Mumbai:  For the Centre's crisis managers who have been writing off Anna Hazare's anti-graft movement as an uprising of the city-bred middle-class, here's refreshing news: rural India is standing by the corruption crusader and is ready to die for him.

A 32-year-old farmer, who has been fasting for seven days along with Anna, has shown the grit to travel barefoot from Anna's village all the way to Mumbai, with a cart in tow.

Vijay Balaso Jadhav, of Sangli district, started from Ralegan Siddhi on August 17 and reached the city on Sunday evening. He has covered a distance of around 400 km to express solidarity with the 74-year-old Gandhian.

On his way to Mumbai, Jadhav said he met hundreds of people at bus stops and railway stations and educated them on the Lokpal Bill, urging them to join the movement. Interestingly, a close look at the hand-pulled cart reveals a garlanded photo of Jadhav.

Asked why he adorned his own photo, he said, "I have come to fight the war against corruption and the enemy can do everything to kill us and crush our movement. So I have garlanded my own photo to send out a clear message that I am not afraid of death. I have already told my family to learn to live without me."

John breaks ‘anti-graft handi’ in Hazare’s support

Mumbai: John Abraham Monday expressed his support for Anna Hazare’s anti-graft stir by breaking a special dahi handi named ‘Anti Corruption Handi’ with his forehead.

"I am with Anna. All chors (thieves) should be thrown out," he told reporters after breaking the handi at Vihangs Palm Club in Thane.

At the handi breaking ceremony on the occasion of Lord Krishna`s birthday there, John supported the girls` team and cheered for them. The Bollywood hunk, sporting a Gandhi cap, awed the crowd interacting with them in chaste Marathi.

Banaskantha, Gujarat:  A 112-year-old ex-Army man has come out in support for Anna Hazare in the fight against corruption. He also wishes to fast with the 74-year-old Gandhian.

Ranchhod Desai, a veteran foot tracker from Limbala village in Gujarat's Vav district, had served in the Indian Army in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan.

"Anna is doing a great job to set the country free from the clutches of corrupt people, who are at the helm of affairs. I wish I could join him," Desai told PTI.

However, considering his age, Mr Desai, who is also known as the Old War Camel, has been advised not to fast.

Nonetheless, the veteran not only observed a fast for one day, but has been offering prayers for Mr Hazare's success every day since the agitation began at the Ramlila Ground in Delhi.

"Anna is an ex-Army man, who fought the 1965 Indo-Pak War. I pray to God to shower blessings on this noble son (Anna) of the country fighting for the second freedom fight," Desai said.

"Twinkle, twinkle little star, Anna is a superstar"!

NEW DELHI: Successful mass movements often offer fascinating insights into mobilisation of common people. And when ordinary people involved in them find creative ways to get their message across, they coin slogans that are both inventive and engaging. The ongoing anti-corruption movement is no exception.
One of the most common slogans doing the rounds on Thursday was "Anna nahin ye aandhi hai, desh ka dooja Gandhi hai" (Anna is a storm. He's the country's second Gandhi). The youth filling the Ramlila Maidan and the streets outside Tihar Jail had one simple question for Rahul Gandhi: "Saare yuva yahaan hain, Rahul Gandhi kahaan hai?" (The youth is here. Where is Rahul Gandhi?").
Late in the afternoon, schoolchildren of all ages made a beeline for Tihar jail. "Twinkle twinkle little star, Anna is a superstar," the chant went. Putting their street-lingo to best use, some carried "Anna Rocks!" placards. A few who seemed to have bunked school announced, "School nahin jaayenge, bhrashtachaar mitayenge" (We won't go to school, we'll eradicate corruption).

