GADAFFI'S LIBYA: Murky dealings - Libya's links with CIA revealed!

Cooperation in the rendition of terror suspects for interrogation.

The CIA worked closely with Muammar Qadhafi's intelligence services in the rendition of terror suspects to Libya for interrogation, according to documents seen on Saturday by the AP, cooperation that could spark tensions between Washington and Libya's new rulers.

The CIA was among a number of foreign intelligence services that worked with Libya's agencies, according to documents found at a Libyan security agency building in Tripoli.

Reports of such cooperation have surfaced before, but the documents provide new details on the ties between Western countries and Mr. Qadhafi's regime. Many of those same countries backed the NATO attacks that helped Libya's rebels force Mr. Qadhafi from power.

One notable case is that of Abdel-Hakim Belhaj, commander of the anti-Qadhafi rebel force that now controls Tripoli. Mr. Belhaj is the former leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, a now-dissolved militant group with links to al-Qaeda. Mr. Belhaj says he was tortured by CIA agents at a secret prison, then returned to Libya.

Two documents from March 2004 appear to be American correspondence to Libyan officials to arrange Mr. Belhaj's rendition.

Referring to him by his nom de guerre, Abdullah al-Sadiq, the documents say he will be flown from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Libya and asks for Libyan government agents to accompany him.

It also requests American “access to al-Sadiq for debriefing purposes once he is in your custody.”

“Please be advised that we must be assured that al-Sadiq will be treated humanely and that his human rights will be respected,” the document says.

Peter Bouckaert of Human Rights Watch, which found the documents, called the ties between Washington and Qadhafi's regime “a very dark chapter in American intelligence history, and it remains a stain on the record of the American intelligence services that they cooperated with these very abusive intelligence services.”

In Washington, CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood declined to comment Saturday on any specific allegation related to the documents.

“It can't come as a surprise that the Central Intelligence Agency works with foreign governments to help protect our country from terrorism and other deadly threats,” Ms. Youngblood said. “That is exactly what we are expected to do.”

U.N. mission

Ian Martin, a special envoy for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Tripoli on Saturday, as Mr. Ban said the world body was ready to help. “I am here now to discuss with the National Transitional Council how the United Nations can be most helpful in the future,” Mr. Martin told reporters on arrival. He flew in amid questions about the U.N.'s future role in the country, particularly about whether a peacekeeping mission will be necessary.

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - Hunted throughout her homeland and forced to flee into exile across a dangerous desert border, the daughter of ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi paused somewhere in the Sahara to have a baby.

The dramatic birth of Gadhafi's granddaughter, less than 24 hours after her mother and other relatives escaped Libyan territory into Algeria, lends a human dimension to the dictator's downfall and the ongoing mystery of his whereabouts.

The birth in exile was disclosed by the Algerian Health Ministry on Tuesday, but an official with the ministry would provide no other information, including exactly where the delivery occurred. The official was not authorized to be publicly named according to ministry rules.

Gadhafi's only biological daughter, Aisha had fled with Gadhafi's wife Safia, and two of her brothers, Hannibal and Mohammed, entering southern Algeria from the Libyan border Monday, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said. Algerian news reports had said Aisha's pregnancy was one reason for Algeria's controversial decision to take the family in.

An Algerian newspaper reported that the exiles, who also included an unknown number of Gadhafi's grandchildren by his eight children, had waited 12 hours to receive authorization to cross the Algerian border from President Abdelaziz Bouteflika - while Aisha was in labor.

GADAFFI'S LIBYA: Foreign Firms Aided Libyan Spies!

[LIBYA2]
One of countless files from Libya's internet surveillance center. The Wall Street Journal.

TRIPOLI—On the ground floor of a six-story building here, agents working for Moammar Gadhafi sat in an open room, spying on emails and chat messages with the help of technology Libya acquired from the West.

The recently abandoned room is lined with posters and English-language training manuals stamped with the name Amesys, a unit of French technology firm Bull SA, which installed the monitoring center. A warning by the door bears the Amesys logo. The sign reads: "Help keep our classified business secret. Don't discuss classified information out of the HQ."

