New Delhi: The cash-strapped Air India (AI) does not want to pay compensation of Rs 75 lakh to victims of the 2010 Mangalore Air India crash. Air India on Friday appealed against the High Court order despite earlier assurances that there will be no delay in paying compensation.

Air India filed an appeal in the division bench of the Kerala High Court after a single bench of the same court ordered that victims of the crash should be compensated Rs 75 lakh each.

Air India Chairman & MD Arvind Jadhav sacked!

New Delhi: Air India Chairman and MD Arvind Jadhav was sacked on Friday. IAS Officer Rohit Nandan on Friday replaced Jadhav as the Chairman and MD of the premier airline. A recent RTI query had revealed that Arvind Jadhav had been rejected for the position a year ago as he did not have any experience in aviation.

Air India carries an accumulated loss of Rs 18,000 crore, debt of Rs 40,000 crore and working capital loan of Rs 21,000 crore.

Jadhav has been under fire for mishandling of the pilots strike which led to a loss of several crores to Air India. The morale in the airline is very low as most of the employees are unhappy because their salaries have been delayed by over three months.

Oil firms stop fuel supply to Air India, at least 5 flights grounded at Mumbai airport!

New Delhi:  Public sector oil firms have stopped fuel supply to Air India saying that the airline has failed to clear its dues for Tuesday. The oil firms had given Air India time till 5:30 pm today for clearing its dues.

At least five flights were reportedly cancelled within an hour of the announcement at the Mumbai airport.

Since November 2010, the airline is dealing with these oil firms on a cash-and-carry basis.

01)  Only Last Week GoI has released Rs. 1,200/- Crores as a relief;

02)  Anyway, this kind of periodic Governmental Infusion serves no purpose;

03)  If it cannot become profitable on its own, it should be dissolved or handed over to a private airlines through open auction.

CAG slams Air India for Rs. 200 crore loss!

New Delhi:  There seems to be more trouble for the government from its auditor. The Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report on Air India has slammed the airline's management for a lack of foresight and said the decision to buy new aircraft caused a loss of Rs. 200 crore.

The report says the expansion plans of the national carrier were not based on due diligence, and that the new aircraft should have been bought in two phases. 

Air India has rejected the CAG's contention that 'defective contracts' led to losses, saying the new aircraft were intended to meet increased demand. The government also says all decisions to buy aircraft were cleared by an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGOM).

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh - The Hindu.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh told Lok Sabha on Wednesday said whatever might be the outcome of the recommendations of the Group of Ministers (GoM), which is looking into the financial restructuring of Air India, the government would find out ways and means to pay the wages of its employees soon.

Dr. Singh was intervening in the debate on the revival of Air India in the House wherein the members expressed their concern on the plight of the national carrier which could not even pay wages of June and July and productivity-linked incentive since May to the staff.


Though Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy was replying to the question on behalf of Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi, as the latter had sore throat, Dr. Singh intervened when the members continuously highlighted the non-payment of wages as Mr. Narayanasamy’s reply could not pacify them.

The Air India plane that skidded off the runway after a tyre burst while landing during rain at Kanpur airport on Wednesday. 54 passengers and five crew members were on board the plane - PTI.

Noted author Chetan Bhagat had a lucky escape on Wednesday when the AI plane he was flying in skid off the runway in Kanpur.

Bhagat, who was flying in for a talk in the city, tweeted immediately after the plane, carrying 54 passengers and five crew members, went off the path following a tyre burst.
