A bomb exploded in a Pakistani mosque during the main Friday prayers, killing at least 30 people and wounding more than 70 others in the tribal district of Khyber, an official said.
It was the deadliest attack for two months in the nuclear-armed Muslim country awash with violence blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked networks where US special forces killed Osama bin Laden on May 2.
The bomb exploded as hundreds of people had packed into the mosque in the town of Jamrud, 25 kilometres (16 miles) from Peshawar, the main city in the northwest where most of the violence in Pakistan is concentrated.
"At least 24 people have been killed and more than 70 were injured. The bomb blast took place inside the mosque," Mutahar Zeb, the top administrative official of the semi-autonomous district, told AFP.
"There are body parts, there is mutilated flesh so we can't say whether it was a planted bomb or a suicide attack," he added.
Sayed Ahmed Jan, a senior administrative official, initially said seven people died, but with more than 50 people wounded he warned there were fears that the death toll could rise.
Like the rest of the Muslim world, Pakistan is observing the holy month of Ramadan in which faithful fast from dawn to dusk.

Militants staged twin bomb and shooting attacks against Norway's government on Friday, with as a deadly explosion ripping through ministry buildings and a gunman opening fire at a meeting of the ruling party - killing at least 17 people.
But an eyewitness, Andre Scheie, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that he saw 20 to 25 bodies at the youth camp where a gunman dressed in a police uniform opened fire.
Scheie said he saw bodies on the shore of the Utoya Island where the youth wing of the Labor Party was holding a summer camp for hundreds of youths. He added: "There are very many dead by the shore ... there are about 20-25 dead." He also said he saw dead people in the water.
Meanwhile, police arrested a Norwegian man and the arrested has links to right-wing extremism, independent Norwegian television TV2 reported on Saturday, without disclosing its sources.
Police were searching a flat in west Oslo where the man lived, TV2 said.

At least 80 people were killed in a shooting at a youth camp on the Norwegian island of Utoya the second of two attacks blamed on a Norwegian suspect authorities have not identified, police said.

Police confirmed that they had arrested a Norwegian man for the attack on a summer youth camp, and that they believed the same man was responsible for the bombing in central Oslo several hours earlier that claimed at least seven lives.

The 80 dead at the camp was a dramatic increase over an earlier police report that at least 10 had died at the youth camp. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters many more victims were discovered between the two reports, according to The Associated Press.

With the arrest of a lone Norwegian in the twin bomb and shooting attacks today, officials have all but ruled out any connection to international terrorism.

"We have one person in custody and he will be charged in connection with what has happened," said Justice Minister Knut Storberget during a Friday evening press conference. "We know that he is Norwegian. That is what we know. I don't think it's right from my position to go into details about him."
