BANGALORE: In fresh trouble for B S Yeddyurappa, Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj today gave sanction to Lokayukta police to initiate criminal proceedings against him over the report on illegal mining.

Bhardwaj accepted the findings and recommendation of the Lokayukta in Chapter 22 of the report for initiating criminal proceedings against Yeddyurappa, a Raj Bhavan communique said.

The Governor's sanction came a week after the Lokayukta sent a copy of the report to Bhardwaj.

It said the Governor, the competent authority under the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, took the decision after having carefully examined the report, along with relevant annexures, with reference to provisions of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, 1994 and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

BEIRUT—Syria's foreign minister said the country wouldn't bow to external pressure to accelerate reforms and reinforced the regime's offer of a "national dialogue" as the only way out of the conflict between President Bashar al-Assad's regime and protesters.
Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, in a televised news conference in Damascus on Wednesday, warned European officials "to stop meddling in Syria's affairs" and called European Union sanctions against Syrians "equal to war."
Mr. Moallem also said he hoped neighboring Turkey would "revise its stance." Turkey has raised pressure on Syria to stop its violent crackdown on antigovernment demonstrations.
The European Union is expected to put new sanctions into effect on Friday that will include seven individuals, including three Iranians, and four entities, a diplomat said. The names of the new sanctions targets will be released on Friday.
The EU has already imposed restrictive measures on Mr. Assad and 22 others connected to his regime, after its violent crackdown on protesters.

Sri Lankan Genocide: TN demands economic sanctions against Sri Lanka on Tamil issue!

FE BUREAU / Posted: Thursday, Jun 09, 2011 at 0308 hrs IST.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution on Wednesday, asking the central government to impose economic sanctions against the neighbouring Sri Lanka over the issues related to Tamils in the island nation.

The resolution, which was moved by chief minister J Jayalalithaa, also asked the Union government to press the United Nations (UN) to declare as ‘war criminals’ those who had committed crimes during the conflict with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.

After moving the resolution in the Assembly, Jayalalithaa said only economic sanctions would rein in the island country. She added Sri Lanka “did not heed the global opinion when it came to the Tamils issue”.
“For the return of Tamils lodged in camps to their native places and to ensure equal rights for dignified living on par with the (majority) Sinhala, India with other countries should jointly impose economic sanctions on Sri Lankan government,” ...

But the question is will the present UPA Government would act on this Resolution?

Syrian Resistance: India weighs options as West tries to corner Syria!

In principle, India would not support raising of the matter at UNSC: Special Envoy
Syria is already under sanctions by some Western countries

NEW DELHI: India is weighing its options as the West tries to report Syria to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a move that could upset the delicate balance in West Asia amid unrest in many countries in the region.

The U.S.-piloted proposal to refer Syria to the UNSC may come up before the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the coming week. Syria, an anathema to some western countries, is already under sanctions by some of them after the U.S. failed to convince the UNSC to go for global sanctions for alleged human rights abuses during public protests.

The latest attempt to corner Syria has been triggered by an IAEA report that felt that a building bombed by Israeli jets in 2007 should have been declared by Damascus because “it was very likely a nuclear reactor.''

India need not always follow what the West does, but given the fact that Bashar Al-Assad's regime is indulging in genocide of its own people to suppress the popular demand for democracy, India should support the future democratic set-up of Syria rather than continuing with its loyalties to Assad.
