Firefighters sprayed water onto cars at the site of suicide bombing in Quetta, Pakistan, on Wednesday.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — At least 10 people were killed in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday when a suspected suicide car bomb exploded in a crowd of Shiite worshippers near a mosque, police officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Sunni militants were suspected in the attack, which occurred on a day when Muslims celebrate Id al-Fitr, a holiday at the end of Ramadan. At least 20 people were wounded in the blast, officials said.

The explosion took place in the Murriabad neighborhood of Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan Province. Sectarian attacks are frequent in the city.

Shiites are a minority in the country and Sunnis hold a majority. Though both sects generally coexist peacefully, extremist Sunni groups often make religious minorities their targets.

A low-level insurgency by nationalists of the Baluch ethnic group has simmered in the province. Taliban militants have also found a safe haven in the province.

Washington: Al Qaeda's "nerve center" lies in Pakistan even though the recent killings of Osama bin Laden in May and now its number two Atiyah abd al-Rahman has dealt the global terror group severe blow, a senior US official said on Monday.

"Al-Qaeda in Pakistan clearly remains a nerve center of the organisation, remains dangerous. They have suffered significant losses in recent years," Pentagon spokesman, George Little told during an off-camera news conference in Washington.

Al Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula also remains a considerable concern, Little said in response to a question.

ISLAMABAD: An Anna Hazare is needed in Pakistan to lead the struggle against corruption if the country's political parties continue to be averse to taking decisive measures against graft, a Pakistani paper said Monday, commending the Indian activist for his "unflinching struggle" for the common people.

"Corruption has become so ingrained in Pakistan and the political class is seen so steeped in it that unless firm, decisive measures are taken to combat graft, some Anna Hazare will be needed here too to lead the people's struggle against the malaise," said an editorial in the Urdu daily Jang.

Commending Hazare, it said he had finally prevailed over the Indian government and parliament.

"He only called off his 12-day fast after parliament unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a strict Lokpal bill, and agreeing to the three main demands he had stuck to," the editorial said.

"India is one of the nations identified as corrupt, with both the government and private sector accused of it. There is a great deal of latent anger and resentment among the people and there are many sections which taken up the fight against corruption. But the way this social activist led a popular movement against corruption remains unparalleled," it said.

Imran Ali's kidnappers jabbed pistols into his sides and led him down a quiet street as fresh ethnic carnage spread fear in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi.

Two other people blindfolded and held with the construction worker had just been shot at point-blank range. It was his turn.

Minutes later he was face down in a ditch filled with sewage, playing dead until the men were satisfied that three bullets had done the job and walked away.

"It feels like people are just being picked off in the streets because of their ethnic background. How can we live like this," Ali, a member of Karachi's Urdu-speaking community, said from a hospital bed.
"Apocalypse is coming to Karachi."

Pakistan's financial capital has a long history of ethnic violence between the dominant Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) - which represents the Mohajirs, descendants of Urdu-speakers who migrated from India after Pakistan's birth in 1947 - and the ethnic-Pashtun Awami National Party (ANP).

Those parties are often accused of using ethnic gangs in a turf war over everything from land-grabbing schemes to extortion rackets to votes, allegations they deny.

But the worst bloodshed since the army was called in to ease street battles in the 1990s has created an unprecedented sense of doom and increased fears over instability in Pakistan, a strategic nuclear-armed U.S. ally.

"The political parties are giving their foot soldiers greater freedom. They seem to be doing whatever they want now," said a senior security official who refers to the violence as "ethnic cleansing."

The latest wave of violence came after the MQM pulled out of a national and provincial coalition with the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

More than 400 people have been killed since July.

Torture chambers, body parts in grain sacks

Torture chambers have emerged. Some people are drilled, burned, carved up and beheaded. Body parts are put in grain sacks and dumped in alleyways in a chilling new dimension to the strife, security officials say.

The security personnel belonged to the Chitral Scouts, Geo News said. Chitral borders Afghanistan's Badakhshan province.

Sources said there were around 400 Afghan militants involved in the attack. The militants attacked the Arson, Dameel Nisar, Bodebar and Mirkani check-posts with rockets and heavy weapons.

One of the places through which the militants entered the Pakistan side was Arendu town, 160 km from the Afghan city of Jalalabad.

Islamabad: A letter threatening to attack Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has been found in the court's parking lot, a media report said Saturday.

A seven-member police team is examining the letter, Dawn news reported.

The team has questioned Javed Altaf, a cameraman of a private TV channel who spotted the letter. He told the investigating body he found the letter lying between two cars.

A police officer said that in the letter, the English words were correctly spelt but the Urdu words were wrongly written.

It seemed a deliberate ploy by the writer to give a false impression, he said.
