Days ahead of her visit to New Delhi for crucial talks with her Indian counterpart, Pakistan’s new Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has said her priority in the parleys with India would be to set a future direction for the bilateral relationship.

Ms. Khar said it is a “positive step” that India is serious in the talks and is moving to institutionalise the process of negotiations with Pakistan.

There was forward movement in recent talks between the two countries, she said.

The Pakistani position for the upcoming talks is that it wants to “look at the entire picture and at the root causes of problems”, Ms. Khar said in an interview with state-run PTV.

It was the success of Pakistan to bring India back to the negotiating table, and the priority for the upcoming talks would be to set a future direction for bilateral relationship, she added.

INDO-PAK TALKS: Two blows to Indo-Pak ties, Perception from Pakistan!

TRIDIVESH SINGH MAINI

Two new developments could hurt the India-Pakistan dialogue, which was restored barely three months ago after a hiatus of more than two years.

First, the three blasts that rocked Mumbai on July 13 have come just when the dialogue seemed to be headed in the right direction, and barely two weeks before the foreign ministers of both countries were set to meet in Delhi. The timing has prompted sections of the media and strategic community to suggest the attack could have emanated from Pakistan.

Singh’s policy of engaging with Pakistan has already been criticised by members of the ‘strategic enclave,’ who say his quest for peace with the latter is futile. And, in all probability, the appetite for peace with Pakistan will dwindle even further for a number of reasons. First, as in the aftermath of 26/11, some members of the business community have come down heavily against the government for not being serious enough in making India terror free. This is one issue the government can’t afford to ignore. Also, with Uttar Pradesh elections around the corner, the opposition BJP (itself in total disarray) will be happy to resort to jingoism and to play the terrorism card.

Washington upset after Boeing and Lockheed Martin knocked out of race for combat aircraft
As the dust over rejection of two U.S. companies from the Rs. 11,000-crore Indian Air Force tender for fighter aircraft settles, official sources said the United States would also have to reconcile with India's unwillingness to sign three military pacts.
The U.S. was extremely upset after Boeing and Lockheed Martin were knocked out of the race for the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA).
The issue figured in the May 9 conversation between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. President Barack Obama after the U.S. Embassy contended that the evaluation was not transparent.
The final report listed some qualitative requirements not met by the U.S. companies. But Washington claimed that these deficiencies were not mentioned in the initial report.
However, India has been unwavering in backing the evaluation of some 600 qualitative requirements of the six fighters in contention.

Senator Kerry warns Pakistan on frayed U.S. ties!

ISLAMABAD | Mon May 16, 2011 10:24am EDT

(Reuters) - Some lawmakers believe Osama bin Laden presence Pakistan may have frayed ties with the United States beyond repair, Senator John Kerry told Islamabad on Monday, but added that their strategic relationship was too important to let go.

Washington's already fragile ties with ally Islamabad took a beating after U.S. special forces flew in from Afghanistan on a secret operation to find and kill bin Laden on May 2, nearly 10 years after he orchestrated the September 11 attacks on the United States.

His discovery holed up in the comfortable garrison town of Abbottabad, only 50 km (30 miles) from the Pakistani capital, has deeply embarrassed Pakistan's military and spy agency and revived suspicion that Pakistan knew where he was and has been playing a double game.
Et, tu Brute!
