ROME (AP) - Suspected regime loyalists kidnapped four Italian journalists and killed their local driver in Libya as the group traveled down a highway to Tripoli on Wednesday, the Italian foreign ministry said.

The ministry said the four were abducted on a stretch of highway between Zawiya, a town 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Tripoli, and the Libyan capital.

Those kidnapped include two reporters from Milan daily Corriere della Sera, one from Turin's La Stampa and one from Avvenire, the daily of the Italian Catholic bishops Conference, the ministry said.

Corriere della Sera said on its website that the journalists were first stopped by a group of civilians, who then "handed them over to military men faithful to Gadhafi who brought them to a private house," and that first contact from the Avvenire journalist came hours later.

Avvenire's foreign news editor, Fabio Carminati, told Sky TG24 TV in a telephone interview from the paper's Milan office that its reporter, Claudio Monici, called the newsroom to say all four journalists were OK and had been taken to a house.

Barely three days after Sri Lanka’s top cop, Inspector General N.K.Ilangakoon, was asked to investigate the attack on a senior journalist of a Tamil newspaper based in Jaffna, he submitted an interim report on the incident.

Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan, 59, the news editor of Uthayan was beaten by unidentified men with iron bars and left for dead near his home, on Friday. This was the second such attack on anUthayan journalist in the past two months. A reporter from the paper S. Kavitharan was attacked on May 28. Uthayansupports the Tamil National Alliance, the umbrella organisation of Tamil parties, which openly supported the Tamil Tigers earlier.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notices to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary and Director General of Police regarding the arrest of a senior journalist who reported about the death of deputy CMO Y.S. Sachan.

Issuing notices, the NHRC asked the Chief Secretary and DGP to submit detailed reports in the matter within a week.

A spokesperson said the Commission received two complaints regarding the arrest of bureau chief of a Hindi TV channel after he reported about Sachan’s death saying that the injuries could not be self-inflicted.

In Mayaland most crimes are perpetrated by the ruling party local leaders or legislatures / MPs or even ministers and to cover-up those crimes they strangulate the victims, their families, friends and journalists, who report on these issues!

• Journalists in Pakistan face danger all the time, said a daily on Tuesday, noting this 'climate of threats to journalists is serious and troubling'.
  An editorial in the Daily Times referred to the murder of journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad 'to faceless murderers because of his hard-hitting reporting.
  "It is alleged that the ISI, Pakistan's premier intelligence agency, is behind his death.
  "Last week Waqar Kiani, who works for the Guardian, was badly beaten up by men in police uniform in Islamabad who wanted to 'make an example' of him."
  It said that Kiani was attacked less than a week after he went public with his account of how he had been picked up and tortured in 2008 by "suspected Pakistani intelligence agents".

Taking lessons from the murder of investigative journalist J Dey in Mumbai recently, government today said it was planning to bring a central law to protect journalists.

Law minister M Veerappa Moily said that he has already directed the legislative department to prepare a draft bill to protect journalists and their properties, such as cameras.

"Dey's murder is a matter of grave concern. We need to have a sense of security among journalists," he said.

We already have enough criminal laws and one more law is not going to deter the mafia to kill more Journalists.

What we need a strong political will to eradicate the mafia and that is possible only when politicos, bureaucrats, businesses, stop pattronising them.

Journalists Associations here today began their relay hunger strike to press for a CBI probe into the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

On Monday, mediapersons had taken out a protest march to demand the immediate arrest of the killers.

The Maharashtra government had assured to accept their demand to bring in a law to protect journalists although it refused to hand over the probe to CBI, and said the Mumbai police should be given a fair chance to investigate the case.

01) This is a classic instance of the Accused Investigating the case;  No police investigation can be trusted when their own ilk is accused, especially in Mumbai.  

02) Even the politicos are involved, hence the Prithviraj Chavan's repeated attempts to divert the attention of the public, from the Police, by pointing fingers at the Oil Mafia, which kingpin has been jailed for the last one year.

03) Not that jailed dons wouldn't organise crimes like revenge-killings, kidnaps, extortions & murders but, he doesn't have any immediate provocation from Mr. Dey, to do so.  

04) Whereas, the stories that he was working on, at the time of his killing were said to be about the Police-Mafia Nexus and that of Builders-Politicos-Bureaucrats, in connection with the scores of thousands of crores being invested in the Mumbai's slum development programme.  

05) Only they have a valid motive to arrange for the assassination of Mr. Dey.

06) Another important aspect that is being missed out is that this was a 'Day-Light Murder', suggesting an open warning to all Investigative Journalists who might emulate the slain Journalist passion for Investigative Reporting, in future.


07)  Only a CBI enquiry can be trusted to be unbiased and free of flaws.

Freedom is important, so is responsibility. In countries like India, the media have a responsibility to fight backward ideas such as casteism and communalism, and help the people fight poverty and other social evils.

Freedom of the press and journalistic ethics is an important topic today in India — with the word ‘press' encompassing the electronic media also. There should be a serious discussion on the topic. That discussion should include issues of the responsibilities of the press, since the media have become very prominent and very powerful.

In India, freedom of the press has been treated as part of the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, vide Brij Bhushan and Another vs. The State of Delhi, AIR 1950 SC 129 and Sakal Papers (P) Ltd vs. Union of India, AIR 1962 SC 305, among others. However, as mentioned in Article 19(2), reasonable restrictions can be placed on this right, in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the state, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, defamation or incitement to an offence. Hence, freedom of the media is not an absolute freedom.

The importance of the freedom of the press lies in the fact that for most citizens the prospect of personal familiarity with newsworthy events is unrealistic. In seeking out news, the media therefore act for the public at large. It is the means by which people receive free flow of information and ideas, which is essential to intelligent self-governance, that is, democracy.

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani reporter who investigated terrorism and was found slain after telling a rights activist he'd been threatened by intelligence agents was buried Wednesday. Fellow journalists vowed his killing would not silence them.

Syed Saleem Shahzad wrote for the Asia Times Online and other publications. He delved into topics that were often sensitive in Pakistan, where journalists face threats from insurgents as well as a security establishment that operates largely outside the law.

"We will not shut our voices down," said Azhar Abbas, a prominent Pakistani journalist. "The journalist community is united on this. We will not stop ".

The whole world is behind the Pak Journalist community in their hour of mourning!