It is the middle class which is the most visible in the progress of this present movement. The invisible others, who have the strings in their hands, are getting increasingly frustrated

One of the big questions doing the rounds with many of the ruling political and perception management classes in Delhi, as well as with a certain set of largely Anglophile pretenders, is—"how did we, or our in-house intelligence agencies—get it so wrong?" Certainly, there are honourable exceptions, two that I know of—Dilip Cherian, for one (who strangely enough does not seem to have been consulted by the Congress, although he handled their election campaign), and the abrasive Arnab Goswami for another. Both of them had their fingers on the pulse of the Nation, and declared it in advance, getting it right against the flow on various public forums.
But most of the rest, including limousine liberals and elite media channels, were and are still largely sneering at matters. Till Anna Hazare pulled literally out of his Gandhi topi this most amazing series of checks and counter-checks leading to the eventual checkmate so brilliantly portrayed in a series of body language changes on the part of the ruling coteries related to the Tihar Jail episode. If there was anything that said it all, it was the way Ambika Soni looked soon after she came on television, at a point when the channels knew that Anna Hazare had refused to come out of jail—but apparently she didn't. Brave lady, at least she came in front of the camera—the rest simply vanished.
However, semantics aside, the big question is—how did so many people who are supposed to be in the know of things, get this simple equation, staring everybody else in the face in the country, wrong? To try and answer that, a much longer article or maybe even a book or three on how information and intelligence is sourced might help. For now, briefly, some of the tried and tested methods do not seem to be working, in both fields—media and intelligence.

What works, then? There are different methods for different people. For me, I find that not carrying a huge camera or pad and pen, and engaging people in conversation as another fellow traveller, seems to work much better now. People talk for cameras, period, so better not to carry a big one. And marrying that to intelligence obtained from trade sources, people who would normally never interact with media, but do because of other alignments. Which is what I have been doing over the past few days in Delhi.

Some aspects, not brought out elsewhere, but relevant all the same, that emerged were:
1)    The one group of people who have come out smelling of roses in this whole episode are the rank-and-file ground-level frontline staff from Delhi Police. The same people who were used in the Baba Ramdev fiasco, have been a totally different group when dealing with Anna Hazare's people, since they have seen themselves being used in this episode also. Talking with some of them, I found out, for example, that they had put the word out to all the petty criminals—pickpockets, bag-snatchers, and similar—to stay away from the Anna Hazare crowds. One reason, as explained to me, was that "Madam Bedi kee izzat ka sawaal hai" (The honour of Ms Kiran Bedi is at stake). The other was that they, too, are simply fed up of the way the country is being looted.

ANTI-CORRUPTION MOVEMENT: Spontaneous crowds gather in support of Anna!

For LEED Consultancy / IGBC Certifications, Green Building Design, Green Homes, Green Factory Buildings, Green SEZs, Green Townships & Energy Audits - www.greentekindika.com

Smriti Advani, CNN-IBN / Updated Aug 18, 2011 at 12:07am IST.

New Delhi: Anna supporters can be seen in huge numbers - outside Tihar Jail where Anna Hazare is staying, at Chhatrasal Stadium, where protesters were held and at JP Park, where Anna Hazare was to fast. They came in all shapes and sizes - some on their feet and some even on wheels.

So, who are the faces behind thousands of people out on the streets of Delhi - waving the national flag, passionately screaming slogans and sometimes even doing the things they would usually not do.

Mohammad is a driver and he doesn't know what the Lokpal or the Jan Lokpal Bill is, but he learnt about the 74-year-old man dressed in white with a Gandhi cap when he saw him on television on Wednesday morning. He was moved. So Mohammad came to Tihar Jail early this morning to show his support.

"I saw him on the news, so I come here to support him," said Mohammad.

Pramod, a student from Bihar, however knows both Anna and the two anti corruption bills behind this standoff. He came all the way to tell Anna - I am with you.

"The Government should just let him go," said Pramod.

What started as a crowd of just about 80 people outside the Tihar Jail practically tripled in number by the end of the day, with residents from neighbouring houses and students from nearby schools and colleges joining in the protest.

01) And the UPA Mis-managers having failed to stick any mud on Team-Anna's integrity have now started claiming the whole movement is being engineered by RSS (though, I, personally, see any reason why RSS shouldn't support a cause as this having such a great National Importance) and is instigated by U.S.A.!

