‘Facebook crimes soaring, becoming more sophisticated,’ warn experts.

Facebook crimes that include scams, online bullying, phishing and many other forms of illegal activities are soaring, and are getting more sophisticated, cyber experts have warned.

Presently, rarer cybercrimes on Facebook involve the installation of malicious software, or ‘malware,’ on computers so credit card information can be easily stolen.

Experts claim that the rise of these Facebook crimes is not limited to just scams and phishing activities. There’s also sexual predation and even robberies that occur after users post GPS location about their whereabouts to inform others they are out of town.

Experts are weighing in on why these crimes are happening at such a rapid rate.

“These types of crimes are designed to use your own actions or weaknesses against you,” Fox News quoted Lynette Owens, director of a global digital security firm based in Tokyo, as saying.

“As humans, and for good reason, we put trust in others more often than not because most people at most times are worthy of that trust. The online world is no different than the offline world in that sense,” Owens said.

According to Paul Zak, a professor at Claremont College, scammers prey on Facebook because they don't know their victims, the report said.

“It's easier to hurt someone when you’re not seeing them in person,” Zak said.

“Neuroscience research shows that moral violations are less likely when interactions are personal because people empathize with those they meet in person. In the online world, people are just a number,” he added.

New Delhi:  There is war over the Commonwealth Games and the report of the government's auditor on it. In Parliament, where heated words were exchanged between the Opposition and the Treasury benches in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shouting slogans against Congress president Sonia Gandhi alleging that she had a role in appointing Suresh Kalmadi as chief of the Commonwealth Games organising committee.

And outside Parliament, at Jantar Mantar, where the BJP's youth workers clashed with the police. The BJP workers jumped a barricade to proceed towards Parliament House. The police struggled to bring the crowd under control using a lathicharge, water cannons and tear gas shells. The protestors threw what they could find back at the police. Both Houses of Parliament saw angry and noisy protests from the Congress when the BJP named Mrs. Gandhi. The furore - during a debate on Sports Minister Ajay Maken's statement that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government was responsible for the appointment of Mr Kalmadi - forced repeated adjournment of the Upper House for a while. A BJP MP made a derogatory remark and the Congress was up in arms demanding an apology. The MP had to apologise.

New Delhi: Former cricket captain Ravi Shastri has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate next week.

Shastri, who is now a commentator, was part of Lalit Modi's governing council in charge of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The flamboyant Mr Modi, who brought the T20 format to India and doused it with glamour and high-profile personalities, was sacked as Chairman of the IPL in April 2010 allegedly for a wide range of financial crimes and mismanagement.

The next in line, probably, would be Lalit Modi!

Despite being warned against it, the Congress has decided that it will stage its nyaya (justice) march in Lucknow. There's considerable tension in the city. A group of Congress workers were lathi-charged this afternoon and the party's president in UP, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, has been detained by the police.

Chief Minister Mayawati is meeting senior police and administration officials. The Congress says it has the right to protest against the breakdown of law and order in the state. In the last two weeks, a glut of attacks against young women - some of them Dalits - have fuelled the Opposition's allegations that the state, despite being headed by a woman, cannot protect young girls.

Mayawati says it's unfair of the media and the Opposition to single out UP for its crimes against women. She said that similar attacks take place elsewhere, but do not face the sort of microscopic attention that her administration is receiving.

"If any incident takes place in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress government takes that opportunity to put a wrong picture through the media. The Congress government plays politics on any incident that takes place in UP," Mayawati said.

No doubt, other states of India too have crime rates going up, by the day, but none as extensive as in UP of rapes of the weaker section women, especially minor girls, mutilating them and murdering them apart from the murders of politically inconvenient persons.

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) 'I was born and brought up in Midnapore in West Bengal. I have come here to earn a living. I am not a Bangladeshi,' pleaded 30-year-old Zakir. However, the identity documents he produced were found to be fake by Delhi Police which wasted no time in deporting him.

Zakir is one of the 140 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who have been deported from the capital, particularly northeast Delhi, in the past five months following a special drive by police.

The drive was launched after a spate of robberies and other crimes showed the involvement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, police say.
