Kicking up a new controversy, the Union minister for rural development, Mr Jairam Ramesh, says mega irrigation, mining and other infrastructure projects are the modern equivalents of Naxalite tyranny.

Kicking up a new controversy, the Union minister for rural development, Mr Jairam Ramesh, says mega irrigation, mining and other infrastructure projects are the modern equivalents of Naxalite tyranny.

Mr Ramesh also disclosed that the number of Left Wing Extremists (LWE)- affected districts in the country will go up from 68 to 78, including eight in AP from the present two, Adilabad and Khammam.

“There is a modern face and traditional face in Naxalism. The modern face reflects in projects flouting environmental issues and land acquisitions. The modern face includes Posco, Vedanta, Sompeta, bauxite mining in Araku and the like,” he remarked, naming the so-called developmental projects that have been highly controversial.

Congress today disapproved of Union Minister Jairam Ramesh's controversial act of wiping his shoe with a garland of spun cotton given by party members while welcoming him at a public function in Rajasthan.

"In the life of a nation there are certain symbols and one should be more careful and sensitive about them," AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said reacting to the development.

The cotton garlands were offered to Ramesh by Congress office-bearers Rameshwar Dudi and Rampyari Vishnoi at a function yesterday.

When the minister was sitting on a chair at the dais, he took off the garlands and put them on a table.

After some time, he took a garland and cleaned his shoe.

Reacting sharply, the state BJP criticised the minister's act and demanded an apology from him saying: "The garland is a symbol of Gandhi's spinning wheel. It (the act) is an insult to Gandhi's khadi."

AICC leaders said that Dwivedi's remark was equally applicable to former Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar who had described the Congress as a 'circus'.

• Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh has more than once declared his resolve to have 30% forest cover in the country but the big question is whether he is fighting a losing battle against the proponents of development.
  Earlier this month, Mr Ramesh, during a visit to Bengaluru, had said one of his top priorities is getting a `No go area’ demarcated along the ecologicaly sensitive Western Ghats, so that the flora and fauna there are not affected by development projects.
  However, at the central level, events are not taking the course Mr Ramesh would have liked them to. A Group of Ministers (GoM), comprising Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, home minister P. Chidambaram and Planning Commission chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, are looking into the various projects for which environmental clearances were sought and were turned down by the ministry of environment and forests(MOEF).

His talk lacks both comprehension and conviction; also deficient in political will!

NEW DELHI: Reposing complete trust in the creative potential of the faculty at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday said that if the IITs had not gained the critical mass to change the global scientific discourse, it was because of the “ecosystem,” including lack of infrastructure and investment, and not because of the faculties.

Without naming his Cabinet colleague, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh, who had earlier this week said the IITs and the IIMs faculty was not “world class” and paid little attention to research, Mr. Sibal said: “We are in a democracy and my colleagues are entitled to give their opinion, but the opinion should be based on facts and not perception.”

It is silly to accuse the faculty to be dumb, while its students to be excellent! How could the lake be bad while the water is good or the Tree to be bad, while the fruit be good?
