Syrian Minister briefs Krishna on ground realities in Damascus
Amid escalating violence in Syria and international media reports of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) scheduling a discussion on the situation, India on Monday heard out Damascus and asked it to rein in its security forces.
Syria has sent out envoys all over the world to argue that elements linked to the Salafists in the Middle East are behind the violence and the government is willing to open talks with opposition groups. But the Opposition, backed by amateur videos and phone calls amidst a media blackout, has claimed that a heavy Syrian assault on Sunday took a toll of many lives in at least three cities.
A rights group has put the death toll since the unrest began at over 1,500.
As part of the Syrian government's exercise, Vice-Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad briefed External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on the ground realities.
According to an External Affairs Ministry statement, Mr. Krishna urged the Bashar Al-Assad government to exercise restraint, abjure violence and expedite implementation of political reforms taking into account the aspirations of the people. This was reiterated by Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed at a separate meeting with Mr. Mekdad.
