New Delhi:  Government sources have told NDTV that Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has ordered a review of the policy of sending domestic help abroad. This comes after the allegations of mistreatment of domestic help, faced by the Indian Consul General in New York Prabhu Dayal.

The source has revealed that the government will look at the policies other countries have in this regard.

This comes after Indian government decided to back Mr Dayal saying the allegations levelled against him appeared to be "motivated and baseless" and voiced concern over Indian diplomats being targeted in the US.

"We are disappointed and surprised at the allegations against Consul General (CG) of India in New York, Mr Prabhu Dayal, by his former employee, which appear to be motivated and baseless," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said in a statement.

One is very disappointed at the statement the Ministry of External Affairs defending Prabhu Dayal, as if they were on the spot, all the while!

Prabhu Dayal still has to answer why he retained Santosh Bhardwaj's passport, illegally, for so long, which is a criminal offence both in India and US!!

He also needs to explain how much he has charged from the Government Exchequer, for keeping a domestic maid, and how much he has actually paid to her!!!

New York: Santosh Bhardwaj, the maid who has sued a top Indian diplomat in New York for alleged forced labour, was scared to take legal action against him given his high profile stature, her lawyer said on Tuesday.

"She has been very afraid to do anything given the stature of the defendant in this case... She is doing well and now feels strong enough to bring the suit," Holly Pfitsch, her lawyer, told PTI.

Pfitsch, however, noted that Bhardwaj was still too scared to talk to the press. Prabhu Dayal, the Indian Consul General in New York, has dismissed the charges levied against him as 'complete nonsense' and 'malicious lies'.

Currently, it seems to be Bhardwaj's word against his. Pfitsch, a lawyer with the Legal Aid Society, acknowledged that in many such cases there is a lot of "he said she said".

"It is very common in domestic worker cases," she said, adding that it is usual for both sides to call several witnesses.

Anyway, Prabhu Dayal needs to do a lot of explanations why he was, illegally, holding her passport, all these years;

He is also not denying paying her below the legal wages;

I am sure, he might have collected heavy amounts from the Government of India on account of his hiring servants!

Prabhu Dayal, the Indian Consul General in New York, has been slapped with a forced-labour suit by a former housekeeper who says she was treated like a slave, a charge rejected by Dayal as "complete nonsense".

The housekeeper accused him  of treating a former domestic help as a slave and making sexual advances.

Santosh Bhardwaj, Dayal's former maid, has filed a forced labour-suit against him for making her work for long hours everyday at USD 300 a month, confiscating her passport and letting her sleep in a storage closet. She has also alleged him of making sexual advances.

"I filed the complaint because I want to be paid for all the labour I provided and for all the injustice I suffered - and I want my passport returned," Bhardwaj (45), the mother of four children, said.
