abduction, Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said.

The arrested have been identified as Kartar Singh (22), a BSc final year student who also runs a play school in partnership with his sister, and Pramod Singh (23), a final year BBA student.

Their three friends Ravish Nagar, Deepak and Arun are absconding.

"The incident leading to the abduction came after a party in Faridabad to celebrate Kartar buying a new SUV. They consumed liquor and then proceeded to Gurgaon. They tried to gain entry into a night club in Gurgaon but were not allowed.
"Subsequently, they went to the mall where they spotted the victim and others. They had a verbal altercation with the victim."

As the women left the mall, the youths chased them and intercepted near Ghitorni.

They abducted one of the girls and fled from the spot towards Faridabad," Sharma said.

Police received a call at around 3.30 am and immediately, night patrolling parties and picket staff were alerted and intensive checking of vehicles began.

According to the victim, she along with her and two of their relatives were returning home after the mall was closed at two am. They hired a private cab to go home.

"The cab they were travelling in was intercepted and as soon as the driver stopped the vehicle, the youths dragged the victim into their SUV. When the complainant and other girls resisted, they beat them up," Sharma said.
