In 2009, his birthday was declared as an international day devoted to public service.
Millions South African schoolchildren sang to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday Monday, leading a worldwide chorus of birthday wishes sent to the anti-apartheid icon.
More than 12 million students sang a special version of “Happy Birthday” before lessons began Monday.
Mandela also received birthday wishes from South African leaders including President Jacob Zuma and from U.S. President Barack Obama. In a statement sent Sunday, Mr. Obama called Mr. Mandela “a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation.”
Mr. Mandela, who has retired from public life, is expected to spend the day with his family in his home village of Qunu, some 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) south of Johannesburg.

Full Story at,At the time of Wednesday’s bombings in Mumbai, crowd-sourcing encyclopedia Wikipedia had listed Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab’s birthday as July 13, 1987, attributing the date to a newspaper article written just days after the 26/11 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Another story purported to describe how the only attacker captured alive by police celebrated his 22nd birthday in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail on September 13.

However, around an hour and a half after Wednesday’s attacks, the birth date was changed in the biographical text on Wikipedia to September 22, 1987, although the July 13 date was left under his photograph, according to the entry’s history page.
Minutes later, the next revision changed the date under the photograph to September 13.
Minutes after that, a Wikipedia contributor identified the changes as online 'vandalism' and changed the date back to July, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Embattled Karuna turns 88 tomorrow

Going through a tough time in his personal and political life, DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi turns 88 on Thursday amid continuing suspense over his daughter Kanimozhi's bail plea and his party coping with the election drubbing.
The decades-old party, founded by Dravidian veteran C N Annadurai, intends to make the birthday an opportunity to redeem itself, with all claims of coming back to power on the basis of performance falling flat and the 2G spectrum scam making a heavy dent on its image.
Kanimozhi and DMK's trusted member and former Telecom Minister A. Raja are cooling their heels in Delhi's Tihar jail for their alleged role in the 2G scam, often described by Karunanidhi's archrival and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as that of ‘Himalayan proportions.’
Really a very bad time, indeed, for the grand old-man!
