Mumbai: The CBI on Monday arrested Income Tax Commissioner Daya Shankar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh from a private company for passing a favourable order in an appeal matter.

"Shankar, Commissioner IT (Appeals), was arrested this morning from his office in Bandra for demanding and accepting bribe for settling and issuing a favourable order in an appeal matter pending before him," CBI Joint Director (Western Region) Rishiraj Singh told reporters.

A firm engaged in copper wire manufacture had filed its return for assessment year 2008-09 which was taken up for scrutiny by the jurisdictional IT officer. After scrutiny, the IT officer had passed an order for additional tax liabilities.

Aggrieved by this, the company approached Shankar with an appeal challenging the order.

"Shankar demanded bribe from the company for issuing a favourable assessment order. He also told them that if they do no pay the money then he would confirm the order passed earlier," Singh said.

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi's central office in his Amethi constituency was among the premises targeted on Tuesday by Anna Hazare's supporters on the second day of protests outside homes of elected representatives in several parts of the country in response to the Gandhian's call.

As Anna's fast in Ramlila Maidan in Delhi entered the eighth day, the protests in the forms of fasts, sit-ins and demonstrations continued.

The support for Anna's hunger strike scaled new heights when a 60-year-old man Rajendran launched a fast in Veloor village in Kottayam in Kerala sitting atop a coconut tree during daytime.

The Tamil film industry also backed Anna's campaign for a strong Lokpal bill with over 200 of its members observing a fast in Chennai. The protesters included Directors Cheran and Chitra Lakshmanan, actress Rohini and several producers and backstage artistes.

Tamil superstar Rajinikanth lent his weight to Anna's 'peaceful' anti-graft movement, calling it a 'bloodless revolution'. He extended his 'whole-hearted support' to the campaign and said corruption was a dreaded disease that needed to be weeded out.

From Hussein Saddique, CNN, / August 9, 2011 - Updated 0045 GMT (0845 HKT).

(CNN) -- Former New York police officer Kenneth Moreno was sentenced Monday to one year in prison for three counts of official misconduct in a case of alleged rape involving himself and another New York police officer.

A jury acquitted Moreno and former partner Franklin Mata of felony rape and burglary in May, but found them guilty of official misconduct, a misdemeanor. Moreno and Mata were on duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Moreno and Mata were accused of returning to the apartment of a 27-year-old woman whom they had helped earlier in the evening and raping her in December 2008.

The case set off a public storm, and the men were later fired from the New York Police Department. On Monday a group of female protesters gathered in front of the courthouse holding signs that read, "NYPD: Protect women," and, "Take rape seriously."

Moreno and Mata admitted they broke police guidelines by hiding from their superiors the fact that they went back to the woman's apartment. Moreno admitted to making a fake 911 emergency call so that police dispatchers would send the officers back to the woman's apartment, according to Judge Gregory Carro at New York County Supreme Court.

Richie rich: Punjab's millionaire woman cop in CBI net!

August 3, 2011 / IANS, CHANDIGARH / DC.

A palatial bungalow, lakhs in cash and jewellery, two luxury cars and a well-stocked bar with the best of international liquor brands - CBI sleuths stumbled upon all this and more during a recent raid on woman Punjab police officer Raka Ghira.
And everyone - from her colleagues to neighbours and even the investigators themselves - were a little more than just curious.
Having laid a trap on July 24 while she was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.100,000 from controversial builder K.K. Malhotra to 'clear' his file, the Central Bureau of Investigation closed in on the riches of the well-heeled deputy superintendent of police (DSP).
Malhotra is facing charges of fraud and forgery.
A raid at her bungalow in an upscale locality in Chandigarh's Sector 15 following the trap led to the recovery of over Rs.87 lakh in cash. CBI officials had to requisition electronic counting machines to count the notes.
"Why did she have so much cash at home? She is not a businesswoman," a CBI official said.
The agency also recovered documents of fixed deposits of nearly Rs.65 lakh, two imported weapons, nearly 1,200 live cartridges of various weapons, a luxury sedan and an expensive sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a well-stocked bar with over 50 bottles of best international liquor brands.
When her bank lockers were opened, gold jewellery worth nearly Rs.25 lakh was found along with cash and other valuables, official said.
Raka had joined the Punjab police as an inspector in 1999 on compassionate grounds after her husband, Ranbir Singh, a superintendent of police with the state police, died in a road accident.
"Her arrest and assets have left even senior police officers shocked. Women officers openly indulging in corrupt practices is not commonplace," a senior state police officer said, requesting anonymity.
In her nearly 11 years of service, Raka was mostly posted in Mohali, adjoining Chandigarh, owing to her connections with political leaders in the state. Even at the time of her arrest, she was holding the coveted post of DSP-city in Mohali.

PTI / The Hindu /  CHANDIGARH, June 26, 2011.

Rubbishing the Home Minister’s contention that reported bugging of Pranab Mukherjee’s office was a “non-event”, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said it was a very serious matter and demanded that the Finance Minister’s letter to the Prime Minister in this regard be made public.
Reacting sharply to Mr. Chidambaram saying he did not know about the bugging incident in the offices of the Finance Minister and his aides, BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad said, “while the Finance Minister takes services of CBDT and foreign investigators before writing to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister says he was not aware.”
Expressing surprise at Mr. Chidambaram’s statement that he was not aware of the Intelligence Bureau’s probe into Mr. Mukherjee’s complaint about “bugging” of his office in North Block despite the IB being under the Home Minister, Mr. Prasad said, ”...It is the biggest comedy of Independent India.”

Really grave issue that is being archived by the over-sensitive UPA Government but, Nation needs to know the truth!