The room, explored Monday by The Wall Street Journal, provides clear new evidence of foreign companies' cooperation in the repression of Libyans under Col. Gadhafi's almost 42-year rule. The surveillance files found here include emails written as recently as February, after the Libyan uprising had begun.

One file, logged on Feb. 26, includes a 16-minute Yahoo chat between a man and a young woman. He sometimes flirts, declaring that her soul is meant for him, but also worries that his opposition to Col. Gadhafi has made him a target.

"I'm wanted," he says. "The Gadhafi forces ... are writing lists of names." He says he's going into hiding and will call her from a new phone number—and urges her to keep his plans secret.

"Don't forget me," she says.

This kind of spying became a top priority for Libya as the region's Arab Spring revolutions blossomed in recent months. Earlier this year, Libyan officials held talks with Amesys and several other companies including Boeing Co.'s Narus, a maker of high-tech Internet traffic-monitoring products, as they looked to add sophisticated Internet-filtering capabilities to Libya's existing monitoring operation, people familiar with the matter said.

Al Arabiya: The Algerian government on Monday confirmed that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's wife and three of his sons have entered its territory.

"The wife of Muammar Gaddafi, Sofia, his daughter Aisha, and sons Hannibal and Mohammad, accompanied by their children, entered Algeria at 08:45am (0745 GMT) through the Algeria-Libyan border," the foreign ministry said in a statement published by APS news agency, giving no information on the whereabouts of Gaddafi himself.

Meanwhile, one of Gaddafi's sons may be placed on the war crimes court's most wanted list, the prosecutor told Reuters on Monday.

VIDEO CLIP: Luxury, horror lurk in Gadhafi family compound!

By Dan Rivers, CNN Correspondent / August 29, 2011 -- Updated 0452 GMT (1252 HKT).

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) - Moammar Gadhafi told his people he lived modestly during his nearly 42-year rule over Libya, often sleeping in a Bedouin tent.

Even if that was true for the leader, it certainly wasn't for his sons.

At a seaside compound in western Tripoli, the Gadhafi boys enjoyed a decadent lifestyle that his people could only dream about, while perpetrating unspeakable horrors on the staff that served their every whim.

CNN visited the seaside homes Sunday.

The first house we entered was apparently the "party" beach condo with an oversized door that led into sleek, modern, black-and-white rooms. It had been ransacked by the rebels, but still it was spectacular, with panoramic ocean views and plenty of evidence of the hedonism for which Hannibal Gadhafi -- one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons - is famous.

For a quarter of a century, Colonel Gaddafi claimed that his adopted baby daughter Hana was killed in a U.S. airstrike.

The dictator even set up a shrine to the six-month-old infant in his Tripoli compound, with replica American missiles and furniture preserved behind glass screens.

Yesterday, however, it appeared that it was all a ruse to whip up hatred against the West and win sympathy from ordinary Libyans.

Documents and photographs found in the compound suggest that far from perishing in the 1986 attack, Hana is alive – and working as a doctor.

She studied medicine in Tripoli and four years ago took English classes at the British Council in the Libyan capital, for which she received an A grade.

An examination paper from a Libyan medical facility was written in Arabic and signed ‘Hana Muammar Gaddafi’.

Tripoli prays for peace as rebels hunt Gaddafi!

(Reuters) - The people of Tripoli ventured out to mosques on Friday, praying for peace and offering thanks for the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, though the Libyan capital remained locked down and dangerous as rebel fighters hunted the fugitive strongman.

Libya's new leaders pressed foreign powers for cash to build an army and police force, as well as hospitals, schools and the means to exploit their oil wealth. But as Muslims prepared for the great festival of Eid, many Libyans and their backers in the West saw the first priority as capturing or killing Gaddafi.

"Gaddafi is the biggest criminal and dictator and we hope we will find him before the end of Ramadan," said Milad Abu Aisha, a 60-year-old pensioner who joined friends at his local mosque in Tripoli. The last Friday prayers of the fasting month, which ends with Eid on Monday, are traditionally well attended.

"It will be the happiest Eid in 42 years," said Mohammed al-Misrati, a 52-year-old office worker who was among hundreds streaming toward the mosque under the protection of armed local men who have formed ad hoc security units across the capital.

"We have a taste of freedom after 42 years of repression and oppression," said Misrati. "We have discovered freedom."
