The White House says President Barack Obama told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that the U.S. is prepared to support Russian-led negotiations in Libya.

However, Mr. Obama told the Russian President that the U.S. would only back the negotiations if they lead to a democratic transition and long-time Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi steps aside.

Mr. Medvedev has joined the West in urging Mr. Qadhafi to step down, and envoys from the Kremlin have traveler to Libya to meet with representatives of Mr. Qadhafi’s government.

Will Russia be able to convince Muammar Gadaffi to step down, voluntarily, handing over the power to the people of Libya?

The US on Thursday vowed to hunt down Ayman al-Zawahiri, the new Al Qaeda leader, the same way as that of his predecessor Osama bin Laden, who was killed in an American raid in Abbottabad in Pakistan.

"He (Zawahiri) and his organisation still threaten us. As we did both seek to capture and kill and succeed in killing bin Laden, we certainly do or will do the same thing with Zawahiri," Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.

Mullen said he was not surprised by the news reports that Zawahiri has succeeded Osama bin Laden.

Requires another Abbottabad style commando operation!

There is no evidence so far that anybody in a senior position in Pakistan Army or ISI had any knowledge about the presence of Osama bin Laden at a safe house in an Islamabad suburb, a top Pentagon official has said.

"I'm privy now to an awful lot of what we've seen as a result of what he had in his, where he was living, and I just haven't seen anything yet that would confirm that anybody in a senior position had any idea he was there," Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Charlie Rose show in an interview yesterday.

"...I just haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe, any evidence that the ISI knew about it, that the Pak military knew about it," he said. The top Pentagon official said that he has seen evidence that bin Laden lived at the Abbottabad compound for five years. He said the US raid on bin Laden's safe house was the culmination of the focus that America had put on finding and capturing or killing the top al-Qaeda leadership "When we went in, certainly he's been the number one target for us for a long time, but when we went in, the status of al-Qaeda has been significantly damaged over the course of the last two or three years," he said.

WIKILEAKS - US troops embedded with Pak forces, Musharaff's Legacy: Double Speak!

Contrary to Pakistani military's persistent assertion that it will not allow foreign troops to operate within the country, US special forces were embedded with Pakistani troops for intelligence gathering and were also deployed on joint operations in their territory, according to secret US diplomatic cables.

The cables released by WikiLeaks said that US special operations forces were embedded with Pakistani troops for intelligence gathering by the summer of 2009 and deployed with them on joint operations in Pakistani territory by September the same year.

The issue has gained heightened sensitivity in the wake of the US raid against Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
