Lahore: Gunmen abducted an American man from his home in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Saturday, officials said, an unusually brazen raid that showed the threat to foreigners living in the militancy-wracked country.

The American embassy identified the victim as Warren Weinstein. A man by that name serves as the Pakistan country director for JE Austin Associates, a development contractor that works with the aid arm of the American government, according to a profile on the LinkedIn networking website.

The profile says that Weinstein is based in Lahore and had been in Pakistan for seven years. Calls to the company in the United States were not immediately answered.

According to Pakistani police, between eight and 10 assailants broke into the American's house in an upscale neighbourhood in Lahore after persuading the guards to open the gate by saying they wanted to give them food — an act of sharing common during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Police officer Attiqur Rehman said the motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Foreigners have frequently been targeted by militants in Pakistan in recent years, but it is unusual for the assailants to stage such a raid on a victim's home. Also, kidnappings for ransom are common in Pakistan, though most of the victims are Pakistani.

Abductions are usually carried out by criminal gangs, though ransoms are also believed to help fund militant groups.

The Pakistani Taliban claim to be currently holding two people from Switzerland kidnapped earlier this summer while they were travelling through a remote and dangerous southwestern region.

Americans in Pakistan are considered specially at risk from militant attack because the insurgents oppose Islamabad's alliance with Washington and the US-led war in Afghanistan. US diplomats, aid workers and others are urged to take strong security precautions.

Two girls, hailing from different parts of the district, were allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped for several days and one of them was left in an unconscious state in front of National Commission for Women's office in Delhi, police said today.

An 18-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped on July 19 from Vijaynagar area by a group of youths when she had gone to purchase books, police said.

According to the complaint lodged by mother of the girl yesterday, the victim was kept on some sedatives for over a week and was allegedly gang-raped repeatedly by them in different parts of Haridwar and Delhi, police said.

On July 25, she was left in front of her house in Ghaziabad in an inebriated condition, the police said adding that, after gaining her senses she narrated the whole story.

Medical examination has confirmed the rape and a case has been registered and investigation are on, they said.

Bangladeshi police said on Thursday they were investigating the case of a man forced to parade naked through his village with a brick tied to his penis as punishment for kidnapping and marrying a minor.

The punishment was meted out Saturday to the 30-year-old man by the local council in a village 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Dhaka.

Police said he had kidnapped and then forcibly married a 12-year-old girl, who later managed to escape.

"The council chief and some village elders beat him and made him parade with a brick tied to his penis at a river ghat (steps) under the full gaze of at least 200 people," police sub-inspector Binoy Krishna Kar said.

Village courts are legal in Bangladesh but only empowered to settle disputes related to land ownership, inheritance and other minor issues. They are proscribed from handing down physical punishment.

San Francisco:  Jaycee Dugard, the California woman kidnapped in 1991 and held captive for nearly two decades, talked through tears about both the pain and determination she felt as she gave birth to her captor's child in his backyard while she was still just a girl herself.

Dugard was clear and composed throughout the interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer on her show "Primetime" that aired Sunday night, but grew emotional when she talked about seeing the first of two girls fathered by Phillip Garrido.

When Sawyer asked how old she was at the time of the birth in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Antioch she said "14" with a small, incredulous laugh and a shake of her head.

"It was very painful," said Dugard, now 31, as tears welled in her eyes. "She was beautiful. I felt like I wasn't alone anymore."

She said she didn't know how she could protect the child, but said "I knew I could never let anything happen to her."

Dugard appeared younger than her 31 years as she talked to Sawyer on a couch and on a porch at her California home. The blond hair she had in now-familiar photographs from her childhood is now reddish-brown, and she wore a red sweater and a necklace with a pinecone charm on it, representing the last thing she touched before her 18-year captivity.

The interview came on the eve of Dugard's memoir about her time in captivity, "A Stolen Life," which will be released this week.

Truly courageous women or girl of her age to have survived this kind of ordeal!
