Kolkata: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said India has the potential to achieve nine percent growth, provided public-private partnership (PPP) model was optimally utilised.
"There is no reason why we cannot achieve a nine percent growth rate. Half of the population is in the 20s, their productivity and employability can be increased drastically. With effective use of PPP, we can achieve the desired level of growth," Mukherjee said at an award function in Kolkata on Saturday night.
"We have the potential of achieving more if both inside and outside stakeholders work with common commitment," he added. The finance minister expressed satisfaction over the performance of the economy in the aftermath of the global meltdown.
"The Indian economy recorded just a brief pause during the global economic meltdown and since then it has recorded a steady growth of six percent."
Mukherjee said with India slated to be one of the top three economies in the next decade, huge infrastructural investment will be made.
"As per the recommendation of the Planning Commission, around $1 trillion would be invested in infrastructure which in turn will boost the economy."
He also expressed happiness over the performance of Indian exports.

With all eyes on the global situation, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said India’s macroeconomy was moving in a positive direction and hoped international commodity prices would decline, helping the government tame inflation and cut subsidies.

Mr. Mukherjee maintained that India’s economic fundamentals were strong and capable of meeting any challenge posed by the downgrade of the U.S. economy and the crisis in some Eurozone nations.

“I would like to emphasise that some of the investment banks have upgraded India to market weight, that means the basic fundamentals are strong and macroeconomy recovery is moving toward a positive direction,” he told reporters, referring to Monday’s Goldman Sachs report.

The Minister said the U.S. downgrade has created some problems for India, but the country could handle any situation arising out of international developments.

“The challenge is there, but we have the capabilities of facing these challenges,” Mr. Mukherjee said. “Collectively, with the efforts of all concerned, particularly with the cooperation of the RBI, we will be able to face the challenges,” he added.

Till the Indian Oil Prices too are reduced in tune with the falling Global Oil Prices, no positive impact on the Indian Commodities would happen and till such time no hope for Indian Economy!

Pakistan claims to have arrested Indian trying to enter Balochistan!

Anita Joshua, The Hindu / ISLAMABAD, August 7, 2011.

Pakistani security forces claim to have caught an Indian trying to enter the country from the Chaman border post in Balochistan on Friday. A photograph of the man — said to be from Amritsar — was released to the media, though no official has been quoted by name in the news reports.
According to the unnamed officials quoted, the man entered Pakistan from the Friendship Gate at Chaman without proper travel documents. He is under interrogation and one newspaper report said that he began posing as a mad man on being nabbed.
The media reports also suggested that the ‘Indian national' could be a spy. Pakistan has always alleged an Indian hand in the unrest in Balochistan. Islamabad is also suspicious of the Indian presence in Afghanistan and the dominant narrative here claims that India has a number of facilitation centres along the Durand Line; purportedly to create trouble in Pakistan.

Employees of various banks hold placards as they stage a demonstration during a daylong strike, in Kolkata on Friday.

Banking operations were partially impacted throughout the country on Friday following a daylong strike by public sector and old private sector bank employees in protest against the proposed and ongoing reforms in the sector.
According to reports from various centres, particularly hard-hit were some of the eastern States such as West Bengal and Bihar, while the impact was partial in western States such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella forum of nine trade unions, was in protest against reforms which include dilution of government shareholding in public sector banks, increase in voting rights to shareholders and outsourcing of jobs.

‘We must have certain parameters which are common to both the jurisdictions'
The first meeting of the Australia-India Education Council saw extensive discussion on mobility of students between the two nations.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said student mobility could be ensured only if there was assurance regarding quality of education and if qualifications were recognised. Terming mobility of students as key to any successful collaboration between the two countries, the Minister said the two sides agreed on a number of issues during the bilateral talks.
About the issues under discussion with the visiting Australian delegation, Mr. Sibal said: “A whole range of issues were discussed between the vice-chancellors to ensure that quality education is imparted in the university system to allow student mobility.”
The Australia-India Education Council was conceived in April 2008, and that dream has been realised today, the Minister said, adding that the interaction of vice-chancellors was going to be an annual event.
The delegation, led by Senator Chris Evans, comprised 15 vice-chancellors from different universities in Australia, including Premier of South Australia Mike Rann.
About the Indo-Australian collaboration, Mr. Sibal said: “Essentially, we are talking about collaboration in the field of education. We must have certain parameters which are common to both the jurisdictions (in India and Australia).”
“The other area where both countries are extremely keen to collaborate is in the area of vocation... In an aging population, countries will need young people with skills and quality to immigrate to those countries. India can provide as a center for such quality human resource,” he said.

INDO-RUSSIAN TIES: Russia’s move to ease visa regime with India!

Vladimir Radyuhin / The Hindu / MOSCOW, August 1, 2011.

The Russian government is moving to endorse a simpler visa regime with India in an effort to facilitate trade and business contacts between the two countries.
At its meeting on Tuesday chaired by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the Russian government will discuss a ratification bill for the Inter-Governmental Agreement between India and Russia on Simplification of Requirements for Mutual Travels of Certain Categories of Citizens, the government news agencyItar-Tass reported on Monday. The government is expected to send the pact to Parliament for ratification.
The agreement, signed in December 2010, will simplify the procedure for issuing six-month visas for 90-day visits by citizens of Russia and India who have valid passports, Itar-Tass said. It will also provide for issuing in some cases of five-year multiple visas.
“This will benefit travel between our two countries by businessmen and tourists,” Indian Ambassador to Russia, Ajai Malhotra said.
The Indian embassy last month cut from 14 to three working days the time visas are issued to Russians. The validity of visas has been increased from the earlier one-to-three months to six months, with triple or multiple entries being allowed, compared to a single or double entry earlier. Additionally, the embassy is now granting a one year multiple entry business visa instead of three or six months visa with a single/double entry.

INDIAN SLUT WALK: The Walk & the talk - Jayanthi Natarajan!

www.greentekindika.com
Have you read, “Mayhem of the Miserables!” available @ http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/52075

I was not particularly astonished to find that the word “slut” does not have a male equivalent. In many languages other than English, there is no male word for “prostitute” or “widow”. Thus the entire debate over the “slut walk” is obviously centred on the rights and current disempowerment of women. As we are all now aware, a particularly stupid Canadian policeman Michael Sanguinetti told an outraged student audience in Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, that women in order to avoid being victimised should “avoid dressing like sluts”. And the outrage spread all over the world with women organising “slut walks” in order to “reclaim” the word.
The caveats I begin with are very simple. The first is that it passes my comprehension why anybody would even want to “reclaim” the word slut, with its unmistakably pejorative implication? Being called a slut is quite simply an insult and has little to do with the way you dress. It’s not quite the same as the universal pejorative “bastard” which is meant to abuse a particular person, but actually questions his parentage, but the import is similar. In my experience men (and some women) call a woman a slut for a variety of reasons motivated by jealousy, frustration, chauvinism, stupidity, or rather simply, a lack of imagination. Thus the stated objective of organising a “slut walk” to reclaim the word seems extremely counterproductive to me. However, other issues that arise out of this protest are far more basic and very important.
My second and less important rather trivial astonishment has to do with the fact that a stray comment made by chauvinistic Michael Sanguinetti should have reverberated around the world as if it were a precious pearl of wisdom, or on the other hand, the worst thing anybody has ever said about women. Millions of nasty remarks about women are made every second of the day, and it is amazing to me why this one has generated so much debate.
