The ex-wife of Paul McCartney claimed on Wednesday that a journalist at Britain's Mirror Group newspapers admitted hacking into her phone, dragging another tabloid into the long-running scandal.

Heather Mills told the BBC's Newsnight programme that the journalist made the admission in 2001 when he confronted her about an argument she had had with McCartney, who was then still her boyfriend.

Mills said the journalist rang her and "started quoting verbatim the messages from my machine".

"You've obviously hacked my phone and if you do anything with this story -- because they were obviously very private conversations about issues we were having as a couple -- and I said, then I'll go to the police," she challenged him.

She said the journalist responded saying: "OK, OK, yeah we did hear it on your voice messages, I won't run it."

Rupert Murdoch shut down his News of the World tabloid last month after it was revealed that private investigators working for the Sunday paper had hacked into the voicemail of a missing 13-year-old girl who was later found dead.

Former journalists at the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror have already claimed that phone hacking was widespread at their papers too, although Trinity Mirror has insisted its staff act within the law.

‘Defence-related correspondence hacked by Italian cyber crime police'

Sensitive information from the Indian embassy in Moscow appears to have been leaking to a foreign security outfit at least for the past two years, if documents released by an international hackers' group are to be believed.

Defence-related correspondence between the Indian embassy in Moscow and Russian entities seems to have been hacked by the Italian cybercrime police, said a report in the Moscow-based Izvestia daily.

The paper quoted from letters purportedly exchanged between the Indian embassy and Russian companies regarding supply of spares for Russian military aircraft. The letters have been posted online by ‘Anonymous Hackers for AntiSec operation,' a group campaigning against governments and security outfits.

The group said it hacked the documents from the server of Italy's National Anti-Crime Computer Centre for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CNAIPIC).

In a letter dated June 22, 2010, by Deputy Air Attache D.S. Shekhavat to the head of Aviazapchast, a company specialising in the supply of aviation spares, the Indian official complained about delays in the shipment of 15 helicopter engines. A reply from the Aviazapchast representative in India written on the same day was also hacked by the CNAIPIC.

The Izvestia said it had also accessed correspondence of the engine manufacturer NPO Saturn and Ilyushin aircraft building company with the Indian embassy in Moscow and the Indian Air Force headquarters in New Delhi.

The Russian daily draws the conclusion that the Italian cybercrime police was interested in details of Russian-Indian defence cooperation. The CNAIPIC files also targeted correspondence of Russian energy companies.

Embattled CNN host Piers Morgan—whose years as editor of News of the World and the Daily Mirror are coming under increasing scrutiny amid Britain’s phone-hacking and police-bribery scandal—has spent much of the past week denying any involvement in questionable journalistic tactics and lashing out at his critics.

But in a nearly forgotten interview on a BBC radio program two years ago, Morgan admitted to knowing of some of the news- and gossip-gathering practices that are now under investigation by the U.K. government as well as by a Justice Department probe in the United States. He did not specifically admit to the interception or “hacking” of voicemail messages, one of the practices under official investigation since the revelation that News of the World hacked the cellphone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler in 2002.

But two years before the exposure of Fleet Street’s methods rocked the British body politic, Morgan didn’t disagree that that phone-“tapping” and other “down-in-the-gutter” tactics might have been employed in the  attainment of sensational scoops.

In the June 7, 2009, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 of “Desert Island Discs”—in which guests select musical works, books, and luxury items for an imaginary marooning on a remote island—interviewer Kirsty Young pressed the former Fleet Street editor about tabloid tactics that were being widely condemned at the time in Parliament and elsewhere.

“And what about this nice middle-class boy who would have to be dealing with, I mean, essentially people who rake through people’s bins for a living?” Young asked Morgan. “People who tap people’s phones, people who take secret photographs...who do all that very nasty down-in-the-gutter stuff—how did you feel about that?”

Morgan’s response: “Well, to be honest, let’s put that into perspective as well. Not a lot of that went on…A lot of it was done by third parties, rather than the staff themselves.” But, in an admission Morgan more recently has steered clear of, he added: “That’s not to defend it, because obviously you were running the results of their work.”

Britain's phone-hacking scandal appeared to be spreading to newspaper titles beyond those owned by Rupert Murdoch, with fresh claims dragging the Mirror group into the mire of allegations of eavesdropping on celebrities.

In a dramatic turn to the scandal, former journalists at the ‘Mirror’ group said they witnessed phone hacking at their newspapers and that the practice was ‘endemic’. So far, the allegations had clouded newspapers of the News International group, the largely affected being the now closed ‘News of the World’.

In fresh developments, James Hipwell, a former journalist of the ‘Daily Mirror’ told ‘The Independent’ that he would be willing to testify in front of a public inquiry into the episode headed by Justice Brian Leveson.

The BBC also quoted a former employee of the ‘Sunday Mirror’ as claiming that he witnessed routine phone hacking in the newsroom, with celebrities including actress Liz Hurley and footballer Rio Ferdinand targeted.