02) True, among other entities RSS too has supporting this Anti-Corruption Movement and that fact is not going to make the seething anger of Indian citizens any less diluted;

03) Its also true that NRIs from USA too have supported this movement along with other NRIs from across the Globe, this fact doesn't prove the allegation that USA is instigating this unrest;

04) Coincidentally, that 'foot-in-the-mouth' spokes person of State Dept. - who has no business on this issue - has lost her tongue, a few days ago, which was snubbed by the GoI, instantly;

05) None of the above factors make this spontaneous mass movement, against corruption, any less serious to be ignored or branded as anti-national!

06) Only fools who live in their own paradises would believe the those who came out onto the city centres, across India aren't the voters who voted this UPA into power in 2009 and would vote in the 2014 elections!!!

ANTI-CORRUPTION MOVEMENT - From Ground Zero Day 2: 'Are you with Anna or not?

From Ground Zero Day 2: `Are you with Anna or not?

Biplob Ghosal/Kamna Arora

A day after the arrest and subsequent 'release' of Anna Hazare, the overwhelming support extended by the hoi polloi to India’s biggest anti-corruption icon is in fact swelling by the minute.

Thousands of protesters, who started the march from India Gate to support Anna Hazare, have now reached the Parliament Street near Jantar Mantar, where Prashant Bhushan and Medha Patkar and Swami Agnivesh addressed the crowd. Bhushan said that "Annaji is continuing his fast inside Tihar and he has urged the protesters to protest peacefully.

Patkar energised the crowd with halla bol slogans as the people have been stopped to move to Parliament.

Chanting slogans at the top of their voices, the crowd’s vigour is unprecedented. Hours after PM Manmohan Singh defended the Delhi Police action against team Anna, the crowd seems to be in no mood to stop the protest. The credibility of the government seems to be in serious doubt since the people have started chanting slogans that have changed from pro-Anna to anti-govt in nature.

Earlier, protesting since Tuesday’s night outside Tihar Jail, 65-year-old Anil Kumar was not willing to leave. “I will continue to be here until Annaji is released and all the conditions are met. I request police to arrest me so that I can join him in jail.”

Notably, the India's well-acclaimed social activist decided to remain inside the premises of Tihar Jail despite being released on Tuesday night, demanding an unconditional release and permission to launch his fast at Jai Prakash Narain Park in Central Delhi. As Anna continued his fast-unto-death inside the jail, his supporters thronged outside. From as young as five to as old as 80, the zeal and fervor of Anna’s supporters are remarkable.

Moved by the Anna Hazare's fast and enthusiasm of his supporters, people residing in the neighbourhood of Tihar jail could be seen arranging breakfast and tea for those who stayed outside the jail overnight.

Anna movement unites the nation

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: The Government’s worst fears appear to have come true as the nation gears up for a prolonged fight against corruption, rallying behind Anna Hazare, the 74-year-old frail man from a nondescript village in Maharashtra, who has brought the all powerful Delhi to a standstill.

The veteran Gandhian is adamant on his demands – which the government is not willing to concede. Not just the government, the opposition parties are also yet to support all provisions of Anna’s version of the Lokpal Bill.

With an end to the deadlock out of sight, several protest marches have been planned across the country on Wednesday.

Team Anna has called for a march from India Gate to Parliament starting 4 pm. In Mumbai, a grand torch rally has been planned in Andheri (W) in the evening at 6 pm.

Maharashtra has been the hotbed of the protests as the 74-year-old Gandhian's native village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district is observing a bandh. Protesting farmers also came out on the roads along with their cattle and blocked traffic.

Thousands have braved continuous rains to throng the streets in support of Anna. The Chhatrasal Stadium where Anna supporters have been put up following their detention for flouting prohibitory rules has turned into a hotbed of peaceful protests.

