NEW DELHI: Successful mass movements often offer fascinating insights into mobilisation of common people. And when ordinary people involved in them find creative ways to get their message across, they coin slogans that are both inventive and engaging. The ongoing anti-corruption movement is no exception.
One of the most common slogans doing the rounds on Thursday was "Anna nahin ye aandhi hai, desh ka dooja Gandhi hai" (Anna is a storm. He's the country's second Gandhi). Where is Rahul Gandhi?").
Late in the afternoon, schoolchildren of all ages made a beeline for Tihar jail. "Twinkle twinkle little star, Anna is a superstar," the chant went. Putting their street-lingo to best use, some carried "Anna Rocks!" placards. A few who seemed to have bunked school announced, "School nahin jaayenge, bhrashtachaar mitayenge" (We won't go to school, we'll eradicate corruption).
