BEIJING – Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has launched his first scathing attack on the Chinese government since his release from secretive detention in late June, accusing officials of denying citizens their basic rights.

In a strongly worded commentary published late on Sunday on the website of Newsweek magazine, Ai — whose detention sparked an international outcry — said the capital Beijing was “a city of violence”.

He criticised the government for rampant corruption, the judicial system and its policy on migrant workers — issues that have inflamed social tensions in China.

Ai’s commentary signals his growing impatience with the strict terms of his release from custody in late June after 81 days. It also presents Beijing with a direct challenge on how to handle the country’s most famous social critic.

“Every year millions come to Beijing to build its bridges, roads, and houses…. They are Beijing’s slaves,” Ai wrote. “They squat in illegal structures, which Beijing destroys as it keeps expanding. Who owns houses? Those who belong to the government, the coal bosses, the heads of big enterprises. They come to Beijing to give gifts — and the restaurants and karaoke parlours and saunas are very rich as a result.”

Chennai: Quoting DMK chief M Karunanidhi's controversial remarks against Lord Rama over the Sethusamudram issue, the ruling AIADMK on Thursday sought to hit back at him on the issue of a new assembly complex built during his regime, wondering whether he possessed an engineering degree.
Referring to former deputy chief minister MK Stalin's past remarks that his father Karunanidhi was associated with the construction of the new assembly-cum-secretariat complex brick by brick, AIADMK member S Valarmathy during a debate in the assembly asked, "Does it mean Karunanidhi possesses an engineering degree?"
The AIADMK government has stopped construction activity on the new complex pending an inquiry into "alleged irregularities" in the Rs 1,000 crore project after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced she will continue to work from the centuries-old Fort St George citing administrative reasons.

NEW DELHI: A top Sri Lankan official has hit out at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for demanding the trial of leaders in Colombo for alleged "war crimes".

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa also told Headlines Today that Sri Lankan would not devolve any more powers to the minorities in spite of the promises it made in the past.

"If they are interested in the welfare of (Tamil) people, it is useless calling for international investigation," Rajapaksa said in an interview in Colombo. "What does that bring to the people?"

The Tamil Nadu assembly, controlled by Jayalalithaa's AIADMK party, has passed a resolution calling for a trial against Sri Lankan leaders accused of committing "war crimes" in the war against the Tamil Tigers.

She has called for international sanctions against Sri Lanka.

Rajapaksa said: "This (resolutions) must be for her to gain political advantage... It is not reasonable because ... we are Sri Lankans. We are more worried about our citizens than anyone else.

"This (resolution and statements by Jayalalithaa) is without knowing facts."

Slamming the UPA government for the price rise, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said it was the Centre’s responsibility to bring down the prices.

“It is the Central government which is responsible for rise of prices all over India. It is upto the government to take appropriate steps to bring down prices,” she told reporters after inaugurating the renovated Press Room at the state Secretariat here.

She said the Centre has to take steps to bring down prices to help the common man.

Her comments came on a day when the Opposition initiated a debate on price rise in the Lok Sabha.

The Press Room, according to a State government release, was renovated at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.

(TV grab) Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh wipes his shoes with a cotton garland during a function in Bikaner - PTI.

Congress today disapproved of Union Minister Jairam Ramesh's controversial act of wiping his shoe with a garland of spun cotton given by party members while welcoming him at a public function in Rajasthan.
"In the life of a nation there are certain symbols and one should be more careful and sensitive about them," AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said reacting to the development.
The cotton garlands were offered to Ramesh by Congress office-bearers Rameshwar Dudi and Rampyari Vishnoi at a function yesterday.
When the minister was sitting on a chair at the dais, he took off the garlands and put them on a table.
After some time, he took a garland and cleaned his shoe.
Reacting sharply, the state BJP criticised the minister's act and demanded an apology from him saying: "The garland is a symbol of Gandhi's spinning wheel. It (the act) is an insult to Gandhi's khadi."
AICC leaders said that Dwivedi's remark was equally applicable to former Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar who had described the Congress as a 'circus'.