Many more Anna supporters have converged at the Tihar Jail and are shouting slogans in support of Anna, who has refused to come of jail till he gets unconditional permission to hold a protest fast.

UNDECLARED EMERGENCY: From Ground Zero: I am also Anna!

From Ground Zero: I am also Anna

New Delhi: Just a day after Democratic India celebrated its ‘65th Independence Day’, swarms of people from all walks of life chanting slogans of ‘Vande Mataram and ‘Bharat Mata’ were seen flocking to the Pragati Maidan in Delhi on Tuesday, to protest against the arrest of Anna Hazare, fondly called the “modern Mahatma”.

In the second round of the Anna Vs Government showdown, people galvanised in huge numbers to show their concern and anger against the inefficiency of the Congress government to tackle the deep rooted menace of corruption.

While talking to Zeenews.com, human rights activist Dilip Puri shared his grievances. Puri said that Lokpal Bill should be passed as it is for the benefit of the people. General masses should be made aware of its clauses which keeps the citizen’s woes as its core objective; only then a revolution can be brought in true sense.

Hitting out at the government he said, “Government is not trying to understand the general public’s sentiments and is not even providing a platform to raise their concerns.”

On being asked as to what extent he will go to support this movement, Puri replied, “We are ready for arrest but the Delhi Police is not actually arresting people, they are just taking them away and dropping them at Karkardooma, Nangloi and other places just to scatter the crowd.”

Sangeeta Saxena, a member of the Fight Against Corruption campaign, expressed her outrage by asking, “Are we better than Kasab? It seems like Kasab is not a terrorist but a citizen of this country and Anna Hazare is corrupt. Who is better?”

BK Nirmal from Delhi, who supported Jai Prakash Narayan at the time of Emergency, said he is back again to join the anti-corruption drive.

PTI / The Hindu / NEW DELHI, August 17, 2011.

Supporters of Anna Hazare wait outside a gate of Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Wednesday. The 74-year-old social activist was about to come out of the prison anytime now, according to Swami Agnivesh.
Supporters of Anna Hazare wait outside a gate of Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Wednesday. The 74-year-old social activist was about to come out of the prison anytime now, according to Swami Agnivesh.

The standoff in Tihar Jail is likely to be over with social activist Anna Hazare set to come out of the prison after a night-long protest demanding that he be allowed to launch his indefinite strike from a venue of his choice in the capital.

Mr. Hazare, who was ordered to be released on Tuesday night after a day-long detention before he was to begin his fast demanding strong Lokpal, had refused to come out of the prison unless he was allowed to protest from JP Park without conditions.

Activists Kiran Bedi and Swami Agnivesh announced to the hundreds of supporters waiting since last night that the 74-year-old Gandhian was about to come out of the prison anytime now.

“The government has bowed down. We will have to be prepared to go to JP Park in a peaceful manner,” Swami Agnivesh said.

Solidarity with Anna

Activists Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and Medha Patkar on Wednesday joined hundreds of protestors expressing solidarity with Anna Hazare outside Tihar Jail while a large number of the Gandhian’s supporters took out marches across the city.

Mr. Hazare’s supporters in huge numbers also gathered outside Chhatrasal Stadium, which was converted into a special detention area, Wednesday morning and shouted anti-corruption slogans demanding that the Gandhian be allowed to protest at J.P. Park in New Delhi.

Ms. Bedi, who was detained on Tuesday and released later, and Mr. Agnivesh arrived outside Tihar Jail at around 11:30 a.m. where a swarm of protestors had gathered since Tuesday night to express solidarity with Mr. Hazare.

Ms. Patkar, who reached the protest spot early in the day, was granted permission to meet Mr. Hazare after being initially refused to enter the premises.

Ms. Patkar approached jail authorities seeking permission to meet Mr. Hazare, who was lodged in the administrative block after he refused to be released, but was initially denied. However, later the authorities changed their stand and allowed her.

They thought they have arrested him but the overwhelming support against that unethical arrest has arrested the UPA Government.
