Guwahati, July 1: Former Union home secretary G.K. Pillai’s statement that Akhil Gogoi is not a Maoist and that his arrest was an overreaction may have come as a huge relief to the RTI activist but it has also reflected a disconnect between Delhi and Dispur.

An official source here told The Telegraph today that the disconnect has come out in the open over the observations being made by both the governments over the June 22 Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti anti-eviction rally that left three dead.

“We still maintain that the KMSS has links with the Maoists, something which the special branch had informed the intelligence bureau soon after we arrested six persons for alleged Maoist links in Dhemaji in January, which was followed by the arrest of three youths from Orissa in February. Don’t know why the home ministry is dismissing these reports,” the source said.

The family of one of the arrested in Orissa, Aditya Bora, had allegedly said that he was a close acquaintance of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, who was a regular visitor to their house. Bora was also a member of Assam Students Youth Organisation, which was under the scanner allegedly being a front of Ulfa and was also believed to be associated with Brihat Nadibandh Pratirudh Mancha, six members of which were arrested in Dhemaji district on January 2, the source said.

Before demitting office yesterday, Pillai had said though there were Naxals in Assam, there was no evidence of Akhil’s involvement in Naxalite activities. Pillai’s statement stands out in contrast to chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s statement that one can infer from Akhil’s activities that he has Maoist links and today’s revelation by government sources that the KMSS has links with Maoist forces.

Anybody who protest against the state oppression is being branded as a Maoist and hounded with a series of police cases!

The authorities on Friday imposed Section 144 CrPC across the capital town soon after the arrest of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi from the Press Club here on Friday afternoon when he was addressing a crowded press meet.
The move was aimed at preventing any untoward incident following the arrest with his supporters converging in the Pan Bazar police station where he was taken after arrest.
His slogan shouting supporters tried to stage demonstration in front of the police station but the police thwarted the attempt.
Mr. Gogoi’s wife Dr Gitashree Tamuly said, “Being an activist, arrests are part of my husband’s life ...it is not a big problem. He is ready to face any eventuality.
“The voice of the people could not be stifled by arresting him. Many more voices would come out to fight injustice”, she asserted.
