‘Facebook crimes soaring, becoming more sophisticated,’ warn experts.

Facebook crimes that include scams, online bullying, phishing and many other forms of illegal activities are soaring, and are getting more sophisticated, cyber experts have warned.

Presently, rarer cybercrimes on Facebook involve the installation of malicious software, or ‘malware,’ on computers so credit card information can be easily stolen.

Experts claim that the rise of these Facebook crimes is not limited to just scams and phishing activities. There’s also sexual predation and even robberies that occur after users post GPS location about their whereabouts to inform others they are out of town.

Experts are weighing in on why these crimes are happening at such a rapid rate.

“These types of crimes are designed to use your own actions or weaknesses against you,” Fox News quoted Lynette Owens, director of a global digital security firm based in Tokyo, as saying.

“As humans, and for good reason, we put trust in others more often than not because most people at most times are worthy of that trust. The online world is no different than the offline world in that sense,” Owens said.

According to Paul Zak, a professor at Claremont College, scammers prey on Facebook because they don't know their victims, the report said.

“It's easier to hurt someone when you’re not seeing them in person,” Zak said.

“Neuroscience research shows that moral violations are less likely when interactions are personal because people empathize with those they meet in person. In the online world, people are just a number,” he added.

Standard & Poor’s downgrading of U.S. sovereign rating is a wake-up call for the American economy but India should keep up its “excellent” growth record, Chief Economic Advisor Kaushik Basu said on Saturday.

“While I personally feel the U.S. economy is very strong, rating downgrade like this is a wake-up call,” Mr. Basu said.

The Standard & Poor’s downgraded the U.S. government’s ‘AAA’ sovereign credit rating, stating that predictability about American policy making and political institutions have weakened at a time of fiscal challenge.

Dear Mr. Basu,

01) Growth that cannot control prices and make life miserable for middle class and lower classes in no growth;

02) Growth that could not create more jobs than it takes away from the Agricultural Sector is not Growth either;

03) Growth without equitable distribution of wealth to all stake-holders is a curse to the Economy!

China’s rapid economic growth slowed in the latest quarter to a still robust 9.5 per cent, easing fears of an abrupt slowdown and giving Beijing room to tighten controls to fight surging inflation.

Growth slowed from 9.7 per cent in the January-March quarter following repeated interest rate hikes and other controls, data showed on Wednesday. Factory output rebounded and retail sales grew by double digits.

While the United States and Europe try to shore up sluggish growth, Beijing wants to steer its breakneck expansion to a more manageable level and cool inflation that soared to a three-year high of 6.4 per cent in June.

“The strength of the economy will make them confident and well prepared to impose more tightening measures if needed,” said Frances Cheung, a senior strategist for Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

Many analysts had expected second-quarter growth of 9.3 per cent to 9.5 per cent. Asian stock markets, which have wilted in recent days amid Europe’s worsening debt crisis, got a boost from the Chinese economy’s resilience.

The slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy could have global repercussions if it cuts into demand for iron ore, factory machinery and other imports. Data released earlier showed China’s import growth fell sharply in June.

Inflation is politically dangerous for the communist government because it erodes the public’s economic gains and can fuel unrest.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert O. Blake on Friday said the future of Indian economy seems very bright and the country is likely to become the world’s third largest economy by 2030, and the largest by 2050.

He added, “The incredible growth of India’s economy has resulted in positive spill-over effect for the U.S. between 2002-2009, U.S. goods exports to India quadrupled, growing from $4.1 billion to more than $16.4 billion in 2009.”

“U.S. services exports to India more than tripled from $3.2 billion to $9.9 billion during the period,” he said.

Last year, U.S.-India trade in goods broke a record with U.S. exports increasing by 17 per cent and U.S. imports from India rising by 40 per cent, he said during a seminar, ‘West Bengal and Beyond: U.S.-India business links and prospects” in Kolkata.

“This surge of nearly 30 per cent to a high of $48.8 billion in goods trade moved India up two notches to become our 12th largest goods trading partner. This positive trend continues, with two-way trade up 19 per cent in the first quarter of 2011, over the same period last year,” he said.

Large-scale displacement due to land acquisition"

Expressing concern over displacement and loss of occupation for tribal women due to land acquisition, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Krishna Tirath has said such a move also exposed these women to “exploitation and trafficking.”

“The government will have to ensure security of livelihood of tribal population when their land is acquired,” she said at the ‘Scheduled Tribe Women and Children: Issues and Challenges for Development' conference here on Monday, which was convened to discuss issues of scheduled tribe women and children.

“Large-scale displacement of tribals due to land acquisition for development is a challenge. Women become most vulnerable in such situations. Being mainly employed in agriculture or forest-based livelihood, displacement deprives tribal women of their occupation, often leading to migration which exposes them [to] exploitation or trafficking,” she said. Ms. Tirath said the government was concerned about the issue of land acquisition and was holding deliberations.

Policy Talks on Podiums haven't changed the ground realities.  UPA ruled states are the greatest violators followed by regional party ruled states.  The selective agitations of the like of Rahul Gandhi in case of regional party ruled states, while all the while steadfastly ignoring the similar violations in the UPA ruled states hasn't helped the affected.

If any the only hope is the Judicial Intervention, as it happened in case of NOIDA forceful land acquisition scandal.
