JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday ended his two-day-old indefinite fast to demand a CBI probe into ruling BJP’s allegation that he and his family had amassed illegal wealth of Rs 1,500 crore, saying he was doing so bowing to the directives of his party and its workers.

Mr. Kumaraswamy was offered a glass of fruit juice by Jnanapeetha Awardee U.R. Ananthamurthy at Freedom Park after he urged him to withdrew the fast, which the JDS leader accepted and ended his stir.

“Personally I am in favour of continuing with the fast. But my party leaders, partymen and leading personalities have been mounting pressure on me to give up the fast. I am obliging all of them and respecting their sentiments.”

Mr. Kumaraswamy criticised the ‘callous manner’ in which allegations were hurled against family members of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, including himself, by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and BJP.

Earlier, a three-member ministers team comprising Home Minister R Ashoka, Labour Minister B N Bacchegowda and Housing Minister V Somanna called on Mr. Kumaraswamy and handed over a letter to him from Mr. Yeddyurappa, requesting him to call off the fast.

Mr. Yeddyurappa invited Mr. Kumarawamy for parleys on the issues raised by him and ruled out seeking a CBI probe.

A team of doctors from Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, who conducted a medical check up on Mr. Mr. Kumaraswamy cautioned him against continuing the fast as his blood pressure and sugar levels fluctuated.

• Yoga guru Ramdev today ended his nine-day-old fast in the presence of some spiritual leaders.
  Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar, who met the 46-year-old yoga exponent for the third day at a Dehradun hospital, said, "Ramdev has broken his fast by taking juice.
  He ended the fast in the presence of various religious and spiritual leaders". Ramdev was on a fast for the past nine days to protest against corruption and black money issues.

A doctor checks the weight of yoga guru Baba Ramdev on the fourth day of his indefinite strike at Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar on Tuesday.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who continued his fast against corruption for the sixth day on Thursday, has agreed to take lemon juice and honey in the evening, but may be force-fed glucose, a senior district official said here.

“He is not going to break his fast. I have asked him to take lemon juice and honey and he has complied. He will take it in the evening,” R. Meenakshi Sundaram, District Magistrate of Haridwar, told IANS over phone.

“His condition has worsened. So, we requested him,” he added.

My Take:  

With lemon and honey, his fast is broken.

If I starve for one day, I would pass out and if for two days, I would die;  having said that I do not subscribe to anybody dieing due to fasting.

While on that subject, it is interesting to note that apart from Mahatmaji who fasted many times, in Indian History, there are two true Satyagrahis who in fact fasted-unto-death:

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potti_Sreeramulu Potti Sreeramulu fasted in the heart of Madras (Chennai) city for over 82 days for an Andhra state with Madras as the capital – and died on 15 December (i.e. early 16 December 1952).  

The reasons as to why the Rajaji government, Union government led by Nehru or police did not intervene to force feed or shift him to a hospital remain unclear. It is interesting to note that only one person before him in modern Indian history Jatin Das actually fasted to death; all the others either gave up or were arrested and force fed or hospitalised.

Jatindra Nath Das (also known as Jatin Das) (27 October 1904 – 13 September 1929) was an Indian freedom fighter and revolutionary. The death of Jatin Das in Lahore jail after 63 days of hunger strike shocked the whole of India. Jatin Das is the only person to fast to death before independence, Potti Sreeramulu fasted to death for a separate Andhra after independence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatin_Das

• The verdict in the trial of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, co-accused in the Mumbai terror attacks with David Coleman Headley, is likely to come in earlier than expected as the Chicago businessman is unlikely to testify at his own trial.
  Rana's Attorney Patrick Blegen said Tahawwur Rana's defence team was still making a final decision, but that it was unlikely Rana would take the stand. The case proceeded quickly after Headley, a Pakistani-American, wrapped up his testimony after five days of questioning by Prosecution and Defence lawyers in the trial of his childhood friend and another 26/11 co-accused Rana in a Chicago court.
  Prosecutors called seven witnesses today, including five FBI agents who verified email and phone communication between Rana, Headley, and "Major Iqbal," believed to be an ISI officer. Rana was communicating through e-mails with Major Iqbal of ISI (low level officer), it was noted in court. An email sent from a Chaudhery Khan, another name for Major Iqbal from chaudherykhan@yahoo.com in which he gave his mobile number for future contacts was shown in court today by prosecutor Sarah Streicker.
  But, with the plea-bargain of Headley with the US Authorities, will this psychopath ever be punished for his crimes?

Bahrain has lifted the state of emergency imposed in March to quell pro-democracy demonstrations.

Activists have called for protests to restart, but security measures remain in place to stop large gatherings.

More than 20 people were killed during the government's campaign to stifle the demonstrations.

Human rights groups are demanding an end to the what they call the arbitrary detention and torture of protesters, as well as secret military tribunals.

Bahrain's ruler, King Hamad al-Khalifa has announced that Dialogue, on reforms, would start next month but, why in the meanwhile so many killings?

Given the fact that security forces are alleged to have raped, tortured and killed people, it is very difficult to believe that al-Khalifa has any serious intentions of conceding the demand of democracy.

Mumbai, May 28 (IBNS): Social activist Medha Patkar ended her hunger strike protesting the eviction of slum-dwellers from Golibar in Mumbai's suburban Khar locality on Saturday after the Maharshtra government agreed to her demands.

The 56-year-old activist broke her strike on the ninth day after the state government issued a notification Saturday afternoon that met her demands, Patkar's associate Madhuresh Kumar, a member of National Alliance of Peoples' Movement (NAPM) said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan called had called her late Thursday night to try and break a deal, but as her fast entered the eighth day on Friday, Patkar stood firm on her demand for the removal of Clause 3K of the Maharashtra Slum Areas Act.

She had been on strike since May 20 in the in Golibar slum area of Mumbai, where she alleged that 140 acres of land was handed to a private builder based on forged consent letters from the slum dwellers.
