New Delhi: In an embarrassing goof-up External Affairs Minister SM Krishna gave a confused reply in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday when an MP asked him about the release of Pakistani prisoner Dr Mohammed Khaleel Chisti who is currently in Ajmer jail.

Krishna referred to Dr Chisti as being held in a Pakistani jail and went on to declare Pakistan has been asked to show leniency in his case. He made the statement while replying to a question by JD-U MP Shivanand Tiwari, who had asked about Dr Chisti and what the Government was doing to release him.

Krishna replied during the Question Hour claiming that Dr Chisti was in a Pakistani jail and the Pakistani government should consider this case on "humanitarian grounds".

With the entire house puzzled, he added that Dr Chisti was confined to a wheel chair and was more than 80 years old, and he was sure that the Government of Pakistan would take a lenient view about the case.

CPI (M) MP Brinda Karat interrupted the minister and pointed out Tiwari was referring to the case of Dr Chisti in an Indian jail.

“I think you have misunderstood the question entirely sir,” said Karat.

Finally, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had to intervene, saying he had asked Home Minister P Chidambaram to contact the Rajasthan government on the Dr Chisti issue.

01)  Last time when PTI reported of misplacing papers during the Question Hour and failed to answer properly, he threated it with Defamation Case;

02) Last Month, when Hina Rabbani Kar has visited he had to rely on written speech, again fumbling for right papers;

03)  Inability to grasp an issue or to register a question is a sure sign of Senility!

04)  UPA leadership should, seriously, consider reliveing him of this very important portifolio, at the earliest!!

05) On account of his seniority, if they wish to retain his services, he can be appointed as a Governor!!!

PTI / The Hindu / NEW DELHI, August 6, 2011.

For reporting that he was absent-minded when Speaker asked him to make a statement.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Friday served a legal notice on the Press Trust of India (PTI) for reporting that he appeared absent-minded when he was asked to make a statement by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Thursday.

PTI had reported that when the Speaker called Mr. Krishna to make a statement on the situation in Sri Lanka, he was not in his seat, having been engaged in a conversation with some members on the aisle.

The report said that as Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar drew his attention to the Speaker’s direction, Mr. Krishna failed to immediately find a copy of the statement in his file. The staff of the Lok Sabha Secretariat then provided him with a copy.

Late at night, a senior official of the External Affairs Ministry called up PTI and said Mr. Krishna, handling questions in the Rajya Sabha, had handed over certain papers to his deputy, Preneet Kaur, meant for his statement in the Lok Sabha. When asked to make the statement, he had to get the papers from Ms. Kaur, the official said, arguing that it was not a case of absent-mindedness. This clarification was then added to the original report.

However, in a legal notice served on the news agency, a lawyer representing Mr. Krishna said the report was “completely false” and “malicious” and demanded a public apology “along with an advertisement.”

Syrian Minister briefs Krishna on ground realities in Damascus
Amid escalating violence in Syria and international media reports of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) scheduling a discussion on the situation, India on Monday heard out Damascus and asked it to rein in its security forces.
Syria has sent out envoys all over the world to argue that elements linked to the Salafists in the Middle East are behind the violence and the government is willing to open talks with opposition groups. But the Opposition, backed by amateur videos and phone calls amidst a media blackout, has claimed that a heavy Syrian assault on Sunday took a toll of many lives in at least three cities.
A rights group has put the death toll since the unrest began at over 1,500.
As part of the Syrian government's exercise, Vice-Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad briefed External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on the ground realities.
According to an External Affairs Ministry statement, Mr. Krishna urged the Bashar Al-Assad government to exercise restraint, abjure violence and expedite implementation of political reforms taking into account the aspirations of the people. This was reiterated by Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed at a separate meeting with Mr. Mekdad.

WIKILEAKS - Pak Cables: Once upon a time, Qureshi on Kashmir!

 SINGING A DIFFERENT TUNE: As Pakistan's Foreign Minister from April 2008 to February 2011, Shah Mahmood Qureshi - seen in this file picture with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna (left) - was at first conciliatory on Kashmir but later adopted a more rigid stand on this issue.
SINGING A DIFFERENT TUNE: As Pakistan's Foreign Minister from April 2008 to February 2011, Shah Mahmood Qureshi - seen in this file picture with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna (left) - was at first conciliatory on Kashmir but later adopted a more rigid stand on this issue - PTI.

Days after he was designated the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi told U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard A. Boucher that India-Pakistan relations could not be held hostage to the issue of Kashmir alone.
It is rare for a Pakistani leader to advocate, even in a closed-door meeting, that India-Pakistan ties should not viewed through the prism of Kashmir alone.
The Pakistan military and successive political establishments have consistently argued that Kashmir is the core issue between India and Pakistan, and that without a resolution of the dispute there can be no meaningful progress in ties.
Yet, after a few months in office, Mr. Qureshi too was calling Kashmir a ‘core issue.'
But in an April 2008 interaction with the U.S. diplomat, Mr. Qureshi maintained that while Pakistan should respect the concerns of the Kashmiris, its relations with India could not be held ‘hostage' to one issue.