The two newspapers were among the main competitors of News International's tabloids. However, ‘Trinity Mirror’ defended itself against the allegations and said its journalists work within the criminal law and Press Complaints Commission code of conduct. Hipwell, 45, also alleged that hacking took place on other newspapers within the ‘Trinity Mirror’ group, including ‘The People’, where Sean Hoare, the whistleblower who died recently, was working before moving to the ‘News of the World’.

London:  A group of computer hackers claims to have breached NATO security and accessed hordes of restricted material.

The group called Anonymous says it would be "irresponsible" to publish most of the material it stole from NATO but that it is sitting on about one gigabyte of data.

Anonymous posted a PDF file on Thursday on its Twitter page showing what appeared to be a document headed "NATO Restricted."

In his first significant public comments on the tabloid newspaper scandal that has engulfed his media empire, News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch vigorously defended the company's handling of the crisis but said it would establish an independent committee to "investigate every charge of improper conduct."

In an interview, Mr. Murdoch said News Corp. has handled the crisis "extremely well in every way possible," making just "minor mistakes."

News Corp. owns The Wall Street Journal.

A US man who hacked into his neighbors' Wi-Fi network and tried to frame them with child pornography and threatening emails to the US vice president has been sentenced to 18 years in jail.

US District Judge Donovan Frank sentenced Barry Ardolf, 46, on Tuesday after listening to the tearful testimony of Bethany Kostolnik, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

"My husband and I had to explain to our young, innocent children way too early that there are evil people in the world - and to never go in Barry Ardolf's yard," she said, according to the newspaper.

"Until Ardolf was incarcerated, not a day went by that I didn't think about another attack," her husband Matt Kostolnik said.

"Barry Ardolf has demonstrated by his conduct that he is a dangerous man," US attorneys prosecuting the case said in court documents.

The revelations about phone hacking and police payoffs might require Rupert Murdoch himself to appear before a judicial committee, says Geoffrey Robertson. And this would be a good thing, not only for the law, but also for News Corp.’s reputation.

“Be ye ever so high, the law is above you” is the great principle that embodies the rule of law. Should it now require Rupert Murdoch’s detention in custody for long enough to assist police with their inquiries? Anyone whose employees engage in bribery, corruption, or other crimes for his benefit should always be called upon to explain whether he knew or approved of their actions, if only to exculpate himself from secondary liability—e.g., for conspiracy or incitement or aiding and abetting a criminal offense. Murdoch has flown to London to help News Corp. and is therefore available to help “Operation Weeting”—the somewhat puerile name given by Scotland Yard to its inquiry into the hacking scandal. Will his attendance at Wapping police station be required?

This question is of some importance given the prime minister’s refusal to allow a judicial investigation to begin until police inquiries are finished and any trials have run their course. This process will take at least three years and presupposes that police officers have the intellectual ability to get at the truth, through any miasma set up by their corrupt colleagues and by journalists and newspaper executives who are under suspicion. But police inquiries in Britain rarely get to the truth: suspects and potential witnesses have a right not to answer police questions, and no duty to tell the truth if they do.

The incompetence of Scotland Yard in political cases was on display to all yesterday, when its senior officers attended a parliamentary committee and apologized for their behavior back in 2006, when they failed to look at 11,000 pages of evidence because News Corp. told them they would find nothing. What they would have found were the names of 4,000 victims of the ruthless News of the World hacker, Glenn Mulcaire.

London:  Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron has called for a further inquiry into the phone hacking scandal engulfing the News of the World tabloid.

Cameron says an independent inquiry needs to look at why an original police investigation did not get to bottom of what happened when the scandal first emerged several years ago.

The demand came as British police revealed they would investigate allegations that officers received payments from the tabloid newspaper, thanks to new documents given police by the tabloid's parent company, News International.

Hackers took over a politics Twitter feed belonging to US broadcaster Fox News announcing that President Barack Obama had been shot dead on America's national day.

The @foxnewspolitics feed stated: "@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead."

Just an hour before the message, there was a post, "Just regained full access to our Twitter and email. Happy 4th".

July 4 is America's national day. Even nearly three hours after the last twitter update on the account wishing luck to the 'new' President John Biden, none of the messages have been removed.

Reporting that hackers have taken over a Twitter account belonging to Fox News, BBC said a group or individual, calling themselves 'The Script Kiddies' appeared to claim responsibility.

A 19-year-old British man suspected of masterminding computer hacking attacks on the CIA, the US Senate and Sony from his bedroom, has been arrested.

Ryan Cleary was arrested at his family’s home in Essex after a joint inquiry conducted by Scotland Yard and the FBI, the Daily Mail reports.

He was held hours after the UK’s serious crime unit came under online siege from the hacking group known as LulzSec.

Ryan, described as a loner who ‘lives his life online’, faces the prospect of extradition to the US where he could face 60 years behind bars for allegedly hacking into the CIA and Senate websites.

Ryan’s mother said her son suffers from agoraphobia and attention deficit disorder and had not left his home for four years.
