Lght-to-moderate consumption of wine may actually protect against weight gain.
Light-to-moderate consumption of wine may actually protect against weight gain - AP.

A new study from Spain has suggested that the association between alcohol consumption and body weight may appear only with heavier drinkers, but light—to—moderate consumption of wine may actually protect against weight gain.
Based on the fact that the energy content in 1 gram of alcohol is 29 kJ or 7.1 kcal, excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to weight gain.
However, based on their review, the scientists conclude that, “as positive associations between alcohol and weight gain were mainly found in studies with data on higher levels of drinking, it is possible that an effect on weight gain or abdominal adiposity may only be experienced by heavy drinkers.”
A second conclusion of the authors is that “the type of alcoholic beverage might play an important role in modifying the effect of alcohol consumption on weight gain,” with more favourable effects generally seen among consumers of wine.
The overall conclusions of the authors is that it is currently unclear whether alcohol consumption is a risk factor for weight gain, but if so it appears to occur mainly among heavier drinkers. They also state that “light—to—moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain.”

Fasting is said to bring a host of benefits, provided it's done under medical supervision. Doctors explain how to go about it.

Food is to the body what fuel is to a motor vehicle. It provides energy, helps repair and rejuvenation and confers many other benefits. While excess of food and gluttony is not good, occasional fasting does the body a world of good, provided one undertakes it under medical supervision and follows some basic guidelines. Here's what some doctors have to say on how to go about it.

Does occasional fasting have any benefits?

Dr G. S. Sainani, Director, General Medicine Department, Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai: When one fasts, the digestive organs get rest and all body mechanisms are cleansed. While fasting, the natural process of toxin excretion continues, while influx of new toxins is reduced.  The energy usually used for digestion is redirected to immune function and cell growth. Fasting helps you heal with greater speed, cleanses your liver, kidneys and colon, purifies your blood, helps you lose excess weight and water, flushes out toxins, clear the eyes and tongue and cleanses the breath.

Dr. Issac Mathai, Chairman, Managing and Medical Director, SOUKYA International Holistic Health Centre, Bengaluru: Fasting, even occasionally, helps in de-toxification. Through fasting we restrict digestive activity and so energy is utilised to cleanse different systems. Fasting improves metabolism sharpens the senses, calms the mind, helps lose weight, improves general immunity, improves concentration and mental clarity.

Dr. Kousalya Nathan, Age Management Consultant, Huma Hospitals, Chennai: Fasting, if understood and done under supervision, has tremendous benefits and impacts one at various planes; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Specifically it serves as an aid to effective detoxification, helps in repair and rejuvenation, offers rest to the gastro-intestinal system and promotes mobilisation of excess fat.
The crucial point to note is the difference between fasting and starvation. Research suggests there are major health benefits to calorie restriction. Among other things it slows down the aging process. According to the US National Academy of Sciences, other benefits include stress resistance, increased insulin sensitivity and increased lifespan.

Dr. Sanjiv Rao, Head, Department of Medicine, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru: I am not aware of benefits conferred by occasional fasting. No benefits accrue from consuming calories in a liquid form rather than solid form.

What are the risks if the fast is continued for a long time?

By the CNN Wire Staff / August 2, 2011 -- Updated 0119 GMT (0919 HKT).

The body of Celina Cass, 11, was found in the Connecticut River near the Canadian border Monday.
The body of Celina Cass, 11, was found in the Connecticut River near the Canadian border Monday.

(CNN) -- One week after 11-year-old Celina Cass was last seen, her body was found Monday by divers searching the Connecticut River, New Hampshire Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said.

"We have brought Celina home, not the way we wanted to bring her home," Young said early Monday evening.

The girl's father, Adam Laro, said he was heartbroken and grasping for answers after hearing the news.

"I ... can't believe what's gone on," Laro told HLN's "Nancy Grace" show on Monday night. "I have no fingers to point ... I hope there will be some answers, that's what I'm asking."

Young said that the case -- which had been considered a "missing persons" case -- is now being investigated as a "suspicious death." No one has been arrested or named publicly as a suspect in what is now a criminal investigation.

"Based on what we have seen visually, we are treating it as suspicious," the official said.

Celina's body was found around 10:30 a.m. Monday by divers from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department near a hydroelectric plant outside West Stewartstown, New Hampshire, according to the attorney general's office.

Young described it as a "routine search because of the proximity to (Celina's) home," about one-quarter mile away. The site is also near the Canadian border, where the Connecticut River forms the border between New Hampshire and Vermont.

The discovery came a day after Laro -- who was in the hospital when Celina went missing -- said that he was like others

"wondering where my daughter is" and hoping she was safe.

On Monday night, the father thanked all those authorities and residents who had put their time and effort into finding Celina.

It can be an embarrassment but is not tough to deal with. Here are some simple tips to deal with this problem.
Body odour or ‘bromhidrosis' is caused by a natural process involving sweat that occurs on the skin's surface. Sweat is odourless but, if left on the skin for long, the bacteria that normally live there or those attracted to a‘sticky skin' feed on it and cause bacterial decomposition. This is what causes the unpleasant smell or body odour.

Some areas of the body like the armpits and genitals are more likely to produce the odour as these glands produce proteins and oils that the bacteria feed on. The unpleasant smell is typical to one's own body chemistry. The feet produce their characteristic odour. A humid climate, sweat and closed footwear allow fungi and bacteria to flourish.
