Dehra Dun: Swami Shivanand, founder-head of Haridwar-based Matri Sadan Ashram, was quizzed by the CBI in connection with the death of Swami Nigamanand who undertook a fast demanding an end to illegal quarrying in river Ganga.

A CBI team visited the ashram on Monday and questioned Shivanand, Nigamanand's guru, and others, officials said on Tuesday.

Shivanand handed over to the probe team the photographs taken when Nigamanand was being shifted to Haridwar District Hospital from the fasting venue by the administration.

Citing the police crackdown on Ramdev and his supporters at Ramlila Ground here, activist Anna Hazare on Sunday said he will approach the Supreme Court seeking its intervention to ensure that the government does “not suppress” his fast on Lokpal issue beginning August 16.

“Government said we will suppress the agitation of Anna Hazare as had been done in the case of Baba Ramdev. Is this democracy or autocracy? You cannot suppress.... That is why we will go to the Supreme Court on Monday,” Mr. Hazare told reporters here.

Holding that the Constitution has given right to every citizen to protest democratically, the anti-corruption activist said he will launch his indefinite fast here from August 16 as announced.

“The Constitution has given right to every citizen to lodge a protest. We will launch the agitation from August 16,” he said.

The exercise to work out an agreed draft of the Lokpal Bill between the Government and Hazare-led civil society had ended in failure last month after which Mr. Hazare had announced that he will go ahead with his August fast.

01) Team-Anna has done a yeoman's job in rising the awareness among the people that a comprehensive Lokpal is required to fight against the rampant corruption that has been in existence in India at all levels and planes of our system.

02) While I, firmly, feel that the Lok Pal should confine to the National level high constitutional offices, while we can have other watch dogs for Judiciary, Revenue Departments and all, to ensure each does a focused job;

03) Now the fact of the matter is that the Lok Pal should be passed by the Members of Parliament and the Government of the day doesn't enjoy the majority and hence needs large-scale support from the opposition parties and no further pressure from any quarters can change this reality;

04)  Therefore, Team-Anna should allow some breathing space to the UPA Government and the Political Parties of India;

05) Despite this, if he or anybody goes ahead with 'Fast-onto-Death', they might allow the faster to die, the way they did to Swami Nigmanand, killing the cause with the faster-onto-death.

The elder brother of Swami Nigamanand, who died on June 13 after a four-month-long fast to protest illegal quarrying and mining, has lodged a complaint with police here apprehending threat to his family from a Haridwar-based seer and others, police said.

The family that never bothered to visit Swami Nigamanand, while he was hospitalised demanded his dead body so that they could cremate him as per their rituals.  Since, Swami renounced the worldly life and joined the Matrisadan, where the dead Sadhus would be cremated as befitting to a Sanyasi, which they did.

Now this brother of late Swami, Satyan Kumar Ashish, appear to be creating problems to the Matrisadan's management through false cases!

The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday said it is ready to order a CBI inquiry into the death of Swami Nigamanand, who was on fast for about four months protesting against illegal quarrying.

"The government had yesterday handed over the inquiry into the death of Swami Nigamanand to the CB-CID. But if the Matri Sadan ashram and family members of Swami Nigamanand want inquiry by any other agency or CBI, we are ready for that also,” State Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik told reporters in Dehra Dun.

Stating that though the post-mortem report of Swami Nigamanand has stated coma, septicaemia and degenerative brain disorder as the cause of death and his viscera has been preserved for further forensic examination, Mr. Kaushik said the government can also facilitate another sample of his viscera for the satisfaction of his ashram and family.

02)  The Superintendent of the Hospital had a cheek to suggest that the high levels of toxins found in the body of Swamiji could be due to continued fasting!  

03)  Check you Medical Lexicon, Mr. Superintendent, A starving body is not known to produce Inorganic insecticides, Mr. Doctor.

Yes, a CBI enquiry is required as the State Police and CB-CID could be influenced the way the Hospital staff were bought-out by that illegal mining Mafia.

While yoga guru Ramdev hogged the media limelight as religious leaders and political dignitaries made a beeline for the Himalayan Hospital at Jollygrant near Rishikesh to offer him juice to end his fast on Sunday, in another room in the same hospital lay another saint, Swami Nigmanand.

The latter had been fasting for the past two months to save the Ganga. Nigmanad died unsung early this morning. During the action-packed past three days, when the political and religious leaders converged at the hospital to meet Ramdev, no one cared to visit the unconscious young saint.

Swami Nigmanand of Matra Sadan passed away at the hospital at 2.30 am, leaving his followers and even his guru shocked. He had been on fast-unto-death since February 19, 2011, for the 68th consecutive day, when he was forcibly hospitalised by the district administration.

01)   This, amply demonstrates that, we as a Society, are cruel, ignorant and insensitive to the grave issues like Ecological Degradation that concerns us as well as threatens the very sustenance of our near future generations.

02)  Cruel because we over-react to the 'Dharnas' of the popular, while all the while carelessly ignore those who couldn't command the attention of the Media, the Elite and the Leaders.

03)  Ignorant because our leaders, media and the Elite are blissfully unaware and / or callous about our future Environmental Challenges that we force our immediate future generations to face.

04)  Insensitive as we rob the Ecological Security of our near future generations, for our own resource guzzling life-styles.

05)  In this gruesome crime and sin, we are all equal-partners including the Leadership - Political, Social, Economic, Media & the so-called Elite
