Breaking a 120-year-old-tradition of never going on a strike, around 1,200 dabbawallas struck work for the first time and marched from Churchgate station in Mumbai to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus of Mumbai in a grand show of solidarity with the Jan Lokpal cause.

“We are from the Warkari community [Vaishnava religious movement]. This is ishwar seva [service to god]. We don't want anything. We get paid for the work we do. We have no allegiance with any political party. There was no selfish aim to our act. We always do team work. Here Anna Hazare is staking his life for others, for the poor. We therefore did it to support him,” Raghunath Medge, director of the Mumbai Dabbawalla Sanghatana, told The Hindu over telephone.

The dabbawallas chose Friday so that their customers would be least inconvenienced.

New Delhi: Lawyers on Wednesday observed a one-day token strike in all the six district courts in the capital protesting the arrest of Anna Hazare and non-inclusion of judiciary in the Lokpal bill, interrupting the proceedings in the 2G scam.

The striking lawyers entered the court room and requested Special CBI Judge OP Saini and defence counsel to adjourn the proceedings for the day in support of their token strike.

The Special court, which was scheduled to hear arguments on charges against Asif Balwa and Rajeev Agarwal, Directors of a DB group company and accused in the 2G spectrum scam, adjourned the matter till 1 pm due to the strike.

The Co-ordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi, has condemned the government's act in arresting Anna, saying it was done to curtail his fundamental right to protest against rampant corruption.

"The strike in all the six district courts is successful and no work is being done at all. We will organize a 'dharna' today at Tiz Hazari Courts complex from 12 noon to 2 pm," Sanjeev Nassiar, Secretary General of the committee, said.

Irom Chanu Sharmila, the Manipur-based poet and activist is entering her eleventh year on hunger strike, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Manipur and other Northeastern States.

Imphal, November 2 (Agencies): Manipur rights activist Irom Sharmila Tuesday completed 10 years of her hunger strike to protest alleged rights violations by security forces, but still refused to break the fast.

Sharmila, who earned the sobriquet 'Iron Lady of Manipur', launched an indefinite hunger strike Nov 2, 2000 after she was witness to the killing of 10 people by the army at a bus stop near her home in Malom, a village on the outskirts of capital Imphal, the day before.

Three days into the hunger strike, police arrested her on charges of attempted suicide, sent her to a prison hospital and put her on nasal drip. She is now lodged at an isolated cabin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital here.

Sharmila is campaigning for the repeal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) that provides unlimited powers to the security forces to shoot on sight and arrest anybody without a warrant.

At 38, she looks frail and emaciated, but the resolve in her eyes and intent to continue with her campaign has become even stronger.

Hyderabad: The Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising TRS, BJP and various pro-Telangana organisations would launch a strike from Wednesday in support of the separate statehood demand.

The Telangana supporters would hold a rally from the Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram to Indira Park in Hyderabad and hold a dharna there, JAC Convener M Kodandaram told reporters on Tuesday evening.

The strike by all sections of people envisages government employees striking work (from September 5) while others taking up different forms of protests, JAC leaders said.

The JAC leaders would undertake district, mandal and village level meetings from Thursday to gear up the people for the strike.

The JAC had earlier announced that the Andhra Pradesh government employees in Telangana, who are supporters of the JAC, would begin strike from August 17. It later announced that the strike of the employees would begin from September 5.

Mumbai:  Extending support to social activist Anna Hazare over the Lokpal Bill issue, Mumbai's famous dabbawalas (lunch-box carriers) have said there would be no service on August 16 - the day he proposes to start his hunger strike.

"We support Anna Hazare in his fight for a strong Lokpal Bill. On August 16, when Annaji would go on a fast, we have decided to show our support by asking our customers not to give tiffins for delivery," said the president of Mumbai Jeevan Dabbawala Association, Sopan Mare.

About 4,500-5,000 dabbawalas transport some 2, 00, 000 homemade lunch packs everyday across Mumbai.

Banking operations were partially impacted throughout the country on Friday following a daylong strike by public sector and old private sector bank employees in protest against the proposed and ongoing reforms in the sector.

According to reports from various centres, particularly hard-hit were some of the eastern States such as West Bengal and Bihar, while the impact was partial in western States such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella forum of nine trade unions, was in protest against reforms which include dilution of government shareholding in public sector banks, increase in voting rights to shareholders and outsourcing of jobs.

Andhra Pradesh government employees in Telangana region would undertake a relay hunger strike here on Wednesday in support of the demand for separate statehood to the region.

The relay hunger strike will be held at Indira Park from 10am to 5pm, the Telangana Non-Gazetted Officers association and other unions said today.

The Telangana Employees JAC has already served a notice to the government that it would launch an indefinite general strike from August 17 primarily in support of the demand for creation of a separate state.

It has also submitted a charter of demands that include appointing a judicial commission to look into irregularities in appointments and deputations in violation of zonal regulations.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet sub-committee on employees today decided to invite the Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee (JAC) for talks on August 5 to resolve their pending grievances and avert a strike.

Meanwhile, pro-Telangana groups today decided to postpone the shut down proposed to be held on August 5 on the Hyderabad free zone issue.

The student groups had called for the bandh in support of their demand for deletion of Clause 14 (F) of the Presidential Order of 1975, that makes Hyderabad a free zone for employment in police department.

The 13-day strike at the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI) Manesar plant in Gurgaon was called off late on Thursday night following a deal brokered by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda between the workers and the management.

As part of the deal, MSI will reinstate all the sacked 11 workers and take a lenient approach on enforcing no-work-no- pay rule of eight day's salary cut for every single day of the strike.

On the other hand, the workers have conceded to the management's demand of not allowing the formation of a second union in the company.

"Agreement has been signed and workers have decided to call off the strike. They will resume work from tomorrow (Friday)", Haryana Labour Secretary Sarban Singh said.

He said the company has decided to reinstate all the 11 sacked employees and a disciplinary inquiry will be initiated against them.

The losses during the 13 days strike, if not recouped in the coming days, the same would reflect in their Financials.

The country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India’s Manesar facility continues to be completely shut down, with a workers’ strike at the plant entering its 10th day on Monday.

“The talks are going on, but the strike is still continuing. The production at the plant is stopped,” a company spokesperson told PTI.

In the morning, shares of the company were trading 1.19 per cent down at Rs. 1,215.15 apiece on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Around 2,000 workers at the plant have been on strike since June 4, resulting in a loss of about Rs 390 crore for the company on account of a 7,800—unit hit in output till Saturday.

The factory had its weekly—off on Sunday.

The striking workers are demanding the recognition of a new union —— Maruti Suzuki Employees Union —— formed by those working at the Manesar plant, among other things.

Heavy loss to the firm; they should settle, amicably, with the striking workers and the sooner the better for both!
