India has become one of the first nations to accord diplomatic recognition to South Sudan, the world’s youngest country which split away from Khartoum-ruled north after decades of brutal war that claimed nearly two million lives.

The recognition was accorded through a letter by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to South Sudan’s new President General Salva Kiir Mayardit, shortly after he assumed power at the Independence Day function here on Saturday.

“On this historic occasion, the government of India extends formal recognition to the independent state of South Sudan,” the Prime Minister’s letter said.

The letter was handed over to General Mayardit by India’s ambassador to Sudan A.K. Pandey, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Sanjay Singh told reporters.

Officials accompanying Vice President Hamid Ansari, who attended South Sudan’s Independence Day function, said that India would soon be appointing its Ambassador in Juba. At present, India has a Consul General here.

A colourful ceremony, which marked the historic occasion -- the birth of a new nation, was attended among others by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and UN chief Ban Ki-moon.

South Sudan would hence be the 193rd country to be recognised by the UN and the 54th member state from Africa.

South Sudanese citizens, international dignitaries and the world’s newest president convened in the new country capital of Juba on Saturday to celebrate the birth of a nation.

South Sudan became the world’s newest country Saturday with a raucous street party at midnight.

Later, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and dozens of other world leaders will watch under a blazing sun as South Sudan President Salva Kiir hosts a noon-hour ceremony.

“Wow, this is a great day for me because it’s a day that reflects the suffering that all southerners have had for almost 50 years,” said David Aleu, a 24-year-old medical student.

The black African tribes of South Sudan and the mainly Arab north battled two civil wars over more than five decades, and some 2 million died in the latest war, from 1983-2005. It culminated in a 2005 peace deal that led to Saturday’s independence declaration.

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir, the former leader of the south, is also to attend Saturday’s ceremony.

Thousands of South Sudanese poured into the ceremonial arena when gates opened. Traditional dancers drummed in the streets as residents waved tiny flags. Activists from the western Sudan region of Darfur, which has suffered heavy violence the past decades, held up a sign that said “Bashir is wanted dead or alive.” Mr. Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur.

KAMPALA (Reuters) - When South Sudanese president Salva Kiir joins Africa's not so exclusive rebels-turned-leaders club Saturday, he will find his new state dependent on similar men for trade, investment -- and survival.

Oil-producing South Sudan is due to declare independence on July 9 -- a split approved in a referendum promised in a 2005 north-south peace deal to end two decades of conflict.

For former rebels in neighbouring countries such as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the equation is simple.

A prosperous and peaceful South Sudan will mean billions of dollars in trade and investment for those two countries and also for east Africa's Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

A return to war, or significant violence, with the north, will be a disaster for the revenues of every country in the region and could mean an influx of refugees.
