Government on Saturday officially announced the appointment of Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao as the next Ambassador to the United States, an assignment she will take up shortly.

Ms. Rao, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States of America and she is expected to take up her assignment shortly, official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi.

Her appointment to succeed Meera Shankar as the US Ambassador was cleared by the government last month.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan's attitude towards tackling terrorism has "altered", a "concrete" development that India should take note of, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has said. 

"I think the prism through which they see this issue has definitely been altered," Rao told Karan Thapar on "Devil's Advocate" programme on CNN-IBN. 

She was replying to a question on whether India saw a change in Pakistan's attitude towards terrorism during the recently concluded Foreign Secretary-level talks. 

Asked whether it was a positive development, Rao said it was an outcome that India must take note of. 

"I think when they speak of the fact that non-state elements in this relationship need to be tackled, that we must look at safe havens and sanctuaries, that we must look at fake currency, we must look at all the aspects that are concerned with the business of terror, I think that is a concrete development," she said. 

Its good if their attitude toward international terrorism is, indeed, changed; they have to demonstrate the same by locking up all terrorists operating out of Pakistan irrespective of their nationality as well as irrespective of whether their targets are Pakistan or India or any other Foreign Country!

External affairs minister S M Krishna’s visit to Myanmar – the first high level one since the new government took charge there -- has sent out a strong signal of India’s continuing commitment to Myanmar’s development. India has pledged US $10 million, which will go mainly towards building capacity in the agricultural sector. Besides, Delhi will build for Myanmar 10 disaster-proof rice silos. This is aimed at ensuring the food security of the people of Myanmar during natural disasters. It may be recalled that when Cyclone Nargis struck in 2008, hunger took a huge toll in the weeks and months following the cyclone. India’s help should prevent the recurrence of such suffering. India is also setting up an agricultural research centre in Ye Zin, which is located near the capital. On the economic front, India is pressing forward with its infrastructure projects in Myanmar. It signed an agreement for construction of an 80-km road linking Mizoram with Myanmar. The $60 million Rhi-Tiddim road project is expected to provide a boost to trade and the local economy in India’s northeast. India has an investment of $189 million in five projects. 

While some of these like the Kaladan multi-modal transport corridor project are making good progress, work on the Tamanthi hydel project has been unsatisfactory. Hopefully the roadblocks standing in the way of the timely completion of these projects were discussed during Krishna’s interaction with his Myanmarese counterparts.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is set to be the next Indian ambassador to The United States, official sources said here Wednesday.

Rao, 60, will be demitting office July 31 at the end of her two-year term. The government has decided to appoint Rao as the next envoy in Washington, the sources said.Rao will replace Meera Shankar, who has held the post since 2009. During Rao's term, the cabinet had amended its rules to ensure that any foreign secretary should serve for a period of two years. She had been given a seven-month extension in December. An announcement of her new posting is expected from the government soon, along with that of the next foreign secretary. A well deserved appointment, Congratulations, Madam!

India and Pakistan are set to review nuclear related confidence building measures (CBMs) at the Foreign Office and Foreign Secretary-level talks in Islamabad. And though both sides do not expect major results and disagree on the core issue at the talks – Kashmir or terrorism -- Government sources here reposed faith in a sustained dialogue process to narrow the trust deficit and build understanding for the eventual resolution of issues of discord between the two nations.

India wants the expectations from the Foreign Secretary talks to be "realistic’’ given the history and complexity of Indo-Pak ties. "Dialogue is a process. We should not expect a decision. We should go step by step," said the sources.

On the recent face off between warships of India and Pakistan clouding the talks, the sources cautioned against whipping up a frenzy though they claimed the Pakistani warship had displayed aggressive behaviour in the past as well.

Will something comes out of this one of the several many meetings?
