Kolkata: A consensus to rename West Bengal as "Paschim Banga" was on Friday reached at an all-party meeting to change the nomenclature of the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggested the new name and unanimity was reached on it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee said after the meeting in the Assembly.
"It has been unanimously decided that state's new name will be Paschim Banga from now in all languages," he said.

"We wanted a change in the name of the state to get the administrative advantage," he said.

The Chief Minister over the meeting atteneded by Trinamool Congress, besides ally Congress and SUCI(C), Left Front constituents CPI-M, CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc as also GJM, among other parties.

Mamata had earlier empowered Chatterjee and Leader of the Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra to study the new name for the state.
Chatterjee said the letter 'W' in West Bengal came low down alphabetically which resulted in disadvantage for the state.

"Paschimbanga as a new name also mirrors history," he said, adding a resolution would be moved in the Assembly for adoption which would be then referred to the Centre.

Forward Bloc sources said the choice was made from among the suggestions of 'Paschim Banga', 'Bangla' and 'Bangabhumi'.

CPI-M's Mishra, who flanked Chatterjee at the press meet, said, "Whatever be the opinions in the past, unanimity was reached on the issue at the all-party meeting."

Once the bill in this regard is passed by two-thirds majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and ratified by the President, the state would get the new name.

With joint-security operations virtually at a standstill in West Bengal, Maoists have started regrouping and recruiting cadres in the eastern state, intelligence inputs point.
The inputs received by the Home Ministry from three West Bengal districts - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia - have suggested that the Naxals have been able to lure a sizable number of youths and recruit them for armed training.
The recruitment drive and activities of the Maoists have intensified after Mamata Banerjee took charge as the chief minister since her government favoured talks with the ultras and virtually suspended all operations against them.

01) Naxalism is said to have been raising its head because of the growing economic disparity between the haves and have nots and they fight for the underdog;

02) However, Naxals, have proved their ruthlessness and greed for money and power by killing innocent tribals and villagers, for who they claim to be fighting;

03) Political parties, to gain, votes, on and off, have abandoned the Counter-Naxal initiatives of the Security Forces, which has always resulted in regrouping and restrengthening activity;

04) Even, in 2009 when the state of Andhra Pradesh has lifted curbs on them to facilitate a government-naxals negotiations, all they have done was regrouping and restrengthening of their cadres and sabotage the peace talks to try to strike back with an greater force, which, however, was quashed by the police.

05) Mamatadi too has done the same thing by discouraging any counter-naxalism and now the state has to face the Naxal violence.

06) Anyway, the containment of naxalism is the state subject and the centre would always help them with additional forces, provided she has any intentions of moving towards that direction!

July 10, 2011 / DC.

Kerala Finance Minister K M Mani - DC
Kerala Finance Minister K M Mani - DC.

The Kerala Finance Minister, Mr K.M. Mani, says the only other state that offers some comfort for Kerala on its weak financials is West Bengal, which had slipped several notches under the Left rule.
Blaming the LDF for its “poor financial management” in the last five years, Mr Mani pointed out that the per capita revenue deficit in Kerala was Rs 873 as against Rs 152.85 for Tamil Nadu, Rs 286.5 AP and Rs 195.7 for Karnataka.
West Bengal, with Rs 2,023 per capita revenue deficit, was way behind Kerala.
Mr Mani feared that Kerala was already in a debt trap. As per the budget presented by the former Finance Minister, Dr Thomas Isaac, Kerala had borrowed Rs 19, 633 crore, out of which Rs 15,399 crore was used for debt servicing in the last fiscal. This was when 21 States had recorded revenue surpluses, overcoming the recessionary phase.
Referring to Dr Isaac’s claim that there had been no treasury overdraft during the LDF term and that the treasury liquidity was Rs 1,963 crore when he stepped down on May 18, Mr Mani said this was not factual because the immediate disbursals under various heads came up to Rs 2,154 crore, including the funds spent for the anti-recession package.

Mamata withdraws cess on LPG for WB consumers

Kolkata: To provide relief to the common people reeling under hiked fuel price, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday announced her government's decision to withdraw cess on LPG and thus save Rs 16 per cylinder for the consumers with immediate effect.
"I consulted my Finance minister Amit MItra after midnight decision of the UPA government to hike prices of diesel, LPG and Kerosene oil and decided to withdraw cess collected by the state government on each LPG cylinder to give relief to common people", the chief minister told reporters.
She said that the state government would not collect cess of Rs 16 per LPG cylinder and this would effectively put the burden of hike at Rs 34 and not Rs 50 on consumers in the state.
Very Good Gesture, Mamatadi, hope all other states too follow suit!

Mamata Benerjee’s List of Tasks!

Brickbats, Bouquets & Backfeeds are welcome on prmadhura@yahoo.com

Mr. Aditya Nigam gives us a deep insight on ‘The Decline and fall of the Left’, in Today’s “Deccan Chronicle”.

01) Pacifying the clashing cadres of CPM & TMC that has already cost the lives of 150 people of both camps; A bit tough but achievable.

02) Containing the Naxal menace, toward who she has been soft as an opposition leader, but now she as the ruling person she needs to take a firm stand; Needs to take rough stand.

03) Wooing back industry, that she drove away, if she truly bring in economic development to her state; Requires truly farmer as well as industry friendly policies.

04) Melting down the 2,00,000 Lakhs crore debt of the state; An uphill task for a state which coffers are empty.

05) Containing the Militant Trade Unionism; Tough but not impossible, if she acts impartial.

06) Lastly but most importantly, depoliticizing the Bureaucracy as well as the Police. A very long process as nearly two generations of Bureaucracy as well as the Police have been indoctrinated by the communist brain-washing.
